Dear AVSC Families,

I am very excited to share the program guide for winter 2018-2019! Whether you are a returning athlete or new to our community, we are eager to welcome you for a great season. We look forward to working together to build off of last winter’s success. There were US Ski & Snowboard Team nominations, RevTour overall wins, and World Junior invites. There were also lots of first turns, first 360s, first away competitions, and an immense amount of growth at every level in between. Finally, it’s impossible to discuss 2018 without mentioning how incredibly proud we are to have been represented in PyeongChang by nine AVSC alumni in the Olympics and by twelve alumni and athletes in the Paralympics.

Moving forward, we are excited for colder weather! In the meantime, our athletes have been working hard in our summer programs, gaining air awareness on the trampolines and at Buttermilk Glacier, perfecting technique on rollerskis, and building strength in the gym. Some have travelled far afield to chase snow in New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina. Others are taking advantage of our outdoor playground by trail running and mountain biking up and down the Roaring Fork Valley. Our staff is excited to help translate that hard work to success, and have a lot of fun while doing it!

As you look through the program guide and navigate registration, please do not hesitate to reach out to the program directors with any questions. Their contact information is listed at the bottom of their respective pages.

Here’s to a great winter full of challenge, growth, success, and FUN!

Best,

Mark GodomskyExecutive Director Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club

Scholarships are available for all team programs based on need. Athletes applying for a scholarship must submit registration and scholarshipapplication by the early registration deadline (September 12th, 2018). Scholarship applications can be found online at www.teamavsc.org. A $100 - $600 deposit (dependent on program) is required to apply for a scholarship. Post-graduate athletes are not eligible for scholarships.

Aspen Skiing Company (ASC) Ski Passes are not included in the program fees. Athletes must be enrolled as participants in an AVSC program prior to purchasing a pass. Upon completion of your online registration, you will receive an email confirmation from AVSC. This confirmation is your ASC pass voucher. Paper pass vouchers are available in the AVSC Administrative Office. Bring the voucher and your child to any open ASC ticket office beginning in August to complete your pass purchase. Early bird pricing on ASC passes ends on November 16, 2018.

Parent Work Deposits (PWD) are part of all Team programs and must be paid at the time of registration. The PWD program is designed to engage our parents in what we do and give them chances to interact with our staff and athletes on a different level. Parents who work off their PWD are reimbursed up to 100% of the deposit at a rate of $15/hour. All hours will be tracked by the AVSC Office Manager and must be approved by an AVSC Director. Reimbursements will be distributed prior to July 30, 2019.

Deposits: A $100 - $600 deposit (dependent on program) will be required at registration for all participants applying for a scholarship or requesting a payment plan.

Fee payment/payment plans: Team program fees are to be paid in full prior to the first day of training, or a payment plan must be established. Payment plan installments will begin the first day of the month following your registration (or the first day of the month after a scholarship is awarded) and end on March 1st, 2019. Any deposits made will be applied against your balance due, and the installments will be spread equally through March 1st. A $50.00 processing fee (per family) will be applied in January to all payment plans (including those awarded scholarships).

Athlete Accounts: All AVSC Team participants are required to have a signed incidental policy form with a credit/debit card or eCheck on file. No exceptions. Incidental travel charges will be charged per AVSC incidental policy.

Declined Payments: A $25 fee will be assessed for any payment transaction which is declined. Your child’s participation may be suspended unless payment arrangements are made within seven (7) days.

Academic Expectations: All student athletes must maintain at least a C average in each of their classes to be able to miss school for training, travel or competition. Athletes are also expected to fulfill all requirements outlined by their teachers for work missed and attend all study halls designated by AVSC staff members.

Athletes new to AVSC may be granted early season pricing past the deadline (at the discretion of their Program Director). Program fees will be determined based on the following: Prior to January 15th - full early season price, on or after January 15th - 25% discount on early season pricing.

Refund Policy: 100% Refunds are permitted prior to the program start date. Once the program start date has passed, refunds are only available for documented medical reasons (that result in season-ending injury) or family relocation. Refunds are determined by the following: Prior to January 1 - 50%, Between January 1 and February 1 - 25%, After February 1 - No Refund. Any season pass discounted through enrollment in AVSC will be voided upon withdrawal. All refunds are subject to a $100 processing fee.

Participation: AVSC reserves the right to suspend or expel athletes who do not follow the AVSC athlete code of conduct, who cause disruptions, or who create an atmosphere that is not conducive to learning. Program fees will not be refunded and any outstanding payments will be the responsibility of the family.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but when it comes to giving 2,300 local children access to winter sports programming and providing over $1.25 million dollars in scholarships and subsidies, it truly takes a valley. Through the support of our generous donors and sponsors, Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club is able to subsidize our programs in an effort to make skiing and snowboarding affordable to all children in the Roaring Fork Valley. Please contact Miah Wheeler to learn about the many ways you can support AVSC. Miah can be reached via email at [email protected] or phone at 970.205.5102.

BILL KOCH YOUTH SKI LEAGUE (FORMERLY BASE CAMP)Bill Koch, aka “Kochie,” is America’s first cross country skier Olympic medalist (1976). He emerged from the hills around Putney, Vermont to become a World Cup Champion. In addition to his international results, Bill was well known for fun and innovation. Often referred to as the father of skate skiing, Kochie helped popularize the technique in the early 80's leading to his bronze medal in the 1982 world championships. When he was not helping create a new technique or racing in Europe, Kochie was often seen skiing though the back woods and pastures, jumping and just playing on his skis!

When he retired from world cup skiing, USSA honored Bill by forming the Bill Koch Ski League (BKL) to introduce America’s children to Nordic skiing and the joy of going fast on skis. AVSC ran this program in the 80's and early 90's. The name change from Base Camp back to Bill Koch Youth Ski League is an attempt to acknowledge Kochie and his innovative, fun-loving spirit.

Our BKL programs are fun, learn-to-ski programs geared towards children ages 5-11. The emphasis will be on fostering a love for the sport and enjoying winter in the Roaring Fork Valley. Children will develop basic motor skills invaluable to their future athletic involvement. Skills such as coordination, agility, and balance will be taught through a variety of games and activities. As children progress through the Bill Koch League programs, they will learn teamwork, sportsmanship, fair play, and other essential habits common among successful adolescents.

Most AVSC athletes, long before they were chasing their dreams in the TEAM programs, started out as a Powder Panda or Aspenaut in our recreational program. AVSC’s recreational programs were started in 1989 by Bob Beattie, Brooke Peterson, and Charif Souki. The program originally started as 'Aspen Supports Kids’ and was later renamed 'Base Camp.’

We are returning to the program’s original name, ‘Aspen Supports Kids,’ in memory and honor of Bob Beattie, a dear friend to AVSC who passed away in the spring of 2018. While the program has grown from 25 kids to 1,600 since the time it was started nearly 30 years ago, the mission has remained the same: accessibility to skiing and snowboarding for local youth. Bob wanted every child to experience skiing regardless of his or her family's financial circumstance. He cared deeply about the success of AVSC and about each and every child in the program.

Bob is known globally in the ski community and beyond as a visionary and pioneer. He was on the founding team for the World Cup and the US Ski Team, he started the World Pro Skiing Tour, and he had an incredibly successful career commentating for various outlets, including ABC Sports and ESPN.

We will miss Bob tremendously, but his legacy and spirit will live on at AVSC through every child that has learned (or will learn) to ski as a result of his passion and dedication!

Bob on his favorite night of the year, Equipment Night, when over 400

athletes receive equipment to use for the season, free of charge, from Four Mountain Sports and Gorsuch. Bob is

pictured here with a young athlete picking up her equipment at Gorsuch

in December 2017.
