Arrival and Day 1 of Course (Opening Ceremony) We were welcomed by Director General of Indian Pencak Silat Federation, Mr Mohammad Iqbal at Srinagar International Airport, Jammu and Kahsmir. We headed for Heemal Hotel to check in and prepare for the opening ceremony of the 4-day course at Sheri Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex at 1500hr.

The opening ceremony was inaugurated by the J&K State Sports Council and represented by Mr Jawaid Ahmad Shah, Secretary Sports Council. The list of guest includes: Indian Olympic Association (IOA)

The aim of the seminar is to give proper introduction of the rules and regulations of Pencak Silat as a sport. It is also to ensure that those who attended the course will be more prepared to officiate in the coming National/International Championships in India and abroad. President of APSIF, Mr Sheik Alau’ddin Yacoob Marican, PBM, mentioned in his opening speech that APSIF is delighted to be in Kashmir and see the number of participants for this seminar. APSIF is excited that the growth of Silat in India, and the coaches are the pillars of the development in India. The future of Pencak Silat is very bright in India with the leadership of the IPSF. APSIF is fully committed to support IPSF and they will be ready for upcoming championships like 5th Asian Beach Games 2016 and 18th Asian Games 2018.

Secretary General of Sports Council of India, Mr Jawaid Shah mentioned in his speech he hope to see Indian to be participating in the Pencak Silat sports and a better future for them in the sports. The ceremony also showed a changes of souvenirs between APSIF and IPSF. Fazlin and Ferdous showcased a Pencak Silat performance that attracted the attention of attendees.

Upon the conclusion of the opening ceremony, we started off with our first training session with the athletes. The participants comes from various martial arts background like:

2nd April 2016 – Day 2 of Course We started off Day 2 of the Course with the Theory Session for Wasit and Jury. The session was led by Mr Mohd Yasrin Mohd Yasil, International Wasit Jury. The things that were covered in the Wasit and Jury Theory course are as follow:

Mr Mohd Yasril then proceeded with the video sharing session where competition videos of Tanding, Tunggal, Ganda and Regu were shared with all participants. Mr Yasrin started off with the practical session before we headed for lunch. In this session, Mr Yasrin portrayed the standardized hand signals (aba-aba) of a Wasit during a competition. The participants were reminded that the hand signals must be very clear and precise as it is very important that the athlete understands the message that is being passed.

After lunch, we proceeded back into the Sheri Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex to continue with the sessions. As Mr Yasrin had already portrayed the hand signal before lunch, he starts off with teaching the participants the proper placing of hands and words to say. All in attendance were to repeat Pasang, Sedia, Mulai and Henti. In order to make sure everyone is fully aware of the routine, Mr Yasrin does a random pick for participants to showcase their hand signals and words to say.

After Mr Yasrin concluded his Wasit Jury Practical session, Mr Sheik takes over for the Coaching Practical session. Continuing from the previous session whereby we have taught on polah langkah, hand pattern, horse stance and mandatory 8 step movements, the session started by recalling the items that were previously taught. As they have attended the wasit jury course, which includes the rules and regulation of an international pencak silat competition, we continued the session by teaching the following:

Those athletes who are interested in the artistic category had a different training session, under Ms Nur Fazlin. A group of 20 students were taught the Tunggal movements. 3 students manage to complete the whole 14 Jurus.

We took a break for dinner before continuing with the competition secretariat course. The purpose

of this competition secretariat course is to ensure that the team that attended this 4-day course is

aware of how to run a competition.

3rd April 2016 – Day 3 of Course We started off Day 3 of the Course with the Coaching Practical Sesion. As the Indoor Sports Complex was not open yet, we carried out the session outside of the Sports Complex. The participants were reminded that whatever that is being taught will be included in the theory and practical test which will take place in the afternoon. The test will include from basic stretching to kicking technique to cooling down.

After our stretching and warming up session, we proceed into the hall and continued with more techniques. Mr Sheik demonstrated a total of 15 dropping techniques, and participants were once again reminded that they are required to do a successful drop for the test. Mr Sheik goes through recap on what has been taught to make sure all participants are prepared for the test. The recap covers from wasit jury, competition secretariat and coaching courses.

Before we ended all our session, we conducted a theory session for the coaching course. In this theory session, we went through on the following:

Responsibility of a Coach

Communication between Coach and Athlete

Difficulties Coaches have to go through

Training in Pencak Silat

All we released for lunch and revision while we prepare for the tests that is going to be conducted in the afternoon. The participants were divided into 2 groups: those who can read and write English and those are requires a translator.

We then proceeded to the practical test for both wasit jury and coaching. The group were divided into two: half of the group is taking the wasit jury test, the other half will take the coaching test before dinner break. Wasit Jury Test Consist of:

Proper hand signal (aba-aba)

Proper pronunciation of wording

Handling of uncertain situation

Giving proper points / penalties / warnings / reprimands

Coaching Test consist of:

Stretching / Warming Up / Conditioning

4th April 2016 – Day 4 of Course (Closing Ceremony) We were invited for a live guest appearance on Good Morning Jammu & Kashmir. The show was live from 0800hr to 0900hr. Mr Sheik, Mr Iqbal, Fazlin and Ferdous attended the show where Fazlin and Ferdous did 2 sets of demonstrations: Artistic and Match Performances. The live interview went well, as Mr Sheik mentioned about the spread of Pencak Silat in India is amazing as we have 22 out of 32 states that attended the course. Mr Mohammad Iqbal also mentioned that the Asian Pencak Silat Federation have conducted the courses and there were test to make sure that those who attended is sure of the rules in Pencak Silat. It is a great opportunity to create more awareness of Pencak Silat across India. While the live show was ongoing, Mdm Sa’adian and Mr Yasrin were already at the Sheri Indoor Sports Complex preparing for a mini competition and expose new referees and athletes to this game. The mini competition were carried out by those who attended the course. They planned the competition under the supervision of APSIF, based on what they have learned for on the previous days.

The mini competition went well and we proceeded with the certificate presentation ceremony. The certificate were given out to the participants who attended the course, took all the test and manage to pass. APSIF have taken the initiative to recognize 5 of the best students for the courses held. The top 5 students are:

The certificate ceremony ended at 1500hr and we proceeded to have lunch before going on the city tour. We went to the Gulmarg Mountain, a famous tourist spot in Kashmir. It was raining, thus we did not manage to do the activities that they offer.

We had our dinner at a well-known restaurant in Kashmir and were joined by the Joint Secretary of Indian Olympic Association. We discussed on the promotion, progress and development of Pencak Silat in India under Indian Pencak Silat Federation (IPSF). IPSF are working towards the following:

Getting the remaining 10 out of 32 states to set up Pencak Silat by December 2016

Getting endorsement by Indian Olympic Association as a recognized sport in India

Conducting a Indian National Championship in 2016

Getting endorsement for 5th Asian Beach Games, 2016 – Danang, Vietnam

5th April 2016 – Return to Singapore Before we leave for the airport, we had a breakfast and meeting with the management committee of Indian Pencak Silat Federation. All the committee members are very committed and they are working with many authorities to make Pencak Silat strong in India. They promised to run Pencak Silat with dignity, pride and honor with full respect.

Conclusion

The Asian Pencak Silat Federation (APSIF) would like to express our gratitude to Mr Mohammad Iqbal for being a great host. The students were also very eager and keen to learn new things each session. APSIF would also like to thank the Singapore Silat Federation (PERSISI) for their support under Referee and Jury, as well as the peraga (demonstrator).

APSIF have high hopes for the development of Pencak Silat in India, and will continue to work together closely with Mr. Mohammad Iqbal towards the goals and targets set by Indian Pencak Silat Federation.
