Assignment #11 Genetic Counseling Case StudyLO: To create a genetic disorder report for a case study. EQ: How can we use genetics to solve problems? (Cl.Ev.Re)
AGENDA 12/1-12/2
1. Case Studies
2. Genetic Disorder Report
HOMEWORK
1. Synthesis (till next Wed)
2. Songebob Wksht(Wed)
LEVEL ZERO VOICECATALYST (4 minutes, individual work):
1. Define gene.2. Define phenotype. 3. In humans, the ability to roll the tongue is a dominant trait.
The inability to roll the tongue is a recessive trait. If two individuals homozygous recessive for this trait have a child, what is the chance that the child will be able to roll his tongue?
4. The Punnett square above shows a genetic cross between two tall pea plants. (Phenotype is tall, Genotype is heterozygous Tt). If 75% of the offspring are tall, what type of inheritance occurred?
What is a case study?A case study is about a person, group, or situation that has been studied over time.[1] If the case study, for instance, is about a group
• it describes the behavior of the group as a whole, not the behavior of each individual in the group.
• Case studies can be produced by following a formal research method.
Sickle Cell Anemia – genetic basis
Cystic Fibrosis – genetic basis
Task 1 – 10 min
• Choose a disorder/case study to take on as a genetic counselor• Patient Files
• Each group must do both families, choose who will do what family• Jackson family – sickle cell anemia• Doherty family – cystic fibrosis
Take notes on your family using ¼ of your notes.
Close your laptops and pile them up in the corner of your desks.
10 min – create a pedigreeFocus Question: What do genetic counselors do?
• Create a pedigree of your family. • Predict the inheritance pattern of the
disorder• Sex-linked, autosomal dominant,
autosomal recessive, codominant, incomplete dominance, polygenic
• Use information from your pedigree as evidence to justify your prediction
Create rough draft in NOTES side
Jackson A and Jackson B Doherty A and Doherty B
Groups meet
15 min – Genetic Disorder ReportIndividual Task: Using family history and research on a genetic disorder, write a genetic counseling report for a family.
