Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
• On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated by a Bosnian Serb.– Many chain events occurred and by early August of that same
year, World War I had begun.
– It provided Austria with an excuse to take action against Serbia.
– He was assassinated because he had annexed provinces that had belonged to Serbia.
Militarism
• Militarism is when the military is given a high profile by the government.– The militaries of many countries had begun to
double due to other events surrounding what was going on in the world.
• As countries were building armies, Britain and Germany had other ideas in starting up their own Navy and creating their own battleships and their own submarine boats.
Nationalism
• Nationalism- strong supporters of one’s country• Large areas of both Austria-Hungary and Serbia were home to
different nationalist groups. All of whom wanted freedom from the states they lived in.
• Germany’s nationalist group were called the Nazi’s
Imperialism
• Imperialism is when countries take over new lands or countries and makes them subject to their rule.
• Many lands were being conquered by large empires and the smaller empires had began to have problems with this.
• This led into a big controversy and eventually war broke out between different empires among Europe
