MISSION STATEMENT:
The Butte County Library’s mission is to “provide all
individuals, regardless of age, ethnic background,
educational or economic level, with free access to ideas,
information, and technology”.
Butte County Butte County is situated on the east side of Northern California’s Sacramento Valley and covers 1,640
square miles between the Sacramento River to the west and the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east. This
“Land of Natural Wealth and Beauty” was founded on February 18, 1850, and is one of California’s original
counties. Butte County’s name is derived from the Marysville or Sutter Buttes mountain range, which was
within the boundaries of the county when it was created. Butte County is home to a growing population
of more than 224,000 people who live in the incorporated cities of Biggs, Chico, Gridley, Oroville (the
county seat), and the Town of Paradise. The county offers an ideal economic atmosphere, a highly
educated labor force, and a lower than average cost of living.
Butte County is home to the well-known California State University, Chico campus. With nearly 17,000
students, the University offers over 129 degrees. In addition, Butte County has a leading edge community
college, Butte College, which offers a variety of programs customized to meet the demands of individual
businesses.
Butte County is well known for its affordable, rural living within a leisurely day’s drive to the Bay Area,

Although Agriculture is a key industry of the County, employers in Butte County make a wide range of
products: electrical components, food products, photo processing, medical equipment, laser equipment,
reloading equipment, aircraft components, and software.
Music, dance, theater, art galleries, museums, and historical
homes are all part of the daily cultural life of Butte County
residents. Visits from touring artists complement a full
season of multidisciplinary, professional-caliber local
performances.

The Library
Butte County Library is a large rural library system with six branch locations, adult literacy services, and digital literacy outreach. The Library is known for its innovative, hard-working staff, which includes library leaders, program pioneers and numerous grant winners. All staff play an important role in successful programs for all ages. Butte County Library staff serve on many statewide library committees and advisory councils.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in Library Science from an accredited
college or university.
Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional
library experience, at least two (2) years of which must
have been served in a supervisory capacity in a public
library.
A valid State of California driver's license is required.
Under general supervision, assists the Director in managing and directing the Library Department; to
plan, organize and direct the activities of the library branches; and to provide highly complex staff
assistance to the Director of Library Services. The incumbent in this class oversees and directs the
operations and activities of the headquarters branch of the County library system.
SUMMARY
In the absence of the Director of Libraries, to assume the responsibility of the Director as needed.
Assist the Director of Libraries in managing and directing the Library Department.
Assist in developing Department goals and objectives; assist in the development of and
implementation of policies and procedures.
Assist in planning, organizing and directing activities of library branches.
Provide management and supervision of headquarters branch.
Develop and implement branch work plans; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor
work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
Assist in preparation and implementation of Library budget; assist in budget implementation; partici-
pate in the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies.
Recommend the appointment of personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance
evaluations; implement discipline procedures as requested; maintain discipline and high standards
necessary for the efficient and professional operation of the Department.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the
public using principles of good customer service.
Represent the department to outside agencies and organizations; participate in outside community
and professional groups and committees; provide technical assistance as necessary.
Research and prepare technical and administrative reports;
prepare written correspondence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for the Butte County Assistant Director is future-oriented, innovative librarian who
believes in the mission of the local public library and who is a responsive, proactive leader. This
candidate has an aptitude and interest in human resources management and a knack with numbers as
the position serves as the Library’s budget officer.
This person will understand that the library must always be sensitive to the constantly changing needs of
the local communities so an interest in how current and future technologies apply in a library is

Vacation and Other Leave Vacation is based on years of service beginning at 15 days per year. 11 paid holidays per year. 12 days of sick leave per year. 10 days of administrative leave per year.
Health, Dental and Vision Insurance Several plans available with coverage for employees and their eligible dependents. The County contributes a substantial amount of the total cost of the complete package.: $543.78/mo. for employee only, $1,002.30/mo. for employee + 1, and $1,288.41/mo. for family coverage. For those employees who have coverage from other sources and elect not to participate in the Butte County Health Plan, the County offers a monthly taxable Cash-Back allowance of $200 per month.
Flexible Spending Program County employees can elect to participate in a Flexible Spending Program which allows employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for certain health care and/or dependent care expenses. Employees can also choose to have their portion of the monthly Health Plan premium held from their checks on a pre-tax basis.
Life Insurance The County provides $25,000 in life insurance with additional coverage available at a minimal cost.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Relocation Assistance Negotiable assistance for the selected candidate if not from the Butte County area.
Car Allowance $250/Month
Deferred Compensation The County offers a 457 Deferred Compensation program. Deposits into this plan are voluntary and are made through employee payroll deduction on a tax-deferred basis.
Retirement Plan The County is in the Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) coordinated with Social Security: 2% @ 55 for classic PERS members; 2% @ 62 for new PERS members.. Employees contribute 7%.
