    Team Assignment: Project Requirements (PR)

Due date: must be submitted electronically by 12:10 p.m. in Week 6 (Oct 6-10) on your

    tutorial day.

Purpose: Write a document that will serve as a contract between you and your client.

The document must give a complete solution-independent engineering definition of the

project for which you will be designing a solution. In industry this document serves as

protection against scope creep where your client keeps adding required features, but not

giving you more resources (money, time, etc.). The document must include value- added

information beyond that in the client statement, including information gathered from

sources other than your client and your own critical thinking on the project (see figure 1).

Figure 1: Moving from Client Statement to Project Requirements [Designing Engineers, Module 9:Introduction to Requirements]

    A. Required content list

Only one assignment is required per team. Each assignment must include:- Cover Page (template posted in the Assignment Folder on Blackboard)- Executive Summary (start on new page after cover page)1.0 Project Requirements

    B. To wri te your assignment (rough and final drafts)

All assignments in APS111mustbe both written (i.e., drafted and revised)andsubmit ted online. Other forms of submissions, hardcopy or digital, will not be accepted.

Any variance from this process will result in an incomplete submission and, thus, latepenalties.

Write your PR assignment in a single Google Doc fi leshared not only with yourteam, but also with both your TA and CI. The required content for the PR must besubmitted to your TA as a single shared Google Doc document beforethe assignmentdeadline.Only one assignment is required and allowed per team.

    I. Create this file by opening the link to the cover page posted in Blackboard. Youwill not be able to edit this file.

II. Under File select Make a Copy to make a copy in your home Google Drivefolder for which you are the owner and can edit.

    III. Rename this file using this strictnaming scheme:Tut## - Team ## - Team Leader Name - PR - DraftI.E. Tut10 - Team 03 - Jason Bazylak - PR - Draft

IV. Share this file with your TA and CI and give them permission to edit (CanEdit).

    Format:

No more than 1600 wordsexcluding the Cover Page, Executive Summary,Reference List, Appendices, and Research Worksheets. Any words beyond thelimit will be crossed out and will not be considered as part of the document.

Formatting must follow Document Style Requirements in the Course Packageposted on Blackboard.

All rough and final drafts of your assignment must be written in a single Googledoc file so TAs can see your revisions! (I.E. Do not write your PR offline andupload it.)

Late Penalty: Standard late penalties apply. See the syllabus for details.

    C. Required content description

    Cover Page (template posted)

All fields MUST be filled in: project title, date, client information, and names of all teammembers in full, including both first and last names and student numbers. Ensure that allnames are spelled correctly, including Client organization, Client contact person, TA andCommunication Instructor. Use the cover page template provided.

Note: It is not possible in Google Docs to remove a specific page from the automaticpage number tool. Therefore you will not be penalized for having a page number on yourCover Page.

    1.4. Objectives

These may be derived from the client, from research, or from your own analysis. Theseobjectives must be measurable and useful for comparing proposed designs againstlater. The measurability should be demonstrated by indicating a credible goal. You mayrefine these further in the Conceptual Design Specification.

1.5. ConstraintsThese may be derived from the client, from research, or from your own analysis. Theseconstraints must be measurable and useful for eliminating proposed designs. Themeasurability should be demonstrated by indicating a credible limit. You may refinethese further in the Conceptual Design Specification.

    1.6. Service Environment

The service environment describes the location conditions where the design will operate. It is NOT tobe written from the point of view of the design at this point. (Tip: dontmention the design here at all.)The service environment should consider:

Physical environment Such as range of temperature, pressure range, wind velocity, rain and salt

spray, humidity, dirt and dust, corrosive environments, shock loading, vibration,

    and noise level.

May also acknowledge other elements that may be present or active in the

users environment, including (but not limited to) buildings or machinery.

    Living things

Organisms that may interact with the design, or need to be considered when developingthe design.

May be animals, microbes, or plants. If human, you may identify factors such asculture, age, language, physical attributes, and education.

May be malevolent beings in the service environment - you need to identify

these in addition to users, other people, and other living beings that might have

a positive or neutral interaction with your design.

    Virtual environment

Any virtual systems that may exist within the physical environment, such as thepresence of Wi-Fi or a cellular network, or the operating system for a computer.

    2.0 Future Work

Summarize the currentproject status and define the path forwardfocusing on what thereader may expect from the project. It may include:

Actions the client has been asked to take

Actions the client can expect the project team to take

3.0 Reference ListAll sources you refer to in your PR (except the client statement, lectures and textbook)must be cited using IEEE format and put in a reference list

It is an academic offence to represent the ideas of others as your own, that is, tocommit plagiarism. Students who are caught plagiarising the work of others, will berequired to attend a meeting with a representative of the First Year Chair and will besubject to sanctions that may include a zero on the assignment or worse. In order toensure that you are properly identifying your sources, you must follow BOTH of thefollowing two steps.

    1) In the body of your report or other assignment, wherever you have used

information in any form (including graphics) from anyone other than yourself, or

ideas that are not your own, you must identify the source with an in-text citation,

which is a number in a square bracket, e.g. [5].

    2) At the end of your document, list all cited sources in a Reference list using IEEE

referencing standards. The IEEE referencing standard can be found at:

    http://www.ieee.org/documents/ieeecitationref.pdf.Only IEEE referencing is

permitted in this course and it must be followed exactly.

Warning: If you have taken someones idea, AND their exact words [written ororal], you must indicate that these are not your words. This can be done withquotation marks (-) if the text is short or by indenting and italicizing (blockquote) if the text is longer.

A full explanation of how to cite a source can be found in Document StyleRequirements in Course Documents on Blackboard. If you do not document yoursources properly, you will face a charge of academic misconduct. If you are unsure howto properly cite a reference, ask your CI, TA, or another member of the ESP teachingteam.

    4.0 Appendices

All appendices must be clearly labeled e.g. Appendix F: Drawings of Alternate Designs

and referred to in the body of the report. Introduce each appendix with a shortexplanation of the materials relevance. Material in an appendix is considered optionalfor the reader and will be read only if they require additional clarification. Materialintegral to understanding the document needs to be in the body.

Sources for all material included in appendices must be documented in the ReferenceList with an internal (in-text) citation located in the body of the report where the appendixmaterial is mentioned.

    5.0 Research Worksheet (template posted)

One research worksheet per assignment per student.

Research worksheets on the same reference you have previously submitted, or ateam member has previously or is currently submitting, is unacceptable.

    D. Submitt ing

To officially submityour completed assignment for marking, follow the two-partprocedure outlined previously in the PSQ instructions. If your Google Docs or Turnitinsubmissions are late, standard late penalties apply. NOTE: editing your assignmentafter renaming the file is considered an academic offence.
