ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
North Eastern Victoria Regional (NEVR) Concert
Mullauna students continue to excel in music, and 26 of these students
have been busily rehearsing for the North Eastern Victorian Region
Youth Concert scheduled for Tuesday 30 May. The last newsletter
referred to our Year 7 debut concert where parents were able to view
their children’s progress after a few weeks of instrumental classes. It is
pleasing to see that many of the students who will shortly perform at
Hamer Hall were performing in the debut concert only a few years ago.
Exam Period
As we approach the exam period, teachers are
finalising work tasks with students and regularly
informing parents of overdue work and opportunities for students to
catch up. Please check Compass to ensure that your child is up to date.
All students have been provided with exam protocols and an exam
timetable. Where students are undertaking a VCE enhancement
subject and a clash occurs, the priority will be the VCE subject then
students will be able to sit the year 10 exam on the Friday.
The examination period will be conducted from Monday 5 June to
Friday 9 June.
The GAT will be held on Wednesday 14 June for all students who are
undertaking a Unit 3/4 subject. Students must arrive at school by
9.30am and be in full school uniform. Mobile phones and calculators
must be left at home or in lockers and only clear water bottles may be
brought within the examination centre. This is a report writing day,
therefore only students undertaking the GAT will be required at school.
Curriculum day
Feedback for students and parents helps to inform student progress
and future development. On Wednesday 24 May, teachers worked in
faculty groups to develop units of work and refine Learning Tasks with a
view to feeding back and feeding forward to students. This work will
ensure that during Semester 2, Learning Tasks are more informative,
2
Old Melbourne Gaol—Mock Trial Etihad Stadium Tour
structured and provide valuable information directed to the student with a view to developing strategies for
improved learning.
Attitudes to School Survey
The student Attitudes to School Survey provides valuable feedback to the school and informs how students perceive
their learning opportunities within and outside of the classroom as well as their interactions with peers and
teachers.
For 2017, students will undertake this survey on line. Shortly, all students will be provided with their individual login
information and will be provided with the opportunity to undertake the survey at school. It is important that that
students consider each question carefully and respond based on a on their general perception, not on a particular
class.

UPDATED WEIGHTS ROOM!
We have recently been fortunate enough to update our weights room in
the gym with some sparkling new equipment including spin bikes, a water
rower, treadmill, kettlebells and new mats! This also included a
re-configuration of the room to make it more accessible for our students
to move around and make best use of the space. This is a very exciting
addition to our College's strong Physical Education program!

MUSICAL NOTES
The Music Department is full swing into concert preparation for both the Hamer Hall Concert and our own Broadway
Concert. Some rehearsals have had to be moved to fit with our busy students and school and we thank parents for
helping us to make these changes work. All rehearsals are on Compass each week. Rehearsals will go back to normal
after the Broadway Concert.
We have 26 students involved in 6 different ensembles for the Hamer Hall Concert who have been rehearsing really
hard. Students have visited different schools in the region and have enjoyed meeting new musicians. This massive
performance is on Tuesday 30 May, and will be an amazing experience. We hope all our Mullauna performers enjoy
the experience.
A few reminders:
A few more Band Camp forms need to be returned.
$240 for Band Camp is due by Tuesday 6 June.
$280 for Instrumental lessons for the year should have been paid by now. Anyone who requires a payment plan
needs to call our Business Manager, Lynda Llewellyn, to set this up.
Our big night of the year is our theme concert. This year it is Mullauna on Broadway. Students are required to come up
with their own costume inspired by Broadway shows. Spotlight, $2 shops, Op shops and Ebay are great places to get
what you need at an affordable price. Costumes do take effort so we are advising everyone to start early.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
International Student Forum—16 May 2017
Sharing cultures, developing intercultural understanding, building capability.
This state-wide event was attended by our International students Mawi Zahau, Vikki Phyu, Mr Lee (Multi-Cultural Aid), and Julia May. The focus of the forum was ‘Building intercultural understanding and capability in schools’.
This year’s theme recognised the importance of valuing diversity and sharing cultural knowledge and experience within the school and the broader community. Our Mullauna College students participated in group sessions with other International students from Victoria, producing well thought out posters for
presentation to the assembly of students and teachers.

AN UPDATE ON DEBATING….
The third round of the DAV Interschool Debating Competition (Ringwood region) was held on the evening of
Monday 22 May. I am pleased to report that all three Mullauna teams earned the optimum four points.
The A Grade team, comprising Isabelle Ewert, Laura Harman and Kate Fincham, debated a secret topic. For such
debates, the topic is released one hour before the actual debate and the students have to plan quickly and work
effectively as a team. The team is also allowed two other members to assist with debate preparation; Elise Grant and
Merlyn Walker helped brainstorm the topic, ‘That environmental
groups should commit violent acts in pursuit of their aims’ and
the team argued the negative position. Isabelle Ewert was
awarded best speaker and the team had a convincing win over
Melba College.
In B Grade, our team debaters Lucy Juler, Gabby Wu and
Megan Edwards were set to compete against Aquinas College
arguing the negative position on the topic ‘That welfare
recipients must undergo drug testing.’ Although the team was
a little disappointed that their opposition forfeited, their
prepared case was still presented to the adjudicator enabling
them to receive invaluable feedback.
Our D Grade team had a bye this round, but will be back ready
to debate in Round 4 on Wednesday 7 June.
Thank you to Ms Davidson who supported the students and attended the evening debates with me.

YR 11 BIOLOGY
On May 16, the Year 11 Biology class went on an adventure to Melbourne Zoo. We were
lucky enough to have the opportunity of learning from the keepers themselves, which was quite an
enlightening and interesting experience. We learnt about conservation, cross fostering, how
temperature affects the sex of the Philippine Crocs and even about the artificial insemination
process of elephants. We travelled around the zoo, learning something new with every stop we
made at the enclosure of each animal.
Of course, while we enjoyed the lectures of the keepers, it was soon time for what we had all been
waiting for, walking around in small groups to receive the true zoo experience. Some of the
favourites of the class included the elephants, giraffes, seals, Orang-Utans (my personal favourite)
and of course, the meerkats, one of which we were lucky to see posted on watch at the top of a
tree branch.
Overall the excursion was highly successful, with the usual mix of fun, getting lost and selfies.

GERMAN
The Cuckoo Restaurant Excursion
On Thursday 27 July all Year 8 German students and several teachers will go on an excursion to the Cuckoo Restau-
rant in Olinda (The Dandenong Ranges). As part of cultural studies at school, our traditional visit to the Cuckoo Res-
taurant will give students a unique insight into a different culture. The Cuckoo has its roots in Bavaria, a free state in
southern Germany bordering Austria and the Czech Republic. Bavaria is known for its medieval castles, pretty towns,
magnificent palaces, baroque churches, lederhosen and sausages.
Food is a very important aspect of German culture. We will sample dishes which are part of Bavarian, German and
International cuisine, celebrate Christmas in July with Santa, dance to German tunes, have a go at yodelling and
schunkelling, and learn some interesting facts about the German culture, food and music.
In 2017, this intercultural fun day is complemented by a new Food Technology activity ‘Build Your Own Dessert’. Year
8 Food Tech enthusiasts will have the added fun of copying the Cuckoo Head Chef to make the best replica desserts
with prizes.
We are required to be at the Cuckoo Restaurant at 11:30 am to start the ‘Build Your Own Dessert’ activity before the
buffet and the Bavarian floor show. In the past, we used to arrive to the Cuckoo by 12:30 pm, using public transport
(train from Mitcham to Croydon/Upper Ferntree Gully, then bus 688). The current PTV timetable does not allow
synchronising the arrival of two groups; hence, some students may need to wait for up to 20 minutes outside. There
is a small playground at the bottom of the Cuckoo Restaurant garden, however if the weather is bad it may not be the
best option.
The price for the Cuckoo Restaurant visit is $35, which includes ‘Build Your Own Dessert’, full buffet, jugs of soft
drinks, live band and floor show. Students travelling to Olinda by public transport will need to bring a Myki. If you
would prefer your children to travel to the Cuckoo restaurant by coach, there is an option to hire a Jay Tee coach,
which will push the price up to $50-$55 dollars depending on coach size. Up to 10 students can travel to the Cuckoo
restaurant by school mini-bus (this will depend on availability of staff who are authorised to drive a mini-bus and
cannot be guaranteed at this stage). Students not going on the excursion will stay at school and attend lessons with
other year groups.
Before I put the Cuckoo Restaurant Event on Compass, could you please let me know which of the options below you would prefer? Please either complete the reply slip below and return it to your German teacher, send a message via Compass or email [email protected].

Host Families and
Exchange Students
A number of Exchange Students from Italy,
France Germany, Austria, Norway, Sweden and Finland are hoping to come here this July and August because they wish to study here for a term, a semester or even two (which would
mean they would be with the family who chooses them over Christmas and the summer
holidays) with a family that would like to experience the differences and similarities of having an extra boy or girl aged 15-17 stay with them while they enjoy the experience
and feel it is worthwhile.
I’m hoping that’s you and your family, so if you’d like to give it a try for a length of time, can afford an extra member of your family at
mealtimes and have a spare bed, share room or own, please call Klaus Schumann on 0472 771 785 or 03 9758 4279. (There is no payment in-
volved as these are exchange students).
Look forward to hearing from you.
