Aspen Corporation Teams for Success in Golf Inc.’s Renovation of the Year
Daniels, W.Va.— Hudson National Valley Golf Course, located in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., was awarded First Place for Golf Inc.’s Renovation of the Year in the category for projects under $1 million. Daniels, W.Va.-based Aspen Corporation was the golf contractor for the project, which was completed in July 2010. Hudson National Golf Club opened in June of 1996 and was designed by celebrated architect Tom Fazio. “Hudson National is known for its spectacular Hudson River views,” says Aspen president Donnie Adkins. “Mr. Fazio took a rugged piece of property and turned it into a beautiful golf course. In fact, Hudson National’s hole #16 is featured on the cover of Fazio’s Golf Course Designs book. “ In March, 2010, Hudson National began a renovation project on its bunkers, which visually and strategically are some of its greatest assets. “The bunker style featured high visual impact, but also required high levels of maintenance,” says Adkins. A total of 80 bunkers were rebuilt with a total square footage around 67,500. Six new bunkers were added for another 10,000 square feet. The new bunkers retain their visual impact while becoming more maintenance-friendly. And club members were able to enjoy their 2010 season during construction, which is no small feat. Only three holes were closed at a time. Golf Course Superintendent Chris Smith says Aspen went above and beyond in keeping disruption to a minimum. “We stayed open the whole time and didn’t have too many holes exposed to construction at one time. There was very little disruption to our members and the golf course was well-cared for.”

We are exceptionally pleased with the bunkers and equally pleased with the manner in which the work was done. We had zero interruptions for our members, and no complaints!” In addition to the Golf Inc. award, another measure of success comes with Hudson National’s inclusion in the 2011‐2012 Golf Digest Top 100 Golf Courses in America; in fact, it moved up in the rankings from 94 to 83. “This was one of the finest pools of entrants since the competition started in 2004,” said Jack Crittenden, Editor In Chief of Golf Inc. magazine. “All of the honorees were rated by the judges as outstanding quality.” Judges were Dr. Michael Hurdzan with Hurdzan‐Fry Environmental Golf Design, Oscar Rodriguez, Vice President Construction Manager with The Weitz Company, and Jim Bellington, Senior Vice President of Development Services with Troon Golf. Aspen Corporation has produced other award‐winning work over the last several years, including four Golf Course Industry Builders Excellence Awards for its work nationwide. Another Aspen project, Pikewood National Golf Course in Morgantown, W.Va., was named Best New Private Golf Course for 2009 by Golf Digest. Aspen has also completed work on several golf courses that regularly host PGA events, including Firestone South and The Greenbrier’s Old White course.
