The Golden Bears are seeking to finish 2013 with a winning record for the third time in four years. ROAD WARRIORS, MEET THE COMEBACK KIDS Pick a nickname to describe the 2013 Golden Bears and ei- ther could apply. The Golden Bears are 3-1 on the road this year and two of those road wins involved fourth quarter, last minute victories at Bemidji State and at Wayne State. They also trailed at MSU Moorhead early in the game and used last second heroics on a blocked field goal to hold off the Dragons in a 36-34 win. The only road loss was a 24-28 defeat at Upper Iowa in which Concordia had three pass attempts from the UIU 5-yard line to win the game in the closing seconds as well. STRONG START FOR THE GOLDEN BEARS Concordia sits at 4-4, having already doubling last season’s win total. Concordia’s last above .500 finish was in the 2011 season, a 6-5 finish in head coach Ryan Williams’ first season. This year, after a 2-0 start, Concordia-St. Paul cracked the D2Football.com Top-25 Poll with the #25 rank- ing, falling to #23/#24 St. Cloud State in week three. After four weeks, Concordia had a 3-1 start to the season. SERIES NOTES: AUGUSTANA 6, CONCORDIA 3 Concordia is 3-6 entering the 10th meeting against the Vi- kings this Saturday and have lost the last five in the series … Concordia is 2-2 in four prior trips to take on Augustana on the road, but has never won at Kirkeby-Over Stadium in two trips … in the nine prior meetings, six of the games have been decided by one score (8 points) or less … Con- cordia’s last win against Augie was in 2007 in Sioux Falls (20-19) when Concordia won three of the first four contests in the series … Augie is 5-0 against Concordia since the Vikings joined the NSIC. LAST MEETING, 2012: AUGIE 35, CONCORDIA 27 The Golden Bears fell into a 28-10 and 35-13 hole in the fourth quarter against Augustana and nearly crawled out but in the end came just a few bounces short of a comeback. Augustana recovered a pair of Tom Obarski onside kicks in the closing mintues to thwart the rally. Obarski earlier in the fourth quarter delivered an NSIC record, and a 2012 Division II long field goal of 59-yards to close the gap from a 3-score game to a 2-score game to help the rally. The Concordia offense scored twice in the final five minutes to come within 8-points (one score and a 2-pt conversion). James Peterson passed for three touchdowns and 266 yards, while Tre Mason had 105 receiving yards and a touchdown. Nate Thienes caught a pair of touchdowns for his only two catches of the game. The defense was led by Zach Moore’s two first half sacks, as they sacked Josh Hanson four times, hurried him six times and hit him on pass completions multiple times. But Moore was injured late in the first half and did not return, while Hanson was brilliant despite the pressure. He complet- ed 28-of-38 for 289 yards and four touchdowns while adding 54 yards on the ground despite 28 yards lost due to sacks. Hanson found Darren Niklason 10 times for 125 yards and three touchdowns. Dajon Newell led Augie’s ground attack with 17 carries for 108 yards and a TD. Concordia rushed for 107 yards against the Augie defense primarily using three sources. Jason White led the team with 43 yards on just five attempts including a 35-yard run. Tre Spears added 11 carries for 37 with a long of 20 and Peterson rushed for 24 yards on 11 attempts. Three defenders topped 10-tackles led by Jeremy Randle who had 11 while adding a career high 1.5 TFLs. Jordan Halverson added 11 as well. cugoldenbears.com/football cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu u u cu u u u cu go go go go g go go go go go go go go go g go go go go go go g go go g go go g o g g g g ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld d ld ld ld ld l ld d ld ld ld ld l ld en en en en en en en en en en en en en en en en en en n en en en en n n n n n be be be be be be be be be b be be be be be be be be be b be be b b b b be b b ar ar a a ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar r ar ar ar ar r r s. s. s. s. s. s. . s. s. s. s. . s. s. s. s. s s. s. s. s s. s. . . s. s. s. s s. co co co co co co co co co co co co co co c co co co co o co co o o o o co m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m m/ m/ m/ m/ m m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m m / m / m m m m m / fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo o fo f o o fo o f f f ot ot ot ot ot ot ot ot o ot ot ot ot ot ot ot ot ot ot ot o ot o ot ot ot ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba b ba a ba ba ba ba ba ba a b ba ba b b b ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll l ll ll ll ll ll ll cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu cu c cu cu cu cu cu cu cu c c c c c cu cu cu cu u cu cu cu cu cu cu c c cu cu cu cu cu cu cu c c c c c c cu c cu cu cu cu c c c c c c cu cu u cu cu cu cu c go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go g go go go g go go o o go go go go go go go go g go g go go go go go go g go go go go go go g go go o go go g go g go go go go go go go go o g g ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld l ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld ld d ld ld ld ld ld ld d d d d d ld ld ld ld ld ld d d d d d d d d ld ld ld ld ld ld d d d d d d d d ld ld ld ld ld d d d d d d d ld ld ld ld ld d d d d en en en en en en en en en en en en en e en en en en en en e e e en e e en en en n en e e en e en en en en en en en en en en en e e e e e en en en en en en e e e en en en e e e en e en n en e e e e b be b b b b b b b b b b be b be b b b b b be be be be b b b b b be be be be b b be b b be be be b be be be be be b b b b b b be b be be be be be be be be be be be e e e be be be be be be be be e e e e be e be be be be be e e e e e e e e be be be be be e e e be e e ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar a ar ar ar ar ar a a ar a a ar ar ar ar ar ar a ar ar ar ar ar ar ar ar a a ar ar ar ar ar ar a a a ar ar ar ar ar a ar a ar ar r ar ar ar r a a a a a a a a a a a s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s co co co co co co co co co co co co co c co co co co co co co co c co co co c co co co co co co o co co co o co co co co co co co c co co co co c c c c co co co c co co co c co co c co co co co co co co co co co co c c m/ / / / / / / m/ / / / / / / m/ / / / / / / / / m/ / / / / / / / / m/ m/ / / / / / / m/ m/ / / / / / m/ / m/ m/ / / / / / / / / / / / m/ m/ m/ m m m m m m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m m m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ / / m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ m/ / / / fo fo f f f f f f f fo fo f f f f f f f f f f f fo fo f f f f f f f f f f f f fo fo f f f f f f f fo fo fo fo fo f f f f f f fo f f fo fo fo fo f f f f fo fo f fo f f f f fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo fo o o fo o o fo fo fo o o o o o o o o o fo o fo fo fo fo o o o o fo f fo o f fo fo fo fo fo o o o o ot ot ot t ot ot t t t t t t t t ot ot t t t t t ot ot ot ot t t t t t t t ot t ot ot t o ot t t t t t t t t t t ot ot ot ot ot t t t t t t ot ot ot ot ot ot ot ot ot ot ot o o ot ot o o o o o o o ot ot ot o ot t ot o ot o o o o o o ot ot ot ot ot o o o ot ot ot ot t ot b ba b b b b b b b b b ba ba ba ba b b b b ba ba ba ba b ba ba b ba ba ba b ba ba ba b b ba ba ba b b ba ba ba ba ba b ba b b b b b ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba a a a ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba a a a a a b ba ba ba ba ba a b ba ba ba ba a ba ba a a a a a a ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll l ll l ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll l ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll l ll ll ll ll ll l ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll l CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. THIS WEEK: SIGHTS SET ON WINNING RECORDConcordia-St. Paul will play in its fi nal road game of the 2013 season at Augustana on Saturday afternoon looking to get above the .500 mark after a 2-0 and 3-1 start to the season. The Golden Bears are seeking to fi nish 2013 with a winning record for the third time in four years.

ROAD WARRIORS, MEET THE COMEBACK KIDSPick a nickname to describe the 2013 Golden Bears and ei-ther could apply. The Golden Bears are 3-1 on the road this year and two of those road wins involved fourth quarter, last minute victories at Bemidji State and at Wayne State. They also trailed at MSU Moorhead early in the game and used last second heroics on a blocked fi eld goal to hold off the Dragons in a 36-34 win. The only road loss was a 24-28 defeat at Upper Iowa in which Concordia had three pass attempts from the UIU 5-yard line to win the game in the closing seconds as well.

STRONG START FOR THE GOLDEN BEARSConcordia sits at 4-4, having already doubling last season’s win total. Concordia’s last above .500 fi nish was in the 2011 season, a 6-5 fi nish in head coach Ryan Williams’ fi rst season. This year, after a 2-0 start, Concordia-St. Paul cracked the D2Football.com Top-25 Poll with the #25 rank-ing, falling to #23/#24 St. Cloud State in week three. After four weeks, Concordia had a 3-1 start to the season.

SERIES NOTES: AUGUSTANA 6, CONCORDIA 3Concordia is 3-6 entering the 10th meeting against the Vi-kings this Saturday and have lost the last fi ve in the series … Concordia is 2-2 in four prior trips to take on Augustana on the road, but has never won at Kirkeby-Over Stadium in two trips … in the nine prior meetings, six of the games have been decided by one score (8 points) or less … Con-cordia’s last win against Augie was in 2007 in Sioux Falls (20-19) when Concordia won three of the fi rst four contests in the series … Augie is 5-0 against Concordia since the Vikings joined the NSIC.

LAST MEETING, 2012: AUGIE 35, CONCORDIA 27The Golden Bears fell into a 28-10 and 35-13 hole in the fourth quarter against Augustana and nearly crawled out but in the end came just a few bounces short of a comeback.

Augustana recovered a pair of Tom Obarski onside kicks in the closing mintues to thwart the rally. Obarski earlier in the fourth quarter delivered an NSIC record, and a 2012 Division II long fi eld goal of 59-yards to close the gap from a 3-score game to a 2-score game to help the rally.

The Concordia offense scored twice in the fi nal fi ve minutes to come within 8-points (one score and a 2-pt conversion).

James Peterson passed for three touchdowns and 266 yards, while Tre Mason had 105 receiving yards and a touchdown. Nate Thienes caught a pair of touchdowns for his only two catches of the game.

The defense was led by Zach Moore’s two fi rst half sacks, as they sacked Josh Hanson four times, hurried him six times and hit him on pass completions multiple times. But Moore was injured late in the fi rst half and did not return, while Hanson was brilliant despite the pressure. He complet-ed 28-of-38 for 289 yards and four touchdowns while adding 54 yards on the ground despite 28 yards lost due to sacks.

Hanson found Darren Niklason 10 times for 125 yards and three touchdowns. Dajon Newell led Augie’s ground attack with 17 carries for 108 yards and a TD.

Concordia rushed for 107 yards against the Augie defense primarily using three sources. Jason White led the team with 43 yards on just fi ve attempts including a 35-yard run.

2013 CU FOOTBALL | WEEK 9 | AT AUGUSTANA | NOV 2, 1 P.M. | KIRKEBY-OVER STADIUM | SIOUX FALLS, S.D.

LAST WEEK: CONCORDIA 28, WAYNE STATE 24Concordia trailed Wayne State by 11 points (24-13) with under four minutes to play before junior quarterback Jared Russo connected on a pair of touchdown passes and a 2-point conversion to put Concordia ahead.

Russo fi nished the game 13-24 for 183 yards and two touch-downs. He connected with Jermaine Clemon six times for 58 yards including the fi rst touchdown of the fourth quarter as well as the ensuing 2-point conversion. He connected with Cordell Smith four times for 99 yards and the go-ahead touchdown.

Sophomore outside linebacker Josh Trifunov also made a major impact down the stretch, recovering a fumble that set up the fi rst touchdown and forcing the fumble that ended Wayne State’s last minute scoring drive deep in Concordia territory to end the game. Trifunov fi nished the game with 10 tackles, a sack, tackle for loss, fumble forced and fumble re-covery.

Putting all three phases of the game together, Concordia’s Corey Cole had a 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown in the fi rst quarter that gave Concordia a 13-7 lead that the Golden Bears took into halftime. Cole earned NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week as he tied the NCAA record for longest kickoff return. He leads the NSIC and is third in the nation in kick return average (34.5).

While Russo sparked the comeback under center, it was Concordia’s run game that kept the team consistent through-out. Junior running back Tre Spears had his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the year with 19 carries for 134 yards and a fi rst quarter touchdown run. He was spelled by senior Ron-ald Zollicoffer’s eight carries for 47 yards as the duo helped Concordia run for 152 yards on 38 team rushed against WSC.

On special teams, Tom Obarski placed three of his seven punts inside the 20 with a 40.9 average and a long of 51.

Concordia also won the time of possession battle, 32:42 to 27:18 and the turnover battle, forcing three and committing two. Sophomore cornerback had an interception to go with Trifunov’s fumbles.

KEY PROGRAM CHANGESThe 2013 Golden Bears have some new faces on the side-lines. Third year head coach Ryan Williams hired Todd Strop as defensive coordinator. Strop was the defensive co-ordinator of the 2010 National Champion Minnesota Duluth team that relied on a dominant defense to win the title. On offense, Williams opted for a ball control style approach to aid Strop in turning Concordia into a defensive power. The fi rst move was to switch assistant coach assignments between Derek Branch and Mike McHugh. Branch now coaches the running backs and tight ends while McHugh leads the offen-sive line.

The coaching changes coincided with a change in philoso-phy as the program has become a ball control offense with a run-fi rst mentality to put the defense in a better position to succeed.

MEET THE 2013 TEAM CAPTAINSThe 2013 team captains are senior repeat defensive cap-tains Zach Moore (Chicago) and Mike Willett (Woodbury, Minn.) while junior quarterback Jared Russo (Milwaukee) earned the offensive nod. The team decided to have a ro-tating fourth captain each game. The week nine gameday captain is to be announced..

The 2013 rotating gameday captains have been seniors Steven Davis (OL), Ronald Zollicoffer (RB), Chris Ses-son (LB), Jeremy Head (CB), TJ Denson (LB), Raphael Washington (TE), Chris Campbell (DT) and junior Tre Spears (RB).

SEASON OPENING SHUTOUTConcordia recorded a shutout in the season opener, the fi rst shutout for the program since the 2007 season fi nale shutout win over Minnesota Crookston (48-0) at Metrodome, snap-ping a streak of 56 games without shutting an opponent out. On the fl ip side, Concordia has an active streak of 52 games

without being shutout, dating back to a season opening loss at Minnesota Duluth in 2009.

NATIONAL STATISTICAL NOTESThe Golden Bears have excelled in the 2013 team philoso-phy on eliminating negative plays and controlling the ball, ranking highly in the nation and NSIC in several key statistics focused around this philosophy:Category Avg/Pct. INJURIES MOUNTING ON DEFENSEThe Golden Bears have experienced an abnormal amount of injuries to starting defensive players this season affecting the line, linebackers and secondary. In week two, Concordia lost senior defensive lineman Thomas Flack and junior lineback-er Jordan Halverson and neither has returned to the lineup.

In week four, senior linebacker Chris Sesson was injured but returned in week seven after missing two-plus games. Redshirt-freshman backup linebacker Chris Krakau was also injured after the week four game and has yet to return.

In week six, senior cornerback Jeremy Head left with an in-jury and has yet to return to the fi eld, with his backup, sopho-more corner Jordan Nieuwsma, getting injured in practice a few days later and thus unable to move into the starting role. Also in week six, senior safety Mike Willett was injured and missed week’s seven and eight with his status for week nine uncertain.

ALL-AMERICAN ZACH MOORE AKA “SACK MORE”One of the nation’s top pass rushers as a true sophomore in 2010, Zach Moore sat out 2011 as a redshirt and worked with the scout team. Going up against former All-America and Chicago Bears signee left tackle Tyler Hendrickson served him well in his redshirt year.

Named a junior captain in 2012, Moore returned to opposing backfi elds with a vengeance by ranking fi fth in the country with 14.0 sacks and 11th with 21.0 tackles for loss to gar-ner multiple All-America First Team honors including by the American Football Coaches Association.

Now a 6-6, 285 senior, Moore is a complete defensive line-man still capable of pressuring the quarterback but also ad-ept at stopping the run. He’s a two-time team captain in his senior year as well.

He’s a consensus preseason All-America selection, the NSIC South Division Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and ranked as the fi fth overall Division II football player at any position (#3 defense, #2 defensive line) by D2Foot-ball.com.

He’s a two-time NSIC Sack Champion (2010, 2012) as well.

Moore posted a season-high fi ve tackles at MSU Moorhead in week four, adding a sack, TFL and blocked the game win-ning fi eld goal late in the fourth quarter.ZACH MOORE CAREER STATSYear UA A TT TFL SK FF FR INT BLK2009 7 9 16 3.0 2.0 1 0 0 02010 24 18 42 11.5 10.0 1 0 0 12011 redshirted - did not play2012 28 11 39 21.0 14.0 2 0 1 12013 11 11 22 4.5 3.5 1 1 0 1Totals 70 49 119 40.0 29.5 5 1 1 3Career Ranks: 5th 2nd

ABOUT THE VIKINGSThe Golden Bears and Vikings have played iden-tical schedules to date, with Concordia holding a one-game lead over the Vikings. The differ-ences in the two teams’ resumes have been the NSIC North schedule, which Concordia went 3-1 against as the Golden Bears beat Minot State 29-0 while the Beavers beat Augustana 23-17 in three overtimes. In the NSIC South Division, Concordia lost 28-24 at Upper Iowa while Augie defeated the Peacocks 35-6 at home; and Con-cordia beat Wayne State 28-24 on the road while Augie lost to the Wildcats 10-7 at home.

Augustana is 3-1 at home on the season, with the lone home loss to Wayne State. Last week, Au-gustana lost 27-10 at crosstown rival Sioux Falls despite gaining 329 yards of total offense, second most on the season and most since the opener.

Defense has been Augustana’s backbone as the Vikings rank third in the league against the run (125.8), fourth in the league (18th nationally) in scoring defense (18.1) and fi fth in the league in total defense (340.0). Their 20 sacks rank fourth in the league. Jake Lee is fourth in the NSIC with 10.5 tackles for loss and ninth with 4.0 sacks.

Offensively, Dajon Newell leads the team with 350 yards on 108 attempts (3.2) while CJ Ham adds 298 yards on 69 rushes (3.7).

Quarterback Trey Heid, a redshirt freshman, is a dual threat with 1,315 passing yards and nine touchdowns while leading the team with four rush-ing scores and 165 rushing yards.

GOFF MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT AT NOSE GUARDA true freshman starter in 2005 at FCS Division I South Da-kota State, Hank Goff returns to the gridiron for the fi rst time since his rookie season with the Jackrabbits. With SDSU, Goff started the fi nal eight games while leading the team with 5.0 sacks and tying for the team lead with 7.0 tackles for loss.

He left SDSU after one year and entered the military as a United States Marine Corps machine gunner, serving four years as a Marine including being deployed to Afghanistan.

He’s become a regular starter at nose guard in 2013 for the Golden Bears with 17 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss. He posted season-highs at MSU Moorhead with fi ve tack-les and 2.0 tackles for loss in a 36-34 win. He notched his fi rst career interception in week seven against Sioux Falls to stop a fi rst quarter red zone drive by the Cougars.

COREY COLE LEADS DYNAMIC KICK RETURN UNITSophomore Corey Cole entered 2013 competing for the starting quarterback position during fall camp. But during camp, his athleticism allowed the coaching staff to move him to wide receiver and kick returner where he’s not only thrived, but made a huge impact.

He ranks third in the nation and leads the NSIC in kick return average (34.5) sparked by his 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown in a 28-24 win at Wayne State in week eight.

Cole leads the team with 10 plays of 25-plus yards with nine of those coming on kickoff returns.

He’s not the only impact kick returner, as Concordia has 23 kickoff returns of 25-plus yards, with sophomores Jor-dan Nieuwsma and Gabe Boyce producing six and four, respectively, as fi ve players have at least 2 kickoff returns of 25-plus yards.

SPEARS AMONG NSIC RUSHING LEADERSJunior Tre Spears is in his second season as Concordia’s starting running back and for the second-straight year he opened the year with back-to-back 100-yard rushing efforts.

He’s posted four 100-yard rushing performances this year and has had at least 19 carries fi ve times.

He currently ranks 50th in the nation and ninth in the league in rushing yards with 725 (90.6 per game).

As a sophomore in his fi rst year starting last year, Spears ranked fourth in the conference with 885 rushing yards while earning All-NSIC South honorable mention honors.

He topped 1,000 career rushing yards early this season and now has 1,677 at 4.8 per carry with nine rushing TDs.

ZOLLICOFFER A DYNAMIC RB COMPLIMENTHesitate to use the word “backup” when discussing senior running back Ronald Zollicoffer. He’s having a career year in his second season with the program and has had at least eight carries in all but one game topping out with his fi rst career 100-yard rushing game in week seven against Sioux Falls with 15 carries for 119 yards and a career-long 43 yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

On the year, Zollicoffer has 77 carries for 393 yards (5.1) and seven catches for 53 yards with three combined touch-downs. He also averages 19.0 yards on four kickoff returns.

RUSSELL BREAKS OUT AS THIRD BACKTrue freshman running back Bruce Russell had his breakout game against Sioux Falls in week seven, rushing for career-highs 15 times for 66 yards with a long of 16. He should con-tinue to see action in Concordia’s backfi eld going forward.

STARTING QB: JARED RUSSO THE COMEBACK KIDConcordia junior starting quarterback Jared Russo has made 11 career starts and holds three fourth quarter come-back victories with two of this coming in road games in the 2013 season in which he threw late touchdown passes at Bemidji State (4th and 6 at the BSU 19, 46 seconds) and at Wayne State (1st and 10 at the WSC 21, 1:12).

Among NSIC starting quarterbacks, Russo ranks seventh in pass effi ciency (132.4), completing 59.6% of his 171 passes for 1,231 yards and 10 touchdowns with just six intercep-tions. He’s 56th in Division II in completion pct.

He has two games with 200-plus passing yards and four games with 2 or more touchdown passes and has yet to throw more than one interception in a game this season.

INSIDE LINEBACKER NOTESConcordia’s linebackers entered the year anchored by vet-erans Chris Sesson (senior) and Jordan Halverson (ju-nior). They’ve both missed signifi cant time due to injury al-though Sesson returned to the starting lineup in week seven against Sioux Falls.

Sesson recorded his second career sack in the season opener against Minot State and has 130 career tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss. He registered a career-high 11 tackles in his week seven return against Sioux Falls.

Last year, Halverson led the team with 105 tackles while adding 14.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks to earn All-NSIC South Second Team honors. He has the most career tackles on the 2013 squad with 190, has 19.5 career TFL’s and 4.0 sacks.

Junior transfer Jahphet Grant has emerged as a starter in Halverson’s place and has made at least four tackles in four of the last fi ve games including a career-high 11 in week seven against Sioux Falls.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKER NOTESConcordia has a pair of fi rst year starters on the outside, junior Nick Jauch and sophomore Josh Trifunov.

Trifunov plays the “rush” position and leads the team with 74 tackles and has 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He made a career-high 12 tackles in a week four win at MSU Moorhead and again in week seven against Sioux Falls.

In eight games, Trifunov has made at least six stops in each contest. He’s fourth in the NSIC in tackles (9.2/game).

Jauch is Concordia’s “dog” linebacker and entered the year with one career start. He’s Concordia’s third leading tackler with 48 and leads the team with 6.0 tackles for loss while adding 2.5 sacks. He’s also forced two fumbles.

TIGHT END TANDEMSenior Raphael Washington was rated as the 24th best tight end in Division II prior to the 2013 season by D2Foot-ball.com while junior Jermaine Clemon provides an athletic and versatile compliment at the position.

The past three seasons, Concordia has had arguably the best tight end targets in Hayden Vavra and Nate Thienes with Washington and Clemon poised to provide the same threat.

With Concordia running a base offense with two tight ends, the duo is on the fi eld together frequently, also working as an h-back role depending on the formation.

The duo has had a solid season, as Clemon is leading the team with 31 receptions (248 yards). Washington has also been a solid receiving threat with 10 catches for 120 yards (12.0 avg) with a long of 24.

Clemon had a big week eight in a road win at Wayne State, leading the team with six catches, adding 58 yards and catching a fourth quarter touchdown and 2-point conversion in the comeback victory.

In a week four 36-34 win at MSU Moorhead, the tandem com-bined for seven of Concordia’s eight completed passes led by Clemon’s career-high fi ve catches. Clemon topped his career-

high again in week six at Upper Iowa with seven for 49.

CORDELL SMITH ANCHORS WR CORPS AS A TWO-SPORT STAR, ADDING HOOPS TO HIS RESUME’Junior Cordell Smith is the most experienced returning wide receiver for the Golden Bears and broke out for a career-long 66-yard touchdown in the season opening 29-0 win against Minot State.

He leads the team with 352 receiving yards after eight weeks, averaging a team-high 18.5 yards per catch on his 19 recep-tions and leads the team with four receiving touchdowns. His fi ve total touchdowns and 30 points lead the team as well.

Last year, Smith had 43 catches for 627 yards and fi ve touch-downs. He’s topped 1,000 career yards with 1,448 on 90 catches and 15 TDs.He’s also been the primary punt returner, with a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown in a week four win at MSU Moorhead and boasts a 9.1 yard punt return average which ranks sixth in the NSIC on the season.

Smith is also a returning starter on the basketball team. Last year he broke into the starting lineup midway through the season and sparked a 6-1 stretch that helped turn the season around. On the year on the hardwood, Smith averaged 7.3 points and was second on the team with 4.3 rebounds while shooting 46.0% (29-63) from three-point distance.

BOYCE BREAKS OUT AT WIDE RECEIVERWith Smith providing a threat on one side, sophomore Gabe Boyce broke free for career-highs of 10 catches for 82 yards in week fi ve against Minnesota State. He also had four catch-es for 75 yards and a career long 46-yard touchdown in the season opening win over Minot State and four catches for 53 yards and a touchdown in a week six loss at Upper Iowa.

He added a 19-yard touchdown catch in week two, the game-winner with 46-seconds left at Bemidji State for his only catch of the game.

He’s currently second on the team in receptions (27), receiv-ing yards (319) and receiving touchdowns (3).

He played as a true freshman last year, and his fi rst career catch was an 11-yard touchdown at Northern State.

STEADY STEVEN DAVIS LEADS OFFENSIVE LINESenior right tackle Steven Davis is one of the most consis-tent and productive players on the football team. Over his entire career, he’s surrendered just a half sack while grading out above 90% each of the last two seasons.

In the 2013 opener, he topped the offensive line by grading at 86.4% in a 29-0 win over Minot State. He has yet to allow a sack as a senior and is coming off a near-perfect performance in a road win at Wayne State, grading positively on 62 out of 64 snaps (96.9%). He leads the team with a season grade of 86.1%.

WALKER NEARS PERFECTION AT LEFT TACKLEAfter starting the season opener at left guard, junior Law-rence Walker was bumped out to left tackle in week two at Bemidji State where he produced a 95.6% grade, with posi-tive plays on 66 out of 69 snaps. Walker transferred to Con-cordia last season from Division I Northern Illinois, sitting a year of residency due to transfer rules. He’s credited with allowing 1.5 of the eight total sacks by the offensive line this year, while his 80.6% season grade is second on the team.

PROTECTING THE BACKFIELDWith tackles Steven Davis and Lawrence Walker providing excellence and stability to the offensive line, the unit as a whole has thrived. Concordia is second in the league and 23rd in the nation in fewest sacks allowed (8) and is second in the league and fewest tackles for loss allowed (4.9/game).

MIRERI LOCKS DOWN THE CORNERSophomore Jimmy Mireri is in his second year as a starting corner after earning the role midway through last season. In week four at MSU Moorhead, Mireri had four pass breakups and a career-high 11 tackles in a 36-34 victory.

He’s fi fth on the team in tackles with 42 on the season and

Asad had 63 tackles last year and has 172 in his career with 10.5 for loss and seven passes defended.

OBARSKI MAKES KICKING GAME A WEAPONJunior kicker/punter Tom Obarski opened his collegiate ca-reer in 2011 by drilling a 56-yard, school record fi eld goal in a season opening road win at Minot State. He topped that mark in 2012 as a sophomore with a 59-yarder in week nine against Augustana - the longest kick in Division II in the 2012 season, and an NSIC-record.

He has made fi ve of the six longest fi eld goals in school his-tory and was perfect inside of 40 yards in his fi rst 11 career attempts and is now 15-17 from inside 40.

He improved his punting average by over six per punt to 40.8 last year as well. He’s a two-time member of the Fred Mitchell Award Preseason Watch List and is ranked the #17 kicker in Division II entering his junior season (D2Football.com).
