Purpose: This agreement sets out my expectations as Assistant Scoutmaster of you as Assistant Patrol Leader.

Your Commitment to the Scouts in Troop 51: You were appointed by the Patrol Leader to help him lead the Patrol for six months. Your primary responsibility is to be ready to perform the Patrol Leader’s job in his

absence. The Patrol Leader and members depend upon you. Therefore, you must lead by personal example which starts by being the most committed Scout in the Patrol. Your faithful attendance is essential. Assistant Patrol Leader is a major commitment of your time and best efforts to help lead and manage the Patrol. You must manage by planning, delegating, and supervising the Assistant Patrol Leader, the Instructor, and Scouts. You report to the Patrol Leader and me the Assistant Scout Master and work under our guidance and supervision as well as the Scoutmaster.

My Commitment to You: I and the Scoutmaster will provide you the tools you need to succeed and teach you how to use those tools effectively. We commit our time and best efforts to help you carry out your duties and responsibilities to the best of your abilities. I will be available for discussions or phone calls. I will back up your decisions, within reason. I will listen to your ideas. I will be fair. I will listen to all sides of any issue. I will set a good example (uniform, language, behavior, etc.). I will provide direction, coaching, and support. I will share a vision of success for the patrol and a plan to get there.

Scout’s AgreementI have read this agreement and the job description for Assistant Patrol Leader. I understand that if I do not faithfully attend and carry out my duties and responsibilities to the best of my ability I may not be credited leadership service for advancement.

Parent Support AgreementI have read this agreement and the job description, and I understand and agree to my son’s commitment to lead the Scouts in the Patrol as Assistant Patrol Leader. I realize that the Patrol cannot function well without his presence and the Scouts are entitled to his leadership. I promise to support and encourage him in attending Patrol training, meetings, and activities. I further understand that if he does not faithfully attend and carry out his duties and responsibilities to the best of his ability he may not be credited leadership service for advancement.

PREREQUISITES: You must be a Troop member in good standing. There are no rank, previous leadership position, or age requirements. You are appointed by the Patrol Leader.

BEST EFFORTS: You are expected to give this job your best efforts which means faithfully attend Troop meetings and activities, and carrying out your duties and responsibilities to the best of your abilities.

FAITHFUL ATTENDANCE: You must attend 80% of all Troop meetings, Patrol Leaders’ Council meetings, outings, and service projects to satisfy the requirement to faithfully attend. Set the example by being and active Scout. Be on-time for meetings and activities. If your attendance is low, or if you have two (2) unexcused absences in a row, you may be removed from office. You must call, text, or email the Patrol Leader or Scoutmaster in charge before you miss a Troop meeting, outing, or Patrol activity. You must make sure that another Patrol member is ready to assume your responsibilities in your absence.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE: Behavior: Set the example by living by the Scout Oath and Law in your everyday life. Show Scout Spirit

in everything you do and say. Uniform: Set the example by wearing your uniform correctly and completely. Wear all parts of the

Troop uniform with shirttail tucked in and all the required and earned badges in their correct locations.

SOME ASSISTANT PATROL LEADER LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES (SEE PATROL LEADERS HANDBOOK #32502): You help lead your Patrol to accomplish the BSA mission. You must attend Junior Leadership Training even if you have attended in the past. You get a copy of the Patrol Leader Handbook (No. 32502) from the Troop library and read it. You get and read copies of all Patrol Leadership Position Booklets. You participate in the semi-annual Program Planning Conference and all Patrol Leaders Council (PLC)

meetings. You work with other Troop leaders to make the troop run well. You keep Patrol members informed. You help collect attendance, headcounts, advancement, and other information and report to the PL or

Troop staff as appropriate. You make sure another Patrol member attends and is ready to perform your duties at any

meeting/function you will not be able to attend. You help prepare the Patrol to participate in all Patrol and Troop activities whether or not you attend. Know the abilities of each patrol member, and help the PL supervise their performance of their assigned

tasks. You work with the Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop Guides, and Patrol Instructor to ensure that all Scouts

receive the help they need for advancement. You stay abreast of the situation and go where needed to supervise, issue change orders as needed, and

accomplish the Patrol goals. You show and develop patrol spirit.
