Level: Introductory

Audience Expectations: Pathway for journeyman hairstylist. This is a basic exploration

class. Students will learn the importance of personal grooming, to have a healthy balance

health style & plan.

Approved Alberta Education Resources: Milady Standard Textbook & Salon

Fundamentals (use both books combine materials), CTS HRH Courses.

Audio/ Visual Equipment Requirements: Power point slides, (I made hard & digital

worksheet modules), DVD’s, Internet access, overhead projector and Smart board

Description Of Lab Activities And Practicum Activities: The students will research diff /

similar cultural grooming practices. Health plan project.

Evaluations, Materials/ Worksheets To Be Used: Work sheets are in modules, rubrics for

project (Health Plan)

Alternate Delivery Provisions (Individual, Small Group, Entire Class): Modifications

for learners with disabilities K &E learners e.g. Soft/hard modules, laptops, assignments can

be handed in in different forms e.g. Verbally presented, pictures etc. I can provide more

time and modify assignments and work load.

Day 1 (Jan 31) First Day Of Classes

* Theory: (30 min) Lecture on the concepts. We will discussion issues as a big group about

personal grooming, different types of relationships, health, wellness and how it affects a

person’s self-confidence. (Power Point is shown/ Hard & Digital Modules are used. It has

worksheets in it that highlights important concepts.

* Practical: (40 minutes) Students are put into groups of four’s. Then they will research two

different cultures and compare finding similarities/differences with grooming hygiene

practices.

The students use the cart of portable laptops. Groups will present in class tomorrow.

* First 40 min: Assignment #1 Group Presentations: The students finish working on their

group present their similarities/ differences about cultures and present to class.

* Theory: (35 min) Lecture. Students work through modules as class, class discussion on

concepts, students watch DVD on good and poor health choices /lifestyles. Teacher

introduces/ explains Project. (Due Feb 19)

a class how they think it was created. Also that talks about different hair competitions and

what judges critic competitors on.

Entire Class. Students that are K & E or learners with mild to severe disability will have less

workload. (For example: instead of doing 10 of each technique they will do 5).

version of modules, DI scaffolding techniques can be used, more time allowed to finish

ropes, braids and knotting techniques on mannequin head in classroom.

will do straight/curved and diagonal hair partings. Hair roping braids and knots. (Formative-

teacher gives feed back every time)- Get check marks in module workbooks. (10 of each)

workbook module). They can also work on hair partings, robe braids, knotting techniques. (5

each)

* Theory/ Practical: None. I take my students on a field trip to Skills Canada (All my

cosmetology classes) ALL Day.

!Day 26 (Mar 12)

* Theory: (50 min) Lecture. I talk about skills Canada hair competitions and what is all

involved. The different levels, different categories and show a few mannequin heads that won

in competitions from my previous students.

* Practical: (20 min) Then I talk about the up style practical exam and let students find one in

a hair magazine and cut them out.

* Clean up: (10 min)

Day 27 (Mar 13)

* Theory: (40 min) Lecture. I talk what is on the theory exam and talk more about the

practical exam. (Expectations, how it will be marked, what I will look for etc.) Then I

demonstrate an up style that has incorporated 2-3 techniques the students have learned this is

done in the classroom.

* Practical: (30 min): Students will work on their modules.

* Clean Up: (10 min)

All GO’S & SO’S are the same as above. One new specific out come.

Specific Outcome:

2.4 design, create and secure hairstyle by combining two or more hair design

techniques

Day 28 (Mar 14)

* Theory: None (10 min) Answer any questions students have about exams or anything else.

* Practical: (60 min) Students work to finish up their module work. If completed they can

practice their up styles for exam. They can study for theory exam. I can also give students up

styles to duplicate from pictures I have from hair up styling books.

* Clean Up: (10 min)

Day 29 (Mar 17)

* Theory: None. A guest speaker comes in to talk to students about winning first place in a

few hair competitions. (Up style competitions) Also demonstrates a few techniques and up

styles.

* Practical: (0 min) None. Students ask questions about hair up styles, competitions etc.

Day 30 (Mar 18)

* Theory: None

* Practical: (70 Min) Students have to have all module workbook completed.

* Clean Up: (10 min)

Day 31 (Mar 19) Final Practical Exam- 1 up style on mannequin head. (Individually done

by students) Summative

* I did not do GO’s or SO’s from 3- 9 in program of studies because they are overlapped

from COS 1010 and I have covered them already. Next time when I plan this I would

incorporate COS 2010 Long Hair Design 2. *
