Task 1: Accessing Aspire

1a. Go to http://lists.hope.ac.uk

1b. Log in (top left hand side of page) with your network username and password

If this is the first time you have used Aspire you may need to be invited. Ask one of

the library staff to send you an invitation. You will be asked to set up a profile; just

basic information will do for now as you can edit it later.

Task 2: Installing the bookmarklet tool

2a. Select My bookmarks

2b. First you need to ensure your can see your bookmark toolbar. If you can’t, follow the

instructions below for the browser you are using; we recommend Chrome or Firefox.

Chrome Firefox Internet Explorer Ctrl + Shift + B

Right click on the empty space next to the tabs bar

2c. Click on (right hand side of screen)

2d. Follow the on-screen instructions – they will be different for each browser.

2e. You will need to install the bookmarklet tool for every device you use.

Task 3: Creating your reading list

3a. Select My Lists

3b. Then click on

3c. Give your list a meaningful name so you can

find it easily, perhaps the course code and

name.

No need to complete the other boxes.

Click Create List.

3d. Verify that you are the owner of the

list.

3e. You will be presented with a blank screen which needs to be populated with bookmarked

items, but first you may wish to set up a list structure. This can be based on priorities, weeks,

resource types etc., it‘s entirely up to you.

3f. To add sections to your list (you can do it later if you are not sure how to set it out), just

pick up the New Section bar by the symbol and drag it into the large grey area.

3g. Name your section e.g. Week 1, Priority

reading, Introduction to the topic etc.

Add a study note if desired.

Then Save

3h. Your list should look something like the one

below, ready for you to add your bookmarks.

Task 4: Adding items from the library catalogue

4a. Open a new tab in your internet browser and navigate to the library catalogue or type in

the URL www.hope.ac.uk/gateway/library. Click on Library Catalogue.

4b. Find a book you want to add to your reading list and click on the title. Your screen should

look similar to below.

4c. Click on the bookmarklet tool called Add to My Reading List or whatever you have named

it.

4d. Aspire will automatically add the book’s

full bibliographic details.

4f. You can - select the right list - whether you want it at the top or bottom of the list - the section you want the book to appear in - assign a priority of importance NB. Ignore Note for the library

4f. Continue to search the library catalogue to add more bookmarks as above.

4g. Go back into the Aspire Reading List (you should still have it open in a tab at the top of

the screen) and see if your books have been added. You may need to press F5 to refresh

the screen. Book details should be in the left section of the reading list with book marks on

the right.

4h. Adding e-books Search for e-books on the library catalogue in exactly the same way as for print, but do not bookmark from the library catalogue. You must click on the link within the full record which takes you directly to the e-book.

4i. We recommend you add [E-book] next to the title.

Task 5: Adding journals articles and titles

5a. First ensure that the article is available on Online Library.

It is best to bring up the entry in the database, not the PDF

Sometimes you may need to add an online articles or journal titles manually

5c. First ensure that the article is available on Online Library.

5d. From within Aspire select My Bookmarks

5e. Select Add bookmark then Add manually

5h. Build up the rest of the citation by selecting the appropriate elements from the drop-down

options.

5g. First select Add to include

the Author box then enter the

author’s name as instructed on

screen (first name in the first box,

surname in the second box)

Your screen should look like this:

5i. Next select Part of (book, journal etc.) from the drop-down options. Click Add

5f. Change this to Article 5g. Enter the title here

5j. A new tab will open. You need to follow the same principal of adding each element until

you build up the citation as below. Include ISSN, Date, Volume Number, Issue Number

and Pages.

5h. When you have the full citation details click

Task 6: Adding web pages and PDF articles found on the Internet

6a. First, search for the web page you wish to add then use the bookmarklet tool to add to

your reading list. The screen will split as below; edit as follows.

6c. You can bookmark PDF articles that you find on the Internet in exactly the same way as

above, but in this case ensure the Resource Type is Document. Add in the title if

necessary. Other fields may be added as above.

Ensure this says

Webpage or

Website

You may need to

edit the title e.g.

remove the line at

the start of the title

If there is an author

you can enter by

adding the author field

Task 7: Adding previously saved bookmarks to your list

This can be quite useful if you are browsing e-resources or ‘surfing the net’ and spot

a useful resource, but are not sure in which list to place it.

7a. Bookmark items in the same way as previously, but instead of selecting select

7b. Next time you are in Aspire go to My Lists

7c. Select your list from the table

7d. Select Edit then Edit list

7e. ALL your bookmarks will appear on the right hand side of the screen, simply drag them

across using the as you did when creating sections.

Task 8: Publishing your reading list

You will notice from the example below that the lists are given different statuses,

Draft, Published and Unpublished changes.

Until you publish your list, or publish any susequent changes, students will see

neither the list nor any changes.

8a. You can publish your list from the table. Click on Select Action and choose Publish

from the drop-down options as below

8b. or you can publish when in editing mode:

However, you will not see your list on Moodle until it is linked to your course…

Task 9: Aspire reading lists – How to link a list to a course on Moodle

9a. Go to the Home tab

9b. search for the course you require; if

you know the code then enter this,

otherwise enter some keywords. Do not hit

Search.

9c. Look for the one described

as module. Click to select.

9d. Click Add List then type in the

name of your reading list in the pop up

search box . Select the correct list.

Congratulations! You have now completed your reading list.

9e. To view your reading list go to your course Moodle. It should automatically be placed at

the top left of the Moodle course, or you can embed the link if preferred.

Task 10: Managing your reading lists

10a. The Dashboard

You can monitor usage of items in your reading list via the

This uses a traffic light system to show you how many clicks each item has received. Of

course it cannot tell you if the student has actually read the item!

10b. Invite colleagues to contribute to your list You may do some team teaching or value the contribution of others to your list. To invite them to contribute to your list simply click on Edit and from the drop-down options select Invite List Publishers. If you want to ensure your original list remains intact you can always Copy it first.
