What will Aspire@BCH do for you?’ Birmingham Children’s Hospital believes passionately in embracing the talents and skills of young people across the city, and beyond. We know that without bringing our young people on board, we will face many challenges in the future in filling important roles helping to ensure that we continue to deliver the very best care to our patients and families. We also believe in playing an important role in the health and wellbeing of young people, and our Aspire@ BCH programme provides a range of access, experience and employment which we know contributes to better mental and physical health. Aspire@BCH is something we are extremely proud of. We have established partnerships both externally and internally. Our staff and teams are both enthused and excited by what Aspire@BCH has to offer to them, and we have seen a high number of our talented individuals who have taken part in our traineeships, apprenticeships or internships, go on to secure a permanent role with Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which is just one measure of how successful we have been so far. Our employability programme, to provide jobs for young people with learning disabilities, is another strand of this work, and something which we envisage will continue to grow. I hope that you find the newsletter interesting and inspiring. ‘Aspire@BCH helped, inspired, motivated and changed me. What will

Aspire@BCH do for you?’

Birmingham Children’s Hospital believes passionately in embracing the talents and skills of young people across the city, and beyond. We know that without bringing our young people on board, we will face many challenges in the future in filling important roles helping to ensure that we continue to deliver the very best care to our patients and families. We also believe in playing an important role in the health and wellbeing of young people, and our Aspire@BCH programme provides a range of access, experience and employment which we know contributes to better mental and physical health.

We offer internships to give young people the opportunity to gain paid work experience within the NHS, by focusing on specific projects that will help to develop a range of skills. Apprenticeships are a chance to earn, learn and achieve nationally recognised qualifications at the same time.

Here is what intern Samantha Farnworth has said about her time here so far:

“It has been fantastic meeting so many people that are so enthusiastic about providing the best patient care possible as well as a friendly and supportive working environment. I feel thoroughly welcomed into the Trust family.”

We will catch up with them as they continue to settle into their roles.

Details of these roles and how to apply can be found on our website.

We welcomed ten students to our Structured Work Experience Week recently, from Monday 20 October to Thursday 23 October.

The students enjoyed the week, in particular, the placements in Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Ward 10, Ward 5 and Hands and Plastic Surgery. They also learned a lot during their time here, and said the work of the medical staff in Oncology was ‘fascinating’ and that the ‘dedication and skills of all the staff at Birmingham Children’s Hospital inspired’ them.

We wish them all the best in their futures and we cannot wait to meet the next group of students!

A big thank you to all the staff and departments who took part in the week, whether it was by having a student shadow you for the day or delivering a talk.

Our next Structured Work Experience Week will be Monday 16 February until Thursday 20 February 2015. If you are a student and want to apply, or you are a member of staff and are interested in participating in the Work Experience programme, please email us at [email protected]

Work Experience

Working for usEvery year, Aspire@BCH supports the recruitment of graduates onto our own internship scheme. The scheme gives young people the opportunity to experience the world of work, focusing on key projects that will give them a range of experiences and skills. Ebru Heyberi-Tenekeci started working in the Education and Learning Department in September 2014. Here is what she has to say about her role. What is your role and what does it involve?

I am an E-Learning Technologist. This role involves maintaining and developing the Trust’s Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) including course creation and user management as well as developing a range of cross-platform compatible multi-media resources. As part of this role, I work in close collaboration with authors, instructional designers and editors to maintain high levels of content accuracy.

What previous experience and qualifications do you have?

For three years, I worked as a Researcher at the University of Birmingham on e-learning in rural schools. Before this, I was an Assistant Distance Learning Course Programme Developer at Aston University for several years. I also worked at JMP Consultant Ltd. in 2007 with Information and Technology Management. I also have a PhD in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Education.

What do you like about working at Birmingham Children’s Hospital?

I like working here as the people here are all very friendly and helpful. Most importantly, they make you feel that you are part of the team. I am now thinking about furthering my career after my internship.

What would you say to other people considering applying for an Internship here?

Interning with Birmingham Children’s Hospital is great because you get to work with so many brilliant people. They are dedicated to their work and to your future and are willing to set aside their work to guide you and help you learn and grow. Also, Interns here have the opportunity to work in different departments in their shadow week. The people are friendly, the culture is great, and the work is challenging.

Young Persons GroupThe Young Persons Group is an opportunity for the Aspire@BCH team to engage with the very young people we are aiming to help, to produce the services and resources most likely to help them.

We have worked in in partnership with University of First Age (UFA) to train young people through their Step-Up programme to become Social Action Leaders. These Social Action Leaders are leading on our Campaign Group projects to develop and deliver a project of their choice related to education, enterprise or employability. They have started planning their projects that will help to change Birmingham Children’s Hospital in some way. These include hosting an employability event for young people in care and a performing arts event which will be held here at the hospital to provide employability information to young people in an accessible way. The aim of these projects is to increase the motivation levels of young people and promote the variety of careers on offer within the NHS. We will be supporting them as they plan and deliver their projects.

We also had our very first Development Group meeting this month. The aim of the Development Group is to help Aspire@BCH to develop our resources, such as our website, our employability programmes and to assist with our events. The first meeting was an opportunity to get to meet the very young people we want to help and to ensure they are getting the support they want and need from us. Their first project will be to help develop our current Work Experience programme to ensure our young people are getting the best experience possible when they participate in the programme.

We are very excited to be working with these young people and cannot wait to see the end results! We will find out how they are getting on in later editions.

Spotlight on a Youth AmbassadorWe have been recruiting members of our staff to become Youth Ambassadors, who work with us to help introduce young people to the world of work. 70 members of staff have already become Youth Ambassadors and they are all passionate about supporting young people and show their support through assisting with work experience placements and events.

Elizabeth Adamson is one of our Youth Ambassadors and we asked her how she is finding the role.

What is your job role at Birmingham Children’s Hospital?

I am a Team Leader who manages and supports the Medical Secretarial teams in Dermatology and Neurology.

How have you supported Aspire@BCH so far?

I was recently involved in the Traineeship programme and I am currently supporting the Work Experience programme. Within my group of team leaders we took on 8 trainees and showed them how the administration teams within the Trust work mainly focusing on our Medical Secretarial teams. They helped out where they could and we really enjoyed having them around. I also did a terminology quiz and bones of the body quiz with the trainees. Some of the Trainees were successful and have been recruited into Business and Administration Apprenticeships here at the hospital.

What experience or knowledge can you offer a young person?

I do hope I can offer some knowledge and guidance to young people on how to get into work, whilst sharing my own experiences. I also want to share my vast knowledge of administration and secretarial skills.

Why did you become a Youth Ambassador? Why do you think other members of staff should get involved?

I became a Youth Ambassador for the satisfaction of helping young people and so I could share my experiences of working here at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. A nice benefit is being asked to attend the Skills Show at the NEC in November to promote NHS careers to other young people. Other staff members should get involved to encourage young people to pursue careers within the health care setting.

Supporting UsYouth Ambassadors agree to do their best to champion the Aspire@BCH Work Experience and Career programmes at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

For more information on what our Youth Ambassadors do or if you want to become a Youth Ambassador yourself, please contact us at [email protected].
