Drug Card Name of Drug: Aspirin Generic Name Aspirin ASA Trade Name Bufferin Classification: Pharmacologic  NSAID Therapeutic Analgesic, Antipyretic, Antithrombotic FDA Category Mechanism of Action/Uses: non-narcotic mild to moderate pain relief for head aches, injury, menstrual cramps, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions Correct Dosage Range and Route:  50 mg to 6000 mg daily depending on the use, PO, Enteric coated 325mg or 500mg tablets Common Side Effects: ulcerations, abdominal burning, pain, cramping, nausea, gastritis, gastrointestinal bleeding and liver toxicity Contraindications: Gastric disorders, bleeding disorders, hypersensitivity to aspirin or other NSAIDs, elderly cigarette smokers, patients with Hpylori, heart failure Nursing Process: Pre-administration Assessment Rate and determine type and location of pain, take complete drug history and ask for allergies Do physical assessment, test stool and urine for blood, use caution for nursing moms,pregnant, gastric or peptic ulcers, diabetes, or bleeding disorders. Interventions/Patient Teaching Tell patient to take medication as perscribed. Take with milk, full glass of water, or food to avoid irritation, sit up for at least 30 min after taking. Call doctor or gastric irritation, or for ringing in the ears. Evaluation Check 30-60 minutes after administration for relief of pain, joint mobility, assess temperature to note decrease, reduction in inflammation, prophylaxis of MI/TIA (transient ischemic attack).
