SOCIOLOGY 10 – Subcultures/Countercultures Assignment
They perform this under the belief that their ancestros have good and evil spirits which are closely
related with thei lives. It is for this that Garifuna people take great care in providing their dead,
the 3 Ancestral rites.
Garifuna Society Rolls( MAN & WOMEN)
Garifuna men have always been known for their maritime skills since they were mainly away
hunting and fishing from various islands throughout the Caribbean and Central America (Global
Neighbors: Garifuna History, 1). It is not hard to understand then why the Garifuna are both a
“matrilocal”. This means that the women are at the center of the household and descendants
trace their bloodline through their mother’s family.

Part 4)
The Garifuna subculture play a important role in the Honduras culture. It is the Garifunas
that provide most of the turist attraction, for all of their different rituals and traditions. Also they
form part of the most part of the Honduran fish farms. Providing more than80% of the fish in the
country and being responsible of exporting 45% .In the other hand Garifuna culture affects
negatively also the Honduras culture. This is because the Garifuna beliefs are focused on death ,
something we Honduran don’t see with the right eyes. They celebrate and party every time some
one dies “ hoping that they are in a better place” meaning our teenagers could get this costume like
a excuse to kill someone or maybe be affected with the same costume. We cant judge Garifuna
Culture for what they are, it was them who actually build up this country when they were brought
like slaves by the S panish regiment. But we can say that we couldn’t think of a Honduran Society
with out of the Garifuna Subculture. Garifunas make this country a lot better, mostly in sports. As
we know African decendant people are a little better in sports than all actual latin people , because
of their height, weight and physics. Also Garifuna people support greatly on “maquilas” and other
many industries that require hardwork.
