Growing Wildflowers• Fall is the best time to plant.• Select a well-drained site that gets at least 5 hours of sunlight each day.• Remove vegetation and rake soil lightly to a depth of 1 inch.• Thoroughly mix 1 part wildflower seed with 4 parts sand or potting soil.• Scatter the seeds uniformly over the prepared area.• Press seeds into the soil by walking over the area. Do not cover seeds any

deeper than 1/16 inch. Some seeds will remain visible, but they must be in firm contact with the soil to germinate.

• Most wildflowers do well without regular watering, but if there is a prolonged dry spell, give your wildflowers a drink.

• As seeds germinate, use the seedling pictures on the front of the wheel to identify your new wildflowers and predict the blooms you'll see next year.

Fun Facts• When the bluebonnet was chosen to be the Texas state flower,

the runners-up were prickly pear cactus and the open cotton boll.• Eleven Texas wildflowers are endangered species. One of them is

the Navasota ladies'-tresses, which has been found only in Grimes and Brazos Counties.

• It is not illegal to pick wildflowers, but it is illegal to trespass on private property and to damage government property (including road rights-of-way). Don't dig up clumps of flowers, and don't drive over them. If everyone did, there might someday be few wildflowers left.

• Each fall the Texas Department of Transportation sows more than 60,000 pounds of wildflower seed along highways.

• Some flowers you see growing wild are not true native Texas wildflowers, but nonnative species that have "escaped" from gardens and other plantings.

Texas is known for its abundant wildflowers. In fact, there are more than 1,000 species of wildflowers in Texas. This wheel features 16 of the most common ones. Watch for them along Texas roadways, in parks, or even in

your own backyard. Wildflowers beautify Texas landscapes in almost every season.
