ASK ANYONE AT OUR COMPANY, ASK ANY ARGON 18 RIDER WHAT OUR RIDE IS ALL ABOUT,

AND THEY’LL TELL YOU THAT OUR BIKES ARE ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY. ANYTHING BUT

ORDINARY, BECAUSE BEFORE WE EVEN PUT PEN TO PAPER, WE START WITH AN IDEA THAT

HAS DRIVEN US SINCE DAY ONE. AND THAT IDEA IS TO SHATTER ALL PERCEPTIONS OF WHAT

A BICYCLE SHOULD BE, AND FOCUS ON WHAT A BICYCLE COULD BE. IT’S AN IDEA THAT’S

BUILT INTO EVERYTHING WE DO. EVERYTHING IS ABOUT PERFORMANCE. EVERYTHING IS

our nameOnce most riders get over the insane performance of an Argon 18 bicycle, one of the most frequent questions we get is this: Why Argon 18? Well, Argon is one of the rare gases used to weld our bike frames back in the day. And 18, well, that’s the atomic number of Argon on the periodic table. Put them together and you get Argon 18. If you want to go even further, you could say that we’re making a really clever parallel between a rare gas and rare performance. But we’ll let you come to that conclusion yourself.

our history

Our story began in Montreal in 2000. It began with a cyclist. Not just any cyclist, but Canadian Olympic cyclist and 3-time Canadian Champion, Gervais Rioux. Now ordinarily the story would end there. Man cycles. Man wins competitions the world over. Man cycles with the Canadian Olympic team. Man is satisfied with his success, and hangs up his medals. But not Gervais, who was always about looking for the next moment, the next opportunity to break away. And that breakaway was to form his own bike company: Argon 18. Almost 20 years later, Argon 18 has risen through the ranks to become one of the world’s premiere racing bikes. But we’re not stopping there. As you will see in this catalog, every single year Argon 18 leads the way with new innovations designed to make history, again and again.

LOREM IPSUM

LOREM IPSUM

OUR CARBON LAY-UPS Let’s keep things simple. Argon 18 builds performance bikes; yes, that’s what we do. And although there are different levels of performance, we have narrowed it down to three: performance, high performance and pro performance. Each of these levels has requisites when it comes to the choice of carbon lay-up, and, furthermore, each bike category has special requisites.

A high performance gravel bike demands a different carbon lay-up than a high performance triathlon or road race bike. Our carbon lay-up for a Gallium Pro has to match the demands and expectations of an Astana Pro team racer who will spend long hours on the saddle every day. The same thinking applies to our Electron Pro which needs a totally different carbon lay-up that will suit the requisites of a pro performance track bike.

In other words even though we have three levels of carbon lay-ups that match our levels of performance, the way we use them will differ from one frame to another in each of our categories because every single model bike is different from the others and has to perform at the very top of its class.

<CFD (COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS) In the design process, all of our bikes are subjected to extensive CFD testing. This technique uses computers to simulate the flow of liquids/gases involved in the aerodynamic design of bikes. It helps us understand and minimize drag on frames enabling us to design more aerodynamically efficient bikes. CFD also helps us reduce the need for wind tunnel testing.

A-CLASS SURFACING Class ‘A’ surface refers to the visible surfaces in a product where aesthetics almost become part of the functionality. The automotive industry has been using ‘A’ Class surfacing for some time now. We use automotive industry tools and know-how to elevate the aesthetics of our bike designs to match their performance level. Just one look at the latest generation of our Gallium Pro is revelatory of the values of ‘A’ Class surfacing.

LAY-UP OPTIMIZATION (FEA) Finite element analysis (FEA) is a simulation that has become another essential phase of our design process. Using FEA, we can optimize our carbon lay-up and dial frame properties directly in the design phase. This way, we reduce the number of physical prototypes and experiments. With FEA, we can now develop better bikes, faster.

PROTOTYPING AND TESTING All the computer simulations in the

world can’t replace prototyping, and every frame that we build goes

through several prototype iterations before it matches our initial design

goals and is ready to hit the market.

Prototypes are tested on the road but also go through series of tests in

our own laboratory on custom benches that we built for our specific needs.

We have impact and fatigue test benches for both frames and forks that help us improve our validation

methods. For these tests our standards outperform ISO norms. We also built a vibration test bench and devised a unique testing protocol by which we

measure comfort and vibration power transmitted to the cyclist.

All these tools serve one purpose: to make sure that our products

exceed all expectations and make riding any Argon 18 bike

an exceptional experience.

our technologies

A PERFECTLY BALANCED BIKEOptimal Balance is the design and fabrication philosophy behind all of Argon 18’s bikes. It is the subtle alchemy of lightness, rigidity, comfort and aerodynamics.

The result: a high-perform-ance bike that is easy to ride, that handles well climbing and is quick off the mark. What’s more, it provides the rider with a feeling of satisfaction without any unwanted fatigue.

Much more than a simple idea, Optimal Balance is the result of over 25 years of research and development—expertise which reinforces Argon 18’s reputation as a world leader in high-end bicycles.

You’ll feel the difference of Argon 18.

A BIKE FRAME MADE OF POWER AND COMFORTWith its Horizontal Dual System (HDS), Argon 18 has succeeded in combining rigidity and comfort, qualities that are typically seen as mutually exclusive. The basic idea is simple: our frame tubes are each designed for a specific purpose.

At Argon 18 we divide the frame into two zones along a diagonal line:

1. The tubes in the lower section of the frame are made with more carbon fiber to deliver maximum rigidity, especially in the bottom bracket. This provides a responsive and accurate transfer of power that is simply like no other.

2. The tubes in the upper section of the frame are made of different carbon fiber lay-ups to better absorb vibration and ensure maximum comfort on all types of terrain.

GEOMETRY TAILORED TO EVERY RIDER

Argon 18’s expertise in geometry is based on Gervais Rioux’s vast experience as a professional cyclist and a bike shop owner as well as extensive research and development.

The Argon Fit System (AFS) is designed to provide riders of all physical dimensions with consistent performance and optimal ergonomics. No matter what your morphology or your racing style, your positioning will always be efficient and comfortable, ensuring the ultimate in handling.

Become one with your bike. All for the love of cycling.

WHY NO WOMEN SPECIFIC DESIGN?In the cycling world, some notions die hard. One such persistent idea is that of women-specific frame geometries. In this view, women and men have different physical proportions, and so women require a shorter frame. Our 25-plus years of experience have convinced us, beyond a doubt, that this notion rests on market segmentation data much more than on any factual, rigorous analysis of human morphology.

That said, no one is claiming that there are no physical differences between the two.

It may well be worthwhile to select special components, such as a special saddle, a narrower handlebar, shorter brake levers, etc., but this could apply to all small riders, not just to women. Men and women of same height face the same challenges and must consider the same variables when it comes to bike fitting. Male or female, the issues are the same for a person of 1.60m (5’2’’).

This is why, some years ago, we introduced AFS (Argon Fit System): a truly human-specific geometry. AFS is designed to provide riders of all physical dimensions (men or women) with consistent performance and optimal ergonomics. No matter the rider’s morphology or racing style, his or her position-ing will always be efficient and comfortable, ensuring the ultimate in handling. Variants of this geometry may occur for specific purposes, but it remains the reference point for all frame designs.

This geometry fulfills two objectives:

1. To ensure optimized road handling in all frames of every size.

2. To maintain well-balanced ergonomics in all frames of every size.

AFS is based on Gervais Rioux’s long experience both as a racer and bike shop owner: 18 years of road racing and over 2,000 bike fitting sessions. This long experience has helped us identify the critical parameters and optimize them to create balanced and evenly graduated frame sizes: 6 for our road bikes and 5 for our Tri bikes.

AERODYNAMIC CARBON HANDLEBARWith its streamlined handlebar and totally integrated virtual stem, Argon 18’s ONEness 3.0 cockpit has a significant impact on the aerodynamic efficiency of the E-118 Next.

Weighing only 250 grams and featuring multiple settings, this system enhances our triathlon and time-trial bike’s versatility—making it one of the most integrated bikes on the market.

Maximizing aerodynamics so that you can give your best, while being truly comfortable.

TECHNOLOGY FOR CYCLISTSThe cycling industry is highly competitive and rapidly growing. In this market full of innovation and integration, Argon 18 is leading the way with technological solutions that are ever more effective.

Our solutions are tailored to the specific needs of cyclists—both men and women—at all levels of competition. More-over, our constantly evolving innovations are easy to both implement and use.

Evolution is the key to adap-tation. This understanding is what drives Argon 18 to create an even better ride.

The high-performance bike industry is thriving. Moreover, it’s constantly and rapidly evolving. In recent years, the focus has been on connectivity and integration. It’s not only about providing cyclists with more information, but also about improving their safety and performance.

TOPOLOGICAL COMPLIANCE SYSTEM (TCS)To achieve the optimal balance of comfort and performance from our endurance line, we needed a great geometry. In conjunction with the best geometry, we also needed perfect frame topology and carbon lay-up.

Through extensive research and analysis of stiffness, resistance, and aerodynamics using FEA and CFD software, we set out to design frames and forks that offer exceptional vertical compliance and react positively to road-induced vibrations. At the same time, they needed to remain impervious to lateral move-ment, thus ensuring maximum pedaling efficiency for optimal performance.

Our concept Topological Compliance System (TPS), was validated by numerous iterations of frames and forks tested both on the road and in our research and development laboratory using proprietary vibration testing tools.

THE PERFECT BLEND OF HANDLING AND STIFFNESSArgon 18’s proprietary 3D System is a clever mechanical solution that extends the headtube for more position-ing options. Three headtube positions are possible for every frame size; this increases rigidity by 5% at 15mm and 11% at 25mm, versus traditional spacers. With this system, the handlebar height can be perfectly adjusted to meet the needs and preferences of every rider.

This attention to detail is entirely for accurate steering and the love of cycling.

THE BEST MIX OF HANDLING, STIFFNESS AND INTEGRATIONFor our newest generation of frames, we wanted to push our 3D System concept even further by merging it seam-lessly to the frame.

The fully integrated 3D+ system has become an essential characteristic of our Endurance and Gravel frames. It delivers all the handling and stiffness benefits of the original 3D sys-tem in a streamlined version. It offers 3 head tube extension heights for every frame size: 0mm, 15mm and 30mm.

ARGON 18 FRAMES: COMPOSITE CONDUCTORSAt Argon 18, we design our bikes by breaking the frame down into eight distinct sec-tions, each with a specific role.

As the length of the frame increases so does the length of each section. This pre-serves the bike’s well-balanced proportions and ensures that all our frames, regardless of size, have ideal ergonomics and flawless handling.

1. SETBACKThis section of the horizontal tube is important in that it allows the saddle setback to be adjusted. Setback, one of the most critical parameters in rider position, is largely determined by seat tube angle. Argon 18 chooses its seat tube angles so as to provide the ideal range of adjustment options.

2. REACHReach determines the effective length of the bike, the key to rider comfort and finding the ideal position.

3. STACKStack is the vertical distance from the bottom bracket to the top of the headtube. It plays a key role in determining rider position and, in turn, rider comfort.

4. SEAT POST ANGLEThe seat post angle helps determine rider position, but also helps to maximize the rider’s aerodynamics and bio-mechanical efficiency when leaning forward. Thus, a bike with an adequate seat post angle ensures that the rider can choose the desired seat height, adjust the front/back and find the right upper-body position.

5. CHAINSTAYS/REAR TRIANGLETwo factors are taken into account when determining the ideal chainstay length:

How much quick handling is wanted

• The shorter the rear triangle, the quicker the bike’s handling.

• In order for a bike to go as fast as possible, the chain-stays must be reasonably long. That’s why our bikes are always stable, even at over 55 km/h.

Mechanical requirements and standards, particularly those set by the manufacturer Shimano

• For example, chainstays must be at least 405 mm long for proper derailleur functioning and accurate shifting.

6. WHEELBASEThe front center determines much of the bike’s handling and steering characteristics. A disproportionately short frame will generate an unpredictable, twitchy ride that tends to stray from the intended path. Conversely, a front triangle that is too long reduces handling.

This geometry section contributes the most to bal-ancing the bike’s proportions because reach length, along with the headtube angle and the fork rake, determines wheelbase length.

7. FORK ANGLEFork angle is the angle formed by the headtube and the ground. The smaller this angle, the quicker the bike will turn and the faster it will go when climbing. While a wider angle makes turning harder and slows the bike when climbing, it has the advantage of providing the rider with greater stability at high speeds.

8. RAKERake, or fork offset, is the perpendicular distance between the steerer tube and the center of the front wheel. This distance generally ranges from 40mm and 55mm.

AERODYNAMICSTESTED IN TRUE WIND CONDITIONSIn high-performance cycling, every second counts and aerodynamics can change everything. That’s why any reduction in drag—no matter how small—is of utmost importance. By testing our bikes in true wind conditions, we ensure that all our products are infinitely more accurate and competitive.

COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS (CFD)Argon 18’s bikes are subjected to extensive CFD testing. This technique uses computers to simulate the flow of liquids/gases involved in the aerody-namic design of bikes.

WIND-TUNNEL TESTINGIn the wind tunnel, Argon 18’s bikes are tested at yaw angles between 5 and 20 degrees, which corresponds to true wind conditions. This allows us to compare our bikes, but also to stand out from the competition.

VELODROME TESTINGVelodrome testing, the last stage of aerodynamic evaluation, is crucial. By testing our bikes in real-world situations with a racer, we are able to make precious aerodynamic gains and find the optimal rider position.

DRAG COEFFICIENT (CDA)Drag area or CDA is a true indicator of aerodynamic performance. A CDA value the product of the coefficient of drag of a given body and its frontal area. Unlike using watts or grams, a CDA value is not dependent on variable test conditions such as velocity or air density. The value is assumed to be a constant, and thus cannot be interpreted.

THE DEFINITION OF ENDURANCEThe Krypton CS is a true endurance bike designed with a geometry tuned for long days in the saddle. Its lay-out offers a stable and comfortable ride with a relaxed rider position while keeping true to our performance heritage. The Krypton CS will take you wherever the road may lead.

A WORD FROM OUR R&D DEPARTMENT“When designing both the Krypton CS and GF, we needed to expand our definition of comfort. With this in mind, we developed new tools to help us separate marketing gimmicks from truly innovative technology in frame design. Using virtual tools, we tested hundreds of theories that were later validated through new control methods which in turn helped benchmark the competition. The result of all this work: bikes providing unparalleled comfort with no compromise in performance.” — MARTIN FAUBERT, R&D DIRECTOR

TO THE END OF THE PAVED ROAD AND BEYONDWhen we set out to design the Dark Matter, we made sure not to come up with just another gravel bike. Our vision was to build a true gravel racer: a fast dirt road bike with a geometry adapted from our celebrated road frames. We wanted a bike offering improved stability but with a racing behavior, a bike that would feel just as fast and responsive on the trail that it would on the road. Mission accomplished.

DARK MATTER, A CLOSER LOOK The Dark Matter has a longer wheelbase than our endurance bikes, but it remains shorter than most other gravel bikes available with equivalent tire clearance. This is only possible with our dropped chain stay design.

The Dark Matter offers a longer front end than our road bikes. It adds stability and prevents toe overlap.

True to our design ethos and road race background, the Dark Matter was primarily intended to be used with 700c wheels although 650c wheels will work depending on tire width.
