Technology Overview

Assistive Technology relates to the tools required to maintain, improve, or increase functional capabilities to bridge the gap between student’s performance and the demands of the curriculum.

AT can be “magical”…providing a sense of empowerment that results from being able to do something that the user had previously believed

was impossible.

What is Assistive Technology?

School-Based Teams and the AT Referral Process

1. What can the student do independently in each area of the curriculum?

1. What are the curriculum demands? (What is the student expected to do?)

1. Where is the GAP?

1. What supports are required in order to access the curriculum?

Page 10: Assistive Technology Lending Libraries

AT Referral Process

1. Consult with the appropriate site based/assigned related services staff regarding possible accommodations to meet the child’s needs, prior to making a referral for formal assessment

2. Assessment is completed by the site based/site-assigned related services staff at the student’s school of attendance

AT Services focus on: Identification of AT Devices to support student access AT equipment set-up, “trouble-shooting” as needed Device training for student, parent and school-site support team Periodic site visits to address additional training, equipment needs

AT is not a “time and frequency” service model Provides support required for student access to curriculum
