Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
(formerly al-Qaida in Iraq)
Whats in a Name?
The full Arabic term for the
group is al-Dawla al-Islamiyafi al-Iraq wa al-Sham,
translated, the Islamic State
in Iraq and al-Sham. al-Sham
is translated as
the Levant,
hence theacronyms ISIS
and ISIL in English. Daesh is
the Arabic acronym, and the
term rhymes with or suggests
other nefarious
actions/words in Arabic.
Who uses what?
Al-Dawla al-Islamiya, (Islamic
State): members of the
organization
Islamic State of Ir
aq and the
Levant: members of the U.S.
GovernmentIslamic State of Iraq and Syria:
members of the U.S.
Government and the media
Daesh: members of the
Arabic speaking community,
French Government (in SEP2014)
Why the confusion?
Those who choose not to use
the terms ISIS or ISIL may be
trying to take away its
preferred self-identity by de-legitimizing the organization
that calls itself a nation-state.http://www.northeastern.edu/news/2015/11/3qs-what-using-the-name-daesh-rather-
than-isis-or-isil-really-means/
