Honors Assignment: Mesoamerica Before and After Colonization

Background: The Maya, Inca, and Aztec civilizations of Mesoamerica were colonized by the Spanish conquistadors during the 16th century.   Each of these civilizations was forever changed by their subjugation to Spanish rule.    Instructions:  Pick either the Aztec or Inca civilization and answer the following questions about that civilization.  Refer to lessons 8.1 “Seeds of Empire”, 8.2 “South and Central America before Imperialism”, and 8.3 “The Rise of the Spanish Empire” for help in answering the questions.  Questions: (5 points each)  1. Where was the civilization centered and what was the civilization like before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors?            2. How did the Spanish conquistadors succeed in colonizing the civilization?            3. What effect did colonization have on the civilization?
