work on calendar, plan for Friday Night Fun, and generally get caught up and plan ahead. We will be in the building, but we may be out of the

office and/or away from the phone.

As we continue our preparations for fall program, Ellen and Wendy will be closing the office on Wednesday, August 21 for another Organization

Day. We use this day to give us unin-terrupted time to clean and organize,

I think spring and fall are my two favorite seasons. I love the time of transition, and all the changes that come, with the beautiful colors and crisp, cool mornings of fall, and the new life awakening in the spring. I also get excited about what’s hap-pening here at Delta during those seasons. Spring is about Lent and Easter, and fall is the return after a summer away for many of you. I re-turn from vacation renewed, with en-ergy and ideas. I’m always excited about catching up with all of you, and

the fall sermon series is something that excites me. I look forward to see-ing the kids at Friday Night Fun. I love my conversations with them during the children’s sermon. I enjoy hearing the committees make plans. The start of the calendar year is officially Janu-ary 1st, and the start of the liturgical year is the first Sunday of Advent. The start of the program year is Sep-tember, and I hope all of you will join us as we kick it off on September 8th with Communion and a Fellowship Meal.

Incarnation If with heart and soul you’re doing good, do you think you can be stopped? Even if you suffer for it, you’re still better off. Don’t give the opposition a second thought. Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration be-fore Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy. 1 Peter 3:13-16a (The Message)

Praying The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray espe-cially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live. 1 Timothy 2:1-3 (The Message) Inspired by Spiritual Disciplines Handbook, by Adele Ahlberg Cal-houn.

munity of prayer and meditation. It began as a Protestant ecumenical community, which has grown to in-clude Catholics as well; its 80 or so brothers come from many different countries. The Community remains dedicated to fostering, particularly, ecumenical understanding and pro-moting, more largely, the message of God’s reconciling love for all of hu-manity. As the Taizé Community became a popular pilgrimage and retreat center, it developed its own particular style of worship. It normally includes candle-light, prayers, readings, silence, and soft music with repetitive words led by keyboard and flute, or violin, and oth-er instruments. Taizé worship has become widely practiced in many parts of the world and it has had a large impact on the development of

An Exercise in Yoga

Delta offers a yoga class on Monday mornings at 9:30 am. Come join the class for a time of stretching and re-laxing exercise. Please enter using the back door on the lower level. There is no cost to this class. There will be no classes in August, but will resume on Monday, Septem-ber 9.

Taizé Prayer Worship Starts Sun-day, September 22, 6:30 pm

Our evening Prayer Worship is tak-en largely from the music and liturgy of the Taizé Community. Taizé (the-zay) is a small town located in east-ern France not far from the town of Cluny. In 1949 a group of seven “brothers” founded the Taizé Commu-nity as an ecumenical monastic com-

what is often called “alternative wor-ship” today. Since April of 2013, we have been offering monthly Taizé worship ser-vices. It has been a partnership with Bretton Woods Covenant Church, and individuals from at least 4 differ-ent churches have been involved in leadership. Our first one for this fall will be Sunday, September 22, at 6:30 pm. This is a quiet service of Scripture, prayer, repetitive music, and silence. You are invited to come join us.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4

God continues to work in and through us here at Delta, and as always, there is reason for us to rejoice.

We rejoice in the opportunity to work a new concession booth this fall at MSU stadium. The new one is more spacious and doesn’t involve ramps.

We rejoice in our members who are willing to fill the pulpit while Wen-dy is away. We rejoice that Property Team has successfully taken care of the rac-coons, who had sought to reestablish their previous home in our attic. We rejoice that the graffiti is now painted over on the east side of the building. Thank you, Property Team! We rejoice that the Community Garden plots are full and much ap-preciated. We rejoice in Fran Johnston’s ser-vice as financial secretary. We are grateful that she was willing to take on this new ministry after Sarah Dy-mond retired. Thank you also, Fran, for your volunteer work making the Sunday morning Power Point slides.

We rejoice with our members who retired this spring: John Elsinga, Kris Fry, and Bill Stirling. We rejoice in the work members did at Camp Greenwood, building a new gaga pit, repairing the seating near the lake, and sealing the picnic tables they built last summer. We rejoice in the five new thermo-stats that Consumer’s Power gave us. All 6 of the thermostats in the building are now programmable, which should save us money. Be-cause the new ones are now con-nected to WiFi, they can be controlled from a computer or smart phone. What gives you cause to rejoice around Delta? Where do you see God at work? Let us know in the of-fice and we will include it in the Octo-ber newsletter.

Prayers and Squares

Delta quilters are looking for people to join their wonderful minis-try and fellowship. Starting on September 4 the Quilters will meet every Wednesday, 9:30 am. You don’t even need to know how to quilt or sew; there are also opportu-nities to cut or iron or pin. If you have any questions, just ask Rhonda Fort or Bonnie Reemsnyder.

Mad Hatters

The knitting & crocheting service group is meeting in the La Leche room downstairs on Mon-days, 3-5 pm. If you have any questions, please call the church office, 321-3569.

Once again this year we will be of-fering Friday Night Fun to our congre-gation and community. FNF is open to all children from 3 years old (and potty trained) through elementary school. We offer it on the second Fri-day of the month from 6-9 pm. While parents enjoy an evening out, we offer a Vacation Bible School type experience to the children. We sing (and dance), consider a Bible story,

do crafts, have a science experiment, play games, and generally spend a fun Friday evening together. Who do you know that would appre-ciate an opportunity to have a night out while their children have fun and learn about Jesus? We have updat-ed brochures available at the Com-mitment Center. All participants need to fill out a new registration form for this year.

One simple thing will make a big difference in the life of an at-risk child: one-on-one, positive atten-tion from a responsible, caring adult. Kids Hope USA develops these one-on-one relationships through the creation of church-school partner-ships that pair church members with at-risk kids in supportive, mentoring relationships. Kids Hope mentors spend just one hour per week reading, talking, play-ing, and listening to a child at school. By helping the child feel loved and valued, they help that child to learn, grow and succeed.

All Kids Hope mentors are thor-oughly trained by the program direc-tor, using comprehensive materials provided by the Kids Hope USA Na-tional Office. On-going supervision and support is provided to all volun-teers by the program director. You can change a life…and that’s no small change.

If you are interested in mentoring one of these at-risk children, please contact Jan or Roger Small, 323-9238.

Personal Needs

One of our mission projects at Delta Presbyterian Church is contributing to the Personal Needs Closet at North-Westminster Church. Personal needs items are collected in the big brown box at the top of the stairwell. Alt-hough you may donate items at any time, we designate the third Sunday of each month as a time to focus on this ministry.

Personal Needs items include toilet paper, laundry soap, bleach, dish soap, bar soap, paper towels, tooth-paste, shampoo, tampons, pads, deo-dorant, tissues, diapers and other items that cannot be purchased with a SNAP Card (food stamps).

at 6 p.m. This Vacation Bible School style program offers music, a Bible story, crafts, activities and lots of fun to children age 3 (and potty trained) through elementary school. It offers their parents a night out. There are brochures at the Commitment Center. “Come and see.” Our dedicated group of Sunday School teachers are making plans for the beginning of Sunday School on September 8. In-vite families you know to come to church and bring their children. “Come and see.” The quilters (Prayers and Squares) meet Wednesday mornings at 9:30. Come join the fellowship. Sewing expertise or experience is not a requirement; there are plenty of other things you can do, and great fellowship. “Come and see.” Mad Hatters gather at 3:00 Monday afternoons. Even if you don’t know (or remember) how to knit or crochet, join us and we will provide you with materials and as much help as you need. The conver-sation is always interesting. You don’t

need to be a member to participate in the fellowship. The hats that are made are distributed in a variety of different places in the Lansing area and beyond. “Come and see.” The choirs re-sume on Thursday, September 5. The Bellievers meet at 6:15 pm, and Celebration Choir meets at 7:30 pm. Anyone is welcome to join the Cele-bration Choir. If you are interested in bells, talk to Sarah Dymond. We are always in need of subs, which is a good way to learn. “Come and see.” God is at work in and through us here at Delta.

45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, Joseph’s son, from Nazareth.” 46 Nathanael responded, “Can any-thing from Nazareth be good?” Philip said, “Come and see.” John 1:45-46

As we move into fall, there are many opportunities to invite your friends and neighbors to come and see what God is doing in and through us. Pray that God would open your eyes to those opportunities and con-sider what we offer that might interest someone you know. Then invite them to, “Come and see.”

“Come and see.” Our fall worship series will focus on things we do to find peace in a chaotic world as we consider ways we can strengthen our relations with Christ. There is infor-mation on the Commitment Center for you to share. “Come and see.” Friday Night Fun will resume on Friday, September 13

40, forty, cueranta, quarante, σαράντα, vierzig. No matter how you say it or spell it, that’s how long Delta has been running a concession stand at MSU football games. This is year 40. For the past 38 years we have called Upper B home. So what’s new to celebrate this momentious anniversary? How about a new home? A new booth, not just for us, but for the stadium. A new booth with lots of room, no more banging into each other as we try to pass by. Pre-cooked dogs and brats, no more balancing on step stools trying to peer into a pot of boiling water looking for the elusive tube steak. Refrigerators for bottled water; no more trips to the shed to get ice to pour onto cut-off 55-gallon drums to cool down water. About 54 feet of cashier sales space as opposed to something like 24. Product within easy reach of the cashiers, maybe no more mad scrambles to get something. Box our own popcorn on demand, no more balancing acts finding a place to store or retrieve pre

-boxed product. Ground floor location, NO MORE RAMPS!!!!! Endless hot water for hot cocoa, no more hoping the boilers can keep up and not leak. Stainless steel counters, no more wooden shelves. Honest to goodness cash drawers, no more trays semi-screwed to the counters. Closer to the bank; no more scrounging for change while waiting for the banker to make the long trek. New expanded menu, just ask us what a “walking taco“, or “churros“, or “tailgate chili“ is. All supplies on site, no more battling the crowds trying to get from the shed to the booth. After completing 39 years, we deserve an upgrade and we sure got it. Your management team couldn’t be happier and all who have seen the new digs are just as excited. Yes, there will be learning curve, but with everyone‘s cooperation, we can make this an exciting and profitable year. September is traditionally the “money“ month. (That is, it is the month with the highest volume of sales.) This year four of the seven

home games will be completed before the end of September. Everything is looking good for a terrific year. There is something for everyone, regardless of skill level, to do. With no more ramps to navigate, access is as easy as walking around a quarter of the stadium. The work is easy, the fellowship priceless.Give it a try. There are often car pools from the church’s parking lot. The sign-up sheet is at the Commitment Center; sign up early and often. Remember to do the background check, either online (link on the home page of deltapresby.org) or forms which the office can fax in are by the sign-up sheet. Got a question? Give Frank a call at 517-323-4231. Thank you for your continued support.

heart, kidneys, and blood pressure to normal levels, but I can still crochet and cut fabric when I return (the fab-ric closet looks amazing, Trudie.) I think of all of you daily. Love & Prayers, Holly [LaPratt]

Women of Delta-Ladies’ Night Out

Need a ladies’ night out? The first Wednesday of every month the ladies of Delta meet at a different area res-taurant for dinner and conversation. It is a wonderful way to get to know each other outside of our church building. We order off the menu, sep-arate checks. The only requirement is that you email Bonnie Reemsnyder at

[email protected] by Mon-day evening prior if you intend on coming. That allows Bonnie to have a number of attendees so that Mary Jo Kelley can phone in a reservation. Our next night out is September 4, 5:30 pm, at Cancun Mexican Grill in Grand Ledge
