Production: Growth in different shapesand sizesAlready the world’s largest exporter of steam coal,Indonesia is expected to boost its outbound trade to149Mt in 2007 – an increase of almost 25Mt on2006. The largest and most established producerswill make up the bulk of this growth but what ofsmaller-scale miners and current explorers? In 2007,we will turn the spotlight on these players who willplay an integral role in the future of the industry.

Consumption: Power-hungry AsiaAcross Asia, power demand is growing at a furiouspace and projects for new generation capacityhave been proliferating in China, India, Vietnam,Laos, Myanmar, Mongolia, etc. With most of theregion mirroring Indonesia’s move away fromdependence on oil, coal is a definite winner. Hearfrom key Asian and international consumers on theircoal requirements and procurement strategies.

The promise of technology PT PLN’s much touted ‘crash power programme’is likely to be the major constraint on futuregrowth of exports from Indonesia, restrictingthe amount of coal available for theinternational markets. What technologiesare being developed to transformuneconomic reserves intoexportable commodities such asgasified, liquefied andupgraded coal?

PLUS: As always, benefit from our insightfulanalyses of shipping sector trends, transportlogistics, trading and hedging, mining finance, andtheir influence on market fundamentals.

Make Coaltrans Asia your platform ofchoice to keep abreast of Asian coalindustry trends and mingle with theleaders and decision-makers drivingthe growth of the region's coal business.

OPTIONAL POST CONFERENCE FIELD TRIP

Boasting just over 23% of the country’s coal reserves, South Sumatera ishailed as the next growth hub of the Indonesian coal industry. With itsabundant low-grade coals – mostly lignite – ideally suited for thedomestic market, and its proximity to power-hungry Java, South Sumaterais set to be the prime candidate to help PLN deliver on its programme foran additional 10,000MW coal-fired power generation by 2009.

In 2007, Coaltrans’ field trip hosted by the region’s dominant coalproducer, PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA), will give delegatesa unique insight into the potential development of the South Sumaterancoal industry.

PTBA is Indonesia’s state-owned coalmining company (65% public, 35%private ownership) with total coal

reserves of 7.3Bt and total mineable reserves of 1.5Bt. PTBA miningactivities are located in Tanjung Enim (South Sumatera) and Ombilin(West Sumatera), where the company currently produces sub-bituminousand bituminous coal. At present, PTBA’s coal production amounts toapproximately 10Mt/y, mainly from the Tanjung Enim complex. Coalfrom the Tanjung Enim mines is delivered to two coal loading terminals(Tarahan Port and Kertapati Pier) using railway transportation. TarahanPort has a loading capacity of 25,000t/d, whilst Kertapati Pier has aloading capacity of 3,500t/d.

The tour will include:• TAL mine, PTBA’s largest development, containing five primary

seams of sub-bituminous and bituminous coal, whose thicknessvaries between 5m and 12m. Mining methods include a fivebucket wheel system operating at a maximum capacity of 1,300m2/h, feeding a conveyor belt. Truck and shovel is used in otherparts of the mine.
