The Aspire@BCH Star Awards held in June at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre was the perfect way to celebrate the amazing achievements of both Aspire@BCH and everyone who is involved with us. ‘Aspire@BCH helped, inspired, motivated and changed me. What will

Aspire@BCH do for you?’

Aspire@BCH has had an extremely successful first year, launching some truly innovative and inspiring projects to engage with our staff, patients and young people in Birmingham.

The Aspire@BCH Star Awards held in June at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre was the perfect way to celebrate the amazing achievements of both Aspire@BCH and everyone who is involved with us. We received over 140 awards nominations, which provided a real challenge to the panel who found it tremendously difficult to judge and select the winners of each category! This in itself really reflects the amazing contribution our young people and staff make in providing ‘opportunities without limits’.

Every nomination we received demonstrated the fantastic work of those nominated and the impact they have had on the people they work with. You should all feel exceptionally proud of yourselves for the difference you have made to the lives of our patients, families and young people – you truly capture our Trust Values and are role models for us all.

Our awards event was a great night and we celebrated everyone’s remarkable successes in true BCH style. It was so rewarding to see the winners collect their awards and for them to be able to share such a special moment with their friends, family and colleagues.

I would also like to say a special thank you to all of our sponsors for their support with the Awards. Also, thank you to all of the Non-Executive Directors and members of the Executive Team for presenting awards and hosting tables during the event. We couldn’t have done it all without you!

Congratulations again to everyone who was nominated and thank you for all your support.

The winner went to the Employability Programme for young people with Learning Disabilities. Several individuals were recognised for their work on this project which provides young people with learning experiences and helps them to develop key employability and living skills. These were staff from Facilities, Fundraising, Therapies, HR, Education and Learning and Calthorpe Vocational Trust. The award was a fitting tribute to all of the hard work of these individuals in giving opportunities without limits.

Finally, Theresa Nelson the Chief Officer for Workforce Development closed the night and invited all of the winners back on stage for a group photo.

There were so many worthy winners and nominees in the spotlight on the night, including staff who have been great Youth Ambassadors and gone out of their way to support young people in their departments, fantastic mentors and managers who have developed our young staff, and outstanding apprentices and graduate interns who have pushed and challenged themselves to develop both personally and professionally.

Congratulations to everyone who was shortlisted and to all of the winners! You were all very worthy of the recognitionyou received and we feel so privileged to be working alongside you!

Pre-Internship Applicant Day

On Wednesday 3 June, we held our pre-internship applicant day for students who had applied for our pre-internship programme. This programme is a chance for students from the University of Birmingham to work on a particular project in a department within Birmingham Children’s Hospital over the summer. We had lots of interest from students, and received a high number of brilliant applications. The applicant day was a great chance for the students to meet staff from the departments they were interested in and find out more about the projects they would be working on.

Departments hosting pre-interns this summer include the Aspire team, Patient Pathways, Neurosciences, Fundraising and Outpatients. We look forward to having the students working with us!

Youth Friendly Charter

We are proud to announce that we have signed up to the Youth Employment UK’s Youth Friendly Charter! YEUK is the leading campaigning and membership organisation dedicated to tackling youth unemployment in the UK. The Youth Friendly Charter encourages all UK organisations to support young people in their communities. This is because positive youth friendly behaviour helps to develop young people and ensure a workforce that can support the UK economy for the future. Our Youth Friendly Charter recognises all the work we do to support young people in getting the skills, knowledgeand experience they need to enter the world of work. So, if you are a business and are committed to supporting young people by recognising their their talent and helping with their development, then why not sign up to the Youth Friendly Charter today?

NHS Careers Day

On Wednesday 24 June we held our NHS Careers Event here with school students from Plantsbrook School and Broadway Academy.

During the day, school students went on a tour around the hospital and went around careers stands delivered by various departments across the Trust. These included Diabetes, HealthTec, Corporate Nursing, Infection Control, Therapies, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and West Midlands Ambulance Service.

The day was a good opportunity for the students to explore the wide range of career opportunities available within the NHS. We hope the day inspired them all!

‘Outstanding’ from Walsall College

Our partner Walsall College recently came to visit us to observe the quality of the assessing and training we deliver through the Vocational Centre for our Business and Administration apprenticeship qualification. All three of our assessors - Sally Carlin, Laura Bustin and Barbara Hill - were graded at an ‘outstanding’ standard. They were praised for their ‘valuable guidance’, ‘high levels of knowledge’ and ‘highly effective’ teaching.

Well done for your brilliant work!

Aimhigher West Midlands

Universities work hard to reach out to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and since the introduction of higher fees must submit an Access Agreement to OFFA, the government watchdog, detailing what they will do to ensure concerns about the costs of higher education do not deter students from less well-off backgrounds. Amazingly, England’s universities will invest £735 million this year alone in their work to attract, retain and support disadvantaged students!

Much of this work is focused on students in 6th form or college, and those entering university needing support in the form of bursaries or scholarships. But an increasing focus is on younger students, to inspire them as they progress through their education, motivate them to succeed and give them opportunities to see that university and the professions could be “for people like me”. Many universities feel this long-term work is best done together, and Aimhigher West Midlands is one of the country’s leading examples of collaborative outreach. 12 of the West Midlands’ universities work together to help schools, colleges, careers advisers, parents and young people get involved in a wide range of activities, including university summer schools, masterclasses, mentoring schemes and other outreach activities.

Aimhigher also hosts a free annual conference, this year on July 8th at the University of Birmingham. This will explore the implications of the general election for the future of higher education, the role of the National Careers Service, developments in the future of health careers, and the latest news from UCAS and the Student Loans Company. It is a great way for professionals involved in advising students aged 11 to 18 keep abreast of a fast changing agenda, and the programme and on-line booking survey can be accessed at www.aimhigherwm.ac.uk/conference/2015

The Social Mobility Foundation

The Social Mobility Foundation aims to improve social mobility for young people with high academic ability who are eligible for free school meals or are in the first generation of their family to attend university. Now in our tenth year, we have grown from one to three offices, for seven target cities across the country. We aim to provide an infrastructure of support and guidance to students who would otherwise be unable to access this type of help regardless of where they are in the UK.

Our Aspiring Professionals Programme comprises of four aspects of support:• A mentor to link students with a professional in the sector they hope to go into;• University application advice;• Work placement opportunities;• Professional development and career support.

The number of students we are supporting in Birmingham has been steadily increasing, with over 120 who are now in Year 12. We will be opening our third regional office in Birmingham next year.

If you are a professional and are considering offering work placements to young people, then we can link you up with a local young person passionate about following a career in your industry. Hosting an SMF student for a one-week work placement will help support young people in your community and can help give you a competitive edge when identifying the brightest new recruits.

If you want to find out any more information or get involved in any of our programmes, please contact [email protected], or call the SMF on 0207 183 1189.

You can also visit us at www.socialmobility.org.uk or follow us on Twitter at @SocialMobilityF.

Our ProjectsUpRising Training Sessions

We are working in partnership with UpRising on an exciting new project. We have been holding training sessions for a group of young people including interns, apprentices, pre-interns and members of the Young Person’s Development Group to develop an impact wheel. An impact wheel is a coaching tool that will help young people make changes by providing them with a clear picture of the journey to success, enabling them to take manageable steps and plot their progress along the way.

At the end of the project, we will have a usable tool which will be used as part of all Aspire’s services, such as the apprenticeship and internship programmes.

As well as working on the project, the training sessions focus on giving the young people crucial employability skills such as leadership, project management, team work and time management.

We can’t wait to see the final result! E-Mentoring update

The first cohort of mentees on our e-mentoring programme has been a great success, with all mentees making progress. Each mentee has experienced an increase in a variety of skills including confidence, communication skills, research skills and motivation. All of our mentees have enjoyed the experience and felt it has helped them with their personal and professional development. The next cohort will begin in September.

Purple Balloon Scheme

We have recently launched our Purple Balloon Scheme. This scheme will allow us to work closely with schools, finding out how we can support pupils with their employability needs and to raise the awareness of career opportunities in the NHS to pupils. We will do this by giving schools signed up the scheme priority access to our services, including e-mentoring, our own careers events and internal career fairs. In return, schools signed up the scheme make a commitment to fundraise for BCH. We already have a number of schools signed up the scheme, so if you are a school and you want to work in partnership with us, why not sign up to the scheme today? To find out more, please email [email protected]

September 2014 marked the beginning of our new graduate intern cohort. We have had 19 graduate interns with us all working in various departments including Pharmacy, Education and Learning, Cardiology and Dermatology.

The internships finish in August and we are sad to be saying goodbye to them, although we do have some staying with us in departments such as Staff Experience, Patient Pathways and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Some of the other interns have gone on to secure positions at other Trusts, organisations and on the NHS Graduate Scheme.

Here is what some of our interns said about their time here at BCH:

“I really enjoyed Challenge Week and the opportunity to work with other interns and apprentices on the Big Hoot trail!”

“It’s been a fantastic experience working with different teams across the hospital on lots of different projects and I’ve met some really inspirational people. I really enjoyed my time on the internship and I’m now a permanent member of the Patient Pathways team, hoping to stay at BCH for bit longer!”

“I have really loved being part of the intern group and a personal highlight was making the video for the intern Challenge Week and then going onto win!”

“My favourite part of the internship has been the opportunity to work with and learn from so many new people, who without this opportunity, I would probably never have met.”

We wish them all the best with their futures and it’s been a fantastic experience working with them and watching them develop.

The Big HootThe Big Hoot lands in Birmingham from 20 July - 28 September with ‘parliaments’ of beautifully created owls taking up perches across the city. Presented by Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Wild in Art, in association with Presenting Partners LDC and Fort Dunlop, this ‘totally owlsome’ event will be the city’s biggest ever participatory art event - a spectacular visual feast for everyone to enjoy.

With sponsorship from local businesses and organisations, the trail will feature around 90 owl sculptures decorated by artists from Birmingham and beyond.

There will be cartoon owls; night owls; wise owls; celebrity owls; jewellery owls; the eponymous hero from the ‘Owl and the Pussycat’; owls that have travelled a long way to join the fun - from the pyramids of Egypt, Amazonian Rainforests and outer space; owls that celebrate Birmingham’s landmark architecture, history, people, places and multiculturalism and much more…

Look out for 125 smaller ‘owlet’ sculptures crafted by children from 118 schools, as part of The Little Hoot, a programme supported by The Schools of King Edward VI in Birmingham. The owlets will be on display from 8 July - 28 September in clusters around the city.

At the end of The Big Hoot’s run, the large owls will be flying off to new hollows, after being auctioned to raise significant funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Young people from Birmingham Children’s Hospital came up with the concept for an app to use along the trail as part of their Challenge Week in March 2015. Don’t forget to download it!
