The kit was compiled by Tim Delaney and Julie Pearce from Curriculum Services at ChallengerTAFE, following consultation with a range of WA stakeholders. The kit was modelled on theVictorian and Queensland Implementation Guides.

Introduction

This guide provides information that will facilitate implementation of the Waste Management sectorof the Asset Maintenance Training Package in Western Australia.

The guide gives details of the following:

• Existing publicly funded courses in WA that will be replaced by the new training programsidentified in the Training Package

Waste Management sector of the Asset Maintenance Training PackageQualifications and Nominal Hours

The following table provides a summary of the qualifications and nominal hours for the WasteManagement sector of the Asset Maintenance Training Package.

The nominal hours assigned to the qualifications relate to the delivery of the qualification in atraditional classroom or laboratory setting. The nominal hours include both delivery andassessment.

Other settings will occur for the development of competence and the hours are therefore indicativeonly, and not prescriptive, for all situations.

Transition Arrangements

Scope of Registration

Training providers are encouraged to deliver Training Package qualifications.

A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) with a scope of registration authorising delivery ofexisting accredited courses should contact the Training Accreditation Council (TAC) if they wish tochange their scope.

Existing Courses

Existing Western Australian courses affected by the introduction of the new Training PackageQualifications should be retired as soon as practical after 31 December 2001. However, RTO’s maycontinue to enrol students in old courses in 2002; but all new students must be enrolled in the newTraining Package Qualifications in 2003.

Transition to New Qualifications

Learners nearing the end of their courses by December 2001 should be allowed to complete them.

Learners currently studying accredited courses in the Waste Management Industry, except forTraineeships, should be encouraged to transfer to the new Training Package qualifications. Anylearner part way through course requirements should be given the opportunity to transfer to the newqualifications. If required, an assessment against the competencies of the new qualifications shouldbe offered.

Model Training Programs

Units of competence may be customised so that the tasks involved in demonstrating competence aredesigned to meet the requirements of an individual enterprise or to satisfy regulations in a particularstate or territory.

Each of the 3 qualifications in the Waste Management sector of the Asset Maintenance TrainingPackage may be customised to meet the context in which the training is taking place. Aqualification can also be customised to accommodate a learner’s chosen career pathway.
