Year 9 Book

Last week White Water Writers came into Thamesmead to work with a

group of Year 9 students to help them write a book. White Water Writers is

a project which facilitates university student volunteers whose role is to

help young people structure their ideas and use special software. Adults do

not offer their opinions on any element of the plot or character

development - they simply help young people to discuss their options. This

method ensures the young people have complete responsibility and control

over the book. The students worked really well and the book is now

available to buy on Amazon! Mrs Campbell

Calling All Young Carers!

Here at Thamesmead we are committed to ensuring that all our students

get the support they require both inside and outside of school and, to this

effect, we want to identify any young carers we have on roll so that we can

give them - or find them - any assistance they may need.

What is a Young Carer?

A young carer is someone aged 18 or under who helps look after a relative

who has a condition, such as a disability, illness, mental health condition, or

a drug or alcohol problem. Most young carers look after one of their

parents or care for a brother or sister. They do extra jobs in and around the

home, such as cooking, cleaning or helping someone to get dressed and

move around. Some children give a lot of physical help to a brother or

sister who is disabled or ill. Along with doing things to help their brother or

sister they may also be giving emotional support to both their sibling and

their parents.

I think I am/my child is a young carer, what should I do?

All you need to do is contact Ms Chambers or Mrs Broughton at the school

and let them know. You can do this by phone or email (

[email protected]

[email protected] ) and then they will get on the case

to ensure the right support is there for your family. The first thing they will

do is ensure that a ‘young carer’s needs assessment’ is carried out by the

local authority - this is to decide what kind of help you and your family

might need.

But I don’t want other people to know I am/my child is a young carer…

Don’t worry we will be very discreet and discuss all courses of action with

you, so please get in touch so that your family is appropriately supported.

Book Amnesty

Have you still got a book on loan?

Have you ‘just’ borrowed a book and forgotten to bring it back?

Have you seen a library book just sitting in a classroom?

During July there is an amnesty for returning any library book - no

questions asked, no fines, no fuss. Please return books to the Learning

Centre a.s.a.p.

Current cost to replace Overdue and Missing books is £1364!

Lost Property

As always we have collected a lot of lost property during this term. Lost

property is kept in the main office so please encourage students to come

and have a look as any remaining items will be disposed of on Thursday

16th

July.

bold colours. Thamesmead colours would be good. Printed designs should

be submitted to the main office by Thursday 16th

July or emailed to

[email protected] The winner will receive 100 vivo points. Get

designing and good luck everyone!

Peter Pan – KS3 School Musical

Mastermind Competition

Thamesmead hosted a fantastic Mastermind competition on Wednesday

evening. It was a lovely event with 12 students showing off excellent

general and specialist knowledge and winners earning vivos. Thank you to

who provided questions and came to watch.
