By winning this award Merryn made it two top awards in a row for Tupton Hall students after Brandon Greenfield also won the award during the last YES! Project earlier in the year. The Guest Speaker was Mrs. Carol Hull, formerAssistant Head, who has a long association withthe VI Form. Local MP Ms. Natascha Engel wasour special guest. Students received their A Levelcertificates and special prizes were awarded byMiss Charlotte Evans, Head of VI Form:Old Students’ Prize – Achievement and Service –Robert Clay and Jessica Wragg Les Spriggs Memorial Prize – Adam BaxterBoth sponsored by The Rotary Club of Clay Cross.Ian Forsyth Prize – Daniel FoxSt. Lawrence Prize – Lauren Atack Sponsored by St. Lawrence ChurchJonathan Rhodes Memorial Prize – Daniel AshmoreMalcolm Smith Prize – Lucie HartlandMiss Downie Prize – Laura HopkinsonGovernors’ Award – Adam Hadfield

Mrs Hull congratulated the students on their achievements and advised them todisregard press comments that A levels were getting easier.Mr Cook drew a contrast between access to higher education in 2009 and2010. In 2010 only 65% of the students gained university places. Many studentsare re-applying this year including Adam Baxter (3 A*s, 1 A and 1 B), who nowholds an unconditional offer from Oxford University.Mr Cook drew a contrast between access to higher education in 2009 and2010, the A Level results in each year were comparable but 85% of the 2009students had their places confirmed within two hours. The story was verydifferent in 2010 with only 65% of the students gaining university places and ittook nine days to secure all of these places. Many students with good and evenexcellent results missed out on places and are re-applying this year. Thisincludes Adam Baxter who gained 3 A*s, 1 A and 1 B. We are please to reportthat he now holds an unconditional offer from Oxford University to readPhilosophy, Politics and Economics. In closing he drew attention to a recentarticle in the Daily Telegraph which stated that 1 in 3 applicants were likely tomiss out on a university place this year.Ms Engel said how much she had enjoyed her contact with the students throughschool visits including a Question time style debate. She then recounted her ownexperience of coming out of university at the height of the recession in the early1990s. She advised students to be positive about the future saying that with adetermined approach they could go into successful careers.

Tupton Hall held two Y11 EnterpriseDays recently, which were a greatsuccess! All year 11 students took part inactivities that encouraged them to workas part of a team, take risks, makedecisions as well as trying to developtheir financial capabilities. These arekey characteristics of successfulentrepreneurs. The events were run by 'Bright Futures'who received rave reviews from thestudents. The main focus of theirenjoyment was the afternoon sessionwhere they looked at the design of themakarapa hat that was created for theWorld Cup in South Africa and appliedthe same principles of design to creatinga similar hat for the London 2012Olympics. Year 10 students had theiropportunity to become moreenterprising. ‘Bright Futures’ introduceda range of topics from famousentrepreneurs and the skills they need tobe successful to less well knownindividuals who were making their ownsmall mark on the business world. Onesuch inspiration was a young man wholoves snowboarding and developed hisown business.

Year 13 Italian Job

At the end of October a group of Year 13 students took partin the Geography field trip to Sorrento in Italy. The aim ofthe trip was to study the cause, effects and management oftectonic landscapes. Students stayed at a hotel in thebeautiful town of Sorrento on the Amalfi coast. The tripinvolved visits to the Roman towns of Pompeii andHerculaneum, which were engulfed by volcanic ash the lasttime Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, and the island ofCapri. Highlights of the trip included climbing the slopes ofMount Vesuvius, observing the steaming, bubbling sulphuricpools at Solfatara’s volcanic fields, playing football in thepiazza in Naples and sampling the fantastic Italian ice cream! The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part and willno doubt enrich the understanding of students in preparationfor the A2 Unit 4 examination in June.Mrs. A. BrownActing Head of Geography

At the end of September the Year 11 Geographers took part in a Rivers Study at Burbage Brook in the Peak District. As well as getting out in the fresh air, and getting our feet wet, the trip helped students’ understanding of riverlandscapes and processes. We had a go at fieldwork techniques such as field-sketching, measuring the river’svelocity, width and depth, and comparing the upper and middle course of the river. The fieldtrip introduced keyconcepts and built students’ confidence. Now they are even more prepared to tackle the examination, especiallyinterpreting questions about the physical environment. Geography... brought to life!
