ASPIRE and SOAR

TERM 4 ISSUE 16

Our 2013 Sports Day was a great event. All of our students lived by our school values, tried their best, played collaboratively and had a ton of fun. Thank you to all of our parents and friends that came along and enjoyed the day. Most importantly the weather was perfect! Thanks once again to Terry Ahern for his great organising of Sports Day. Thank you to all staff members for their effort to ensure the success of Sports Day. And the winners are…. The competition on sports day has never been so close throughout the day. Rarely was there more than 10 points dividing the four teams. But, at the end of the day our brand new trophies were presented to –

BLUE 403 RED 384 YELLOW 359 GREEN 352

For everyone attending Sports Day you would have seen Marina Lekkas (U6 class teacher) carted away to hospital by ambulance. Marina was attempting to ensure a ‘fair start’ to her class’s tug of war competition by placing her foot on the rope. Unfortunately the students enthusiastically started pulling before Marina moved her foot meaning she was flung back onto the ground.

Marina spent the first few days of the holidays in the

Queen Elizabeth Hospital whilst a plate was inserted into

her arm to secure the broken bones. She is currently in

still a bit of pain and will be away from school for another

couple of weeks. It wasn’t quite the hotel accommodation

Marina had been planning for the holidays.

Once some improvements have been made to the system, we will be ready to distribute our newsletters electronically to the KPPS community along with other notes and updates.

This term we have emailed all KPPS parents about the following topics: Gastro outbreak PJ Day Class placement letters If you have not received these emails then it means we do not have an up-to-date email address for your

family. Please send an updated email address to :

A note will be sent home next week with any student in Years 2-5 interested in learning a stringed instrument in 2014. An Expression of Interest form will be required by all interested students. Numbers assist in determining 2014 funding. New students will participate in an audition lesson early in term one. Lessons are provided by a DECD Instrumental Music teacher. Costs will be $30 per term for the hire and maintenance of the instrument. Students can choose to learn to play cello, violin or viola.

Tanya Welsh provides piano and flute lessons for students at the school. She has a few vacancies available for next year. If your child is interested in lessons, please contact Tania on: 0411 772 892 to check times available and cost.

Letters were distributed Tuesday October 22nd requesting parent feedback for 2014 classes.

Kidman Celebrates

2013 The planning has begun for our massive end of year celebration to be held at the Family Centre on Frederick Rd, Seaton, at 7pm on Wednesday December 11 th. Details about tickets will be sent home soon. Put the date in your diary now and support our students as they display their special talents and performing arts skills. All classes will perform on the night. Kidman Celebrates is a fun night for our community to celebrate the end of the school year and for students to; show what they have learnt as a part of our arts program, develop their confidence all in front of a supportive and appreciative audience. Once again, tickets will be $5 with a limited amount available.

Bon Jovi will be performing at Football Park on the same night traffic might be a little more congested on the night.

An order form for the Year 7 Polo tops 2014 was sent home earlier this week with all year 6 students. A copy can also be downloaded from our website at:

http://www.kidmanpkps.sa.edu.au/excursions.htm

Year 7 polo tops cost $38.00. All orders must be returned

by Friday 1st November and no late orders accepted.

These tops are only available by placing an order, we do

not keep stock in the Uniform Shop.

The Josiah Mitton Prize is offered to the most outstanding or best "all round" student in all primary and high schools in the City of Charles Sturt.

Josiah Mitton was one of the first elected Councillors of the Corporation of the Town of Hindmarsh and its third Mayor (1878-1880). He participated actively in local affairs and in the Hindmarsh Institute Library, which was formed between 1852 and 1855. On his death a bequest of over 50 Pounds was presented to the library to set up a library scholarship for school children. The Josiah Mitton Prize was initially presented annually to a student from each school in the Hindmarsh area to perpetuate the memory of the Josiah Mitton Scholarship to the Hindmarsh District Library and Mechanics Institute.

When libraries became a free service the scholarship became irrelevant and an annual book prize was introduced and has been awarded annually by the City of Charles Sturt ever since.

Award recipients will receive an invitation to attend the Mayoral Make a Book and Josiah Mitton award night Thursday 7 November 2013.

Our school has nominated Matilda (Tilly) Krywanio. Tilly has represented our school in many ways- Japanese Quiz Day, Hiragana Contests, Debating, Chess and Choir. She also plays netball for the school team. Tilly has successfully taken part in the Australian Maths Challenge, and ICAS tests of Spelling, Maths and Computing. Outside of school she extends her talents with playing the piano and dancing with Henley Beach Dance Group.

When she is not striving for excellence in all subject areas, Tilly looks for ways to support our school. Her peers elected her as a Student Leader and she has taken on the responsibility as Open Day tour guide, supporting Kidman-a-thon and Discoes, as well as, hosting and judging in Kidman’s Got Talent. Committees have included fund raising, ICT Student Mentor program, School Magazine and Trees for

Life.

Tilly volunteers in the school canteen and has completed both the Premier Reading and Premier Be Active Challenges.

An excellent role model and worthy Josiah Mitton recipient!

BRANDON’S VAN

DON’T FORGET THE CONCERT FOR BRANDON is on this Sunday 27th October 2013. Tickets are

available from the front office, until first thing Friday morning.

Please return Brandon’s Van raffle tickets to school by Friday 25th October (this week) to be able to go

into the draw on Sunday.

A big Thankyou to our school community, so far we have raised $3,216.30!! The raffle has raised

1366.40, Ticket sales $420, Pyjama Day $805.60 and $624.30 in donations.

PYJAMA DAY

On the 18th of October, people all around the Kidman Park

Community hopped out of bed in the morning and didn’t get dressed

for school because it was a pyjama day fundraiser to raise money for

Brandon’s Van.

There were a lot of people in their pyjamas and their onesie’s. Even

some of the teachers didn’t get dressed in the morning!

It was a fun day and everyone who was brave enough to show off

their pj’s joined in and there were heaps of photos to remind

everyone of pyjama day.

In total the Kidman Park Community raised $805.60 for Brandon’s Van

and we would like to think that there will be fundraisers like this to raise

money for Brandon’s Van in the future.

without a hitch. A big turnout of parents and family added to

Teresa Marshall’s P2 who set up a truck load of gear all

week.

PE in Term 4

I offer 45 minute sessions once a week with most of our R-5

classes this term, often in 3 week blocks to reinforce individu-

al sport skills.

My focus for the final assessment—hitting/striking, will be

‘stick’ skills and sports.

A lock of teeball will be given to all R-5s with modified games

for our R-2s.

Next, lacrosse will be introduced to our year 3-5s using our

new set of equipment and R-2s will enjo9y some soft hockey

using ‘fat’ sticks and big balls.

As the weather heats up, indoor ‘striking’ activities will in-

clude indoor hockey and bran ball for our 3-5s and the al-

ways popular scooter hockey for our R-2s.

Twin towers, gaga ball and Oscar’s garbage bin will be re-

vived as ever popular warm up activities.

I’m looking forward to another fun, active term.

SPORTS RESULTS

PE NIT in Term 4

こんにちはKonnichiwa, Welcome back to term 4, it’s sure to be busy so I hope you are refreshed from the holidays. This week all classes have been

starting to talk about 日本のたべも

のNihon no tabemono – Japanese Food. We are

looking at Obento and other well-known, popular Japanese dishes. We may get to try some cooking of our own before the end of the year! Have you ever eaten Japanese food? Which is your favourite? For the rest of the term the students from Year 3 to 7 will

be continuing their ひらがなhiragana learning from term 3.

They are だ ん だ んdandan

(gradually) becoming very proficient at recognising the 46 symbols and are starting to read words – very exciting!

Students in P3 have received their first letter from Warren the Wombat. He’s living in Kamaishi, Iwate, Japan (try to find it on a map)! Our new friend Baikinman

has also arrived and has started adventures visiting homes of students. We will take photos of his adventures then write a class journal to go with the photos. All in simple Japanese! What a fun way to make use of our language skills! Students in the Early Years will

learn more about Japanese culture through Autumn talk – foods, activities and customs, with all language woven through this topic. You should see some displays of this appearing near our room soon! Please pop in and see me if you want to find out more about this term’s work, our Japanese programme, second language learning or your child’s progress. I look forward to meeting some of you during the term.
