Ourgoalistotrytobringvaluetoourmembers,andtobuildasupportivecommunityofphotographers.ASMPisandhasbeenagreatadvocateforprofessionalphotographersovertheyears.TheresourcesASMPhasprovidedonbusinesspracticesandcopyrightissueshavebeenin-valuableformeinmythirtyyearsasaadvertisingphotographer.Thechallengestotoday’spho-tographerrequirecommunitymorethanever.Theknowledgebaserequiredtounderstanddigitalcaptureandpostproductionisahugechallenge.Theadventofnewsoftware,operatingsystems,newhardwareareconstanttests.Onecan’tgoitaloneanymore.Theeverchanginginternet,andtheneedtostaycurrentonone’swebsiterequirecommunitytostayabreast.Thenewchal-lengesofsocialmediaareanotherfrontierthattoday’sphotographerneedssupportwith.
OurnewteamisexcitedtofindwaystohelpphotographersfromallofNewMexicobuildcommunityandsupporteachothertomeetthechallengesweface.Welookforwardtohearingfrommembersabouthowwecanbetterservetheirneedsandbringvaluetothem.

Formostofmyprofessional life as aphotographer I
havebeen immersed inthe impersonalandobjective
requirementsofcommercialphotography.Butbecause
Iwastrainedintheclassicgenreofphoto-journalism
withanemphasisoncompositionandelementswithin
aphotographthatevokefeelingandemotion,Ifound
thatmycommercialworkbecameincreasinglylessful-
filling.RecentlyIbegantofeelaneverstrongerdesire
topursuepersonalprojects,oneswhichwouldallow
metoexperimentwiththekindofimagerythatorigi-
nallyinspiredme.Andthus,CubaStreet.
MygoalwiththeCubaStreetserieswastocreatepho-
tographsthatconveyedtheemotion,thefeeling,and
therealityofwhattheCubaexperiencemeanttome,a
visitor,anoutsider.Ideliberatelychosenottoromanti-
cizeCubawithcolorandselectivesubjectmatterthat
skewedtherealityofhardshipandstrugglethatisto-
day’sCuba.IfoundthatinblackandwhiteIcouldmore
effectivelycaptureaglimpseofCubanlifeandrecord
thestrongspiritthatdefinestheCubanpeople.
Thiscollectionofimageswasmadewithcompassion
andaffectionforthepeopleandthecountry,and,as
muchasaphotographcan,theyreflecttheemotions
myvisitsengenderedwithinmeforthislovelyisland,

banContemporaryFineArtPhotographers.Thegoalofthe
researchistoportraytheartists’livingandworkenviron-
ments, their subject matter, the methodology, processes,
and techniquesused tocreate theirartwork, and togain
insightintowhatdrivestheirpassionandvision.Anaccom-
panyingphotoessaywillbeproducedupontheproject’s
completion.
The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs has of-
fered to help disseminate the results of the research to
thepublic.The informationobtained fromtheproject is
intendedtobepublishedinfineartandprofessionalmedia
andalsopresentedthroughlecturesandprogramsinvari-
ousacademicsettings,museums,andotherpubliccultural
institutions.

based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. Assisting with

and2010.Yetitreallyismorethanthat,muchmore…..ForBonanno’sskillfuluseofhislenstakes
usdeeplyintothestrangeyetfamiliarambienceofCubanculture,bringingusintothisunexpected
groundofsharedhumanexperience.ItisapparentthatBonanno’seyeisveryhumaneandclear.We
arealternatelyentrancedbythefrozen-in-timequalityoftheCubanenvironment,andtouchedbythe
implicitdignityandgraceofhissubjects.Itisthisindefinablequalityofgracewhichpermeatesthese
images–thestreet-sweeperpeersbenignlyintothecamera,withagentleinquisitivenessthatreaches
usthroughthepage.Itwaslastyear,anditcouldhavebeen100yearsago.Anoldmansmokesacigar
inhishumblecountryshack,abeautifulwomanisfussedoverinthestreet,ayoungboylooksatuswith
agazebothinnocentandknowing.Whoarethesepeople?Andthosestreets….crumblingbuildings,
ancientcarslostintimepast–whatisthisatestamentof?Isittheenduringcapacityforsurvivaland
hope,thatbreaksoutspontaneouslyinatempoofmusicandlaughterdancingthroughtheseimages?
Thereismuchofmortalityhere,yetsomanyoftheseimages,orshouldIsaygestures…..?aresimply,
touseanontechnicalphrase–marvelous–thechildrenandyoungmenplayinginthestreets,aman
stretchingdowntotouchtheearth,threemengazingdirectlyatthisGringoAmericanoPhotographer,
ahauntinglyvacantmissionschoolroom,alivingdioramaofbuildingslikeasepiafantasy.Webecome
bothwitnessandvicariousparticipanttothisvibrantlifelivedsoopenlyintheseCubanstreets–the
happyjoyofatumultuoussportscelebration,childrendressedupasmagicaldancers,anoldwoman
sittingoutsideinherchair–thesearetableauxthatlookimpossiblystaged,butarenot.Whatdothese
peoplesee?Wegazethroughthesephotosandthroughamysteriousprocessoftropicalalchemywe
areabletoseewhatisunseenandhearwhatisunspoken….Openingtotheseimagesallowsthepoi-
gnantdreamsofCubatoenterdeeplyintous,agiftofunexpectedmagic.WeexperienceourCuban
brothersandsistersandnowwecansay–“Yes….Iknowyou.”InthewordsofTheMayan….“Youare
anothermyself.”ItisthismysteriousgazeimplicitinBonanno’simagesthatremaininourawareness
longafterwehaveclosedtheportfolio.Inourdreamsahorse-drawncartapproachesus,awoman
smilesenigmaticallyfromherbalconyoverthecaféSantoDomingo,theoldcompadrepuffsonhis
cigar–theyarehearingtherattlingofawheezy57Chevyshatteringthesomnolentstreet…..perhaps
theyarethinkingofloverswalkingalongtheMalecon,thesoundoftheoceanincounterpointtothe
softsighingofthewind……nexttime…...nextyear……maybe……Thereisnofutureinthisdream,
onlytheeternalNOW,frozeninplaceunderthebakingCubansun.
