India’s longest Ropeway over a river inaugurated in Assam The Assam government has inaugurated a 1.8-km-long ropeway over the Brahmaputra, connecting
Guwahati to North Guwahati in Assam.
Connecting Kachari Ghat (Guwahati) to Dol Govinda Temple on the northern bank, the ropeway

The ropeway cuts travel time between the two banks to 8 minutes. The current travel options
between the two banks are by ferry (30 minutes or more) or by road through a bridge that usually
takes over an hour in the traffic.
Apart from substantially reducing travel time, the ropeway will provide a breathtaking view of the

Kazi 106 F, the tigress, resides in world heritage Kaziranga National Park of Assam. It is also known
as ‘Tabby tiger’ or ‘Strawberry tiger’.
The skin of tigers is orange-yellow with black stripes and whitish abdominal region.
The yellowish background is controlled by a set of ‘agouti genes’ and their alleles and the black colour
stripes are controlled by ‘tabby genes’ and their alleles. Suppression of any of these genes may lead
to colour variation in tiger.
Agouti genes interacts with the pigment cells to produce yellow to red or brown to black expression.
This interaction is responsible for making distinct light and dark bands in the hairs of animals such
as the agouti here same is happening in our tigress – Kazi 106 F.

It usually increases when pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries,
chemical plants, and other sources chemically react in the presence of sunlight, impacting human health.
Scientists at the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital have
evaluated the near surface ozone in the Brahmaputra River Valley (BRV) and found relatively low
concentration of Ozone over Guwahati compared to the other urban locations in India.
The examination of nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone concentrations in this study suggested
that this site is well influenced by local sources such as adjacent major national highway. During the
daylight hours, the site is in or nearly in a photo-stationary state, indicating a low impact of organic
species on the ozone concentrations.
Assam Inland Water Transport Project Government of Assam, Government of India and World Bank signed 88 million USD agreement to

The aim of Assam Inland Water Transport Project (AIWTP) is to help Assam improve its ferry
infrastructure and strengthen institutions operating inland water transport.
It also aims at introducing new and energy efficient vessels with least disturbance to nature. The
project also includes cargo transport vessels in the route.
The inland water transport is the most sustainable water transport for Assam. This is mainly because

Textile of Assam The indigenous handicrafts that in other parts of the country are confined to professional castes were
practiced as household industries in the valley of the Brahmaputra.
In Assam proper, there is no dearth of raw materials. Indigenous manufacturers consisted of thread
and fabrics, cotton textiles, brass utensils, oil extracted from mustard or til seeds gur or molasses,
jewelleries, articles of ivory and agricultural implements.
Every family in Assam proper had looms to meet the requirement of the household. The looms were
infact the center of domestic economy, the only hope of salvation in an hour of distress or despair.
Cotton manufactures- churias, chaddars, barkapors, khania kapor and gamochas- were entirely in the
hands of women of all classes, although women of respectability and position usually prepared only
the finest fabrics- asu or asuli poreah, gunnah, kotah, gai bonkara- resembling the muslins of Dacca.

After 129 years Assam Keelback snake rediscovered The Keelback snake species Assam Keelback has been rediscovered in Assam-Arunachal Pradesh
border after 129 years. It was first seen in 1891 when a British tea-planter Samuel Edward Peal
collected two male specimens from upper Assam’s Sivasagar district.
Scientific Name: Herpetoreas pealii.
It is a species of snake in the subfamily Natricinae of the family Colubridae.
The species is endemic to Northeast India. It has been recorded from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The species is small — about 60 cm long, brownish, with a patterned belly.
It was discovered 129 years ago in 1891 by Samuel Edward Peal, a British tea planter based in Upper
Assam.
The discovery of the Assam Keelback from a slow-flowing stream inside a forest indicates the need to prioritize conservation of ‘special habitats’ to safeguard micro-habitat specialized species.
