R O C A I N T H E W O R L D

Dear Reader,

The markets of the world’s emerging economies are nothing new to Roca. We had identified them more than a decade ago and initially developed an expansion strategy in markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, where our presence is now firmly consolidated. This process has continued, to encompass other markets such as the Middle East, Argentina, Malaysia, Morocco, Egypt, the Czech Republic and Poland, all of which present new growth opportunities for us.

Present in 5 continents and in more than 135 countries, we work in every time zone and communicate in dozens of languages. So it is that we have taken on the challenge of ensuring that our products can be found in some of the world’s most disparate and far-flung places. Examples of this are the athletes’ village for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Brazil’s Arena Pantanal stadium, which will host events of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the Hotel Intercontinental Shanghai Pudong and the monumental World Towers project in Mumbai.

In this edition of What’s News, we present the latest information on our brand, from its partnership in leading international projects to its participation in construction and bathroom space trade fairs such as Spain’s Construmat and China’s KBC. We also feature the meeting between the famous Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the We Are Water Foundation and Roca at the Roca Barcelona Gallery, and the recent opening of the Roca Shanghai Gallery, a sign of our expansion and the worldwide success of the Gallery network.

I’d like to invite you to check out all Roca’s news and international activities and thank you for your interest.

Roca’s products and bathroom spaces are present in some of the world’s most emblematic developments. Beijing’s Olympic Village and Mumbai’s future World Towers are just two examples

A passion for international architecture

Over the course of recent years, Roca has enhanced its international profile even further through its involvement in some of the world’s most famous works of architecture, ranging from business centres and luxury hotels to sports facilities and cultural venues.

One of the most ambitious upcoming projects is Mumbai’s World Towers, which will include the world’s tallest resident ial building. Thanks to the exc lus ive Armani /Roca co l lect ion, a concept born out of a partnership between two established, industry-leading brands, Roca forms part of this project that is characterised by its elegance, quality and design.

World-class sporting eventsThe wide range of world-class architec-

tural benchmarks Roca is involved in embraces huge sporting events, including various Olympic Games, such as those of Barcelona in 1992 and Beijing in 2008, more specifically in the latter case with its participation in the Beijing Olympic Village, which earned our brand a LEED Gold Award, in recognition of energy efficiency and respect for the environment.

What’s more, our products will be present in next year’s 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The Arena Pantanal stadium in Cuiabá will host four World Cup matches, and all of its public conveniences incorporate our Nexo products, with its perfectly-proportioned contemporary design that fits all kinds of public spaces.

Additionally, to coincide with the event, we have reached an agreement with the Vila Ventura de Viamao hotel and sports centre to install WCs from the Celite and Incepa brands, both part of the Roca Group.

Business centres and cultural venues

Roca also boasts a significant presence in Russia, a country experiencing constant renewal and architectural transformation. With its combination of elegance and comfort, MFC City of Capitals reflects the renewed, modern character of the city of Moscow. The office complex and the two towers, 73 and 62 storeys tall and bearing the names of the cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, were developed by

global architecture and design firm NBBJ. For this project, our Bol and Meridian models were used for public spaces, boasting styles in which quality and serenity create a solid, balanced overall look.

In the world of culture, the Bolshoi Theatre, which first opened its doors to the public on 20 October 1856, is one of Moscow’s greatest attractions. After wide-ranging renovation works, the building was largely restored to its historical appearance and became one of the world’s most technically advanced theatres. It is Russia’s main national theatre and showcase for the country’s musical traditions and features products from our Hall, Meridian, Dama Senso and Florentina collections, versatile ranges that meet every need.

Roca and the We Are Water Foundation partner with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in its commitment to alleviating the world’s water-related problems with the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge

World scientists invited by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation propose a revolution in the WC to tackle the lack of sanitation in some parts of the world

Today, some 40% of the world’s population –or around 2.5 billion people– have no access to basic sanitation. These figures provide an indication of the serious health problems that lead to some 1.5 million infant deaths per year from diarrhoea.

Given these alarming figures, in 2011, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation created the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge to promote innovative solutions to put an end to the lack of basic sanitation in developing countries.

Committed companies and institutions

Under the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge slogan, Roca and the We Are Water Foundation collaborated in partnership with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation at an event at the Roca Barcelona Gallery, where 60 representatives of multinationals, industries and research institutions showcased the progress made by participating organisations.

Ove r the course o f the f i r s t day, organisations such as the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Delft University of Technology, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG), the National University of Singapore, Loughborough University, the California Institute of Technology, the University of Toronto, the Stanford University Climate Foundation, the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Santec, Cranfield University, Eram Scientific Solutions, RTI International, the University of Colorado Boulder, Duke University and Unilever discussed how

to develop innovative and af fordable technologies to improve sanitation in underdeveloped countries, particularly densely-populated urban areas.

Other issues tackled were how to reduce energy consumption, manage water saving and environmental impact, methods for emptying septic tanks and treating wastewater, new ways of reusing waste and developing sanitary solutions based on human waste that can subsequently be used to generate electricity.

Sustainability and innovation: fundamental pillars

During the second day, multinationals such as Janicki Industries, Santec LLC, Synapse Product Development, Battelle Memorial Institute, NORAM Engineering, IDEO, P&G, Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser, American Standard and Roca underlined the importance of the concept of collaboration to generate mutual benefit with these foundations, institutions and bodies.

To this end, concepts such as sustain-ability and concern for the environment and people’s welfare were stressed. Within this context, the role of corporations is crucial, as they can contribute knowhow, technology, research and professionals when it comes to developing initiatives that provide solutions for those lacking access to a toilet.

For our part, we at Roca stressed factors such as sustainability and innovation with the presentation of two of our most pioneering products, the W+W and the In-Tank. We stressed that we could contribute our experience in WC technology, our industrial capacity and our industrial partnerships. The role of the We Are Water Foundation, which has the mission of raising awareness of the world’s water-related problems, was also highlighted.

One of the main conclusions reached during the event was that companies selling products for the bathroom space play a very significant role in improving sanitary conditions in developing countries.

P: What are the goals of the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge?

R: When Bill Gates visited Africa, one of the biggest issues he saw there was how the problem of sanitation affected people’s quality of life. So it was that we decided to focus our efforts on sanitation. At the time, there were already other organisations working in the area of water, but almost nobody on this particular issue. We have the power of engineering, the intelligence of the critical mass and science, and the question is “how can we use this knowledge to reinvent the toilet, improving it and making it more accessible?”

P: Why did the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation decided to work with Roca and the We Are Water Foundation?

R: After we announced the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, Roca and the We Are Water Foundation suggested to us that there was a way that they could participate and allow us to benefit from the knowhow of a leading

company with great experience in the use of technology for sanitation and the bathroom system. What’s more, Roca’s values are a perfect fit with those of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and so Roca Barcelona Gallery was presented as the ideal place for bringing all the project partners together and housing them in such an inspiring venue to get them involved with the problem.

P: Is the involvement of large companies in this global issue important?

R: It’s essential. We need to take ad-vantage of the fact that large companies have great awareness of the markets in which they work, that they have a great understanding of implementation, marketing, social interaction and engineering. With its almost one hundred years of history, Roca has perfected all these aspects and today boasts great manufacturing experience and an optimal production system that can benefit others.

“The goal of the Challenge is to use engineering to solve the problem of access to sanitation” Carl Hensman, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Program Officer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Last April, Carl Hensman, responsible for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, discussed the goals of this challenge and some of the key factors in the programme’s development: to secure proper sanitation for 2.5 million people.

Stella: the shower with a versatile, contemporary design

Stella offers a wide variety of solutions: 4 hand showers, 80 mm and 100 mm in diameter, offering 1 and 3 functions, 700mm and 900mm shower kits and shower sets.

The functions of the new collection are Rain, Soft and Pulse. The Rain function boasts fine water outlets to provide the body with a pleasant sensation; Soft has a bubble effect and gradual water outlets; lastly, the Pulse function offers intense

water outlets that provide the body with a revitalising massage. What’s more, with its Easy Clean system, limescale deposits are easily eliminated.

Once again, Roca confirms its vision and commitment to intelligent design of the bathroom space to meet new consumer requirements and to fit the new uses of the bathroom space.

Among Roca’s new electronic faucet offerings, worthy of particular note is the L20-E, based on a simple yet modern design created to meet the different needs of public spaces and the Moai-E, with its more geometric lines. These two solutions are –like all of our electronic faucets– extremely reliable and tough, meeting and indeed exceeding required European standards. All the electronic models are limited to a flow of 5.7 l/min, thus guaranteeing unbeatable water savings without compromising user comfort. Additionally, the battery versions include an LED-based warning system to indicate when the battery is running low.

For timer faucets, Instant represents an optimal solution for high-traffic areas, offering an extremely broad product range covering the needs of three areas: basins, showers and urinals.

Avant is a new line with an advanced design, suited to public or semi-public spaces looking to stand out from the crowd. In addition to conveying a sense of elegance, its design helps prevent splashing water over the basin surround.

Also, thanks to its Soft push action, which requires less effort, it is easier to use for both children and the elderly.

The Roca Gallery opens its doors in China

17 leading Moroccan architects discover the emblematic Roca London Gallery

Roca has inaugurated a new Roca Gallery in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. Opened this last June, the Roca Shanghai Gallery stands testimony to our brand’s commitment to making its philosophy and its products more accessible to all our publics.

Designed by Barcelona’s Francesc Rifé Studio, this new space joins our existing Galleries located in four cities that are benchmarks in the worlds of architecture, design and trendsetting in general: London, Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona.

In addition to raising awareness of our brand’s global nature around the world, the Roca Shanghai Gallery provides a forum for the ongoing dialogue between society and those professionals who share our concern and passion for evolving the bathroom space.

In the words of Xavier Torras, Roca Group Brand & Communication Director, “Shanghai is a strategic business hub that offers countless opportunities. Ever since its arrival in the Asian market in 1999, our brand has been committed to bolstering its presence there by adapting itself to local needs and idiosyncrasies. The Roca Shanghai Ga l ler y prov ides a fur ther c lear example of this commitment and aims to become a benchmark meeting point for sector professionals”.

An interactive space open to the public

Architects Francesc Rifé Studio developed the Roca Gallery concept based on a space with a symmetrical floor plan that is irregular in form. The challenge was to create a space with a personality all its own that could offer easy and fluid routing for the public and that was, at the same time, completely integrated into its surroundings and in continual dialogue with society.

One of the key design concepts that characterises this building is its impact at street level. This effect was achieved by means of a concept that contrasts day and night. During the daytime, the glass façade plays host to a range of product display modules. Come nightfall, a number of translucent screens are deployed, hiding the

Roca brought together a group of 17 architects from Morocco to introduce them to the Roca London Gallery, our space in the British capital, designed by Zaha Hadid. In this way, Roca continues to strengthen its international relationship with leading professionals from the world of architecture in the countries in which it has a presence and bolster

the strategy of the Group, which regards Morocco as a key market.

Dur ing their stay, Roca of fered the Moroccan architects a tour of London’s architectural gems, as well as some of its most celebrated museums and galleries, such as the Tate Modern and the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre.

displayed products and screening Rituals to the outside world. So it is that the building’s façade provides an evocative, fascinating element that captures the public’s attention at all times.

The Roca Shanghai Gallery features a central access door that leads to a room containing all the audiovisual equipment that accompanies visitors on their tour of our history and milestones and on their discovery of Roca’s values: innovation, design, sustainability and wellness. To illuminate this area, a huge mesh of light, based on suspended luminaires, has been created.

So it is that this new space has been designed as a key tool in conveying Roca’s philosophy, history and values, displaying our product innovations and promoting our brand’s commitment to people and the environment.

London’s Architectural Association School of Architecture collaborates with the Roca Madrid Gallery

Roca takes part in the first Intenz Diagonal by The Shopping Night Barcelona

The AA, the prestigious Architectural Association School of Architecture, brought Flow Fields from London to Madrid. Flow Fields is a multisensory installation that uses the movement of water as the starting point for presenting a series of activities that play with the relationship between body, music and image.

As part of the programming for Flow Fields, the Roca Madrid Gallery brought together architecture professionals in a debate to discuss the importance of interdiscipl inary col laborat ion as an opportunity for professional development. Benedetta Tagliabue, architect at EMBT (Enric Miralles - Benedetta Tagliabue), Salvador Gilabert, EMBT Project Director, Emiliano Armani, of the Enric Miralles Foundation, Edgar González, architect and publisher, Ariadna Cantis, architect and FreshMadrid curator, and

To celebrate the arr ival of summer, Barcelona played host to the first Intenz Diagonal by The Shopping Night Barcelona, a cultural festival designed to boost one of the capital’s most important shopping distr icts: the Avinguda Diagonal area.

The event was the venue for brands, establishments, hotels, restaurants and cultural facilities, which opened their doors with experiences and offerings to boost one of the city of Barcelona’s most important shopping districts. Roca took part in this initiative to mobilise the Catalan capital with a spectacular action to make it more accessible to its public.

The leitmotiv chosen for this first Intenz Diagonal was musical theatre. Roca picked

ar tist Allard van Hoorn, argued that experimenting in dif ferent f ields allows architecture and other disciplines to open up new lines of conversation.

In addition to this round table session, the Roca Madrid Gallery projected onto its outside screen a unique audiovisual

work covering the activities carried out at the Roca London Gallery.

With this initiative, Roca strengthened its partnership with London’s AA and also created a link with Matadero Madrid, one of the Spanish capital’s most outstanding centres for contemporary creation.

jazz as the theme for its three enticing stands in the Open Village, located on the Avinguda Diagonal itself. Passers-by were able to familiarise themselves, on site, with some of our novelties and most innovative products, such as the In-Tank, the W+W and the Newcast cast iron bathtub.

For its part, and in line with the chosen theme, the Roca Barcelona Gallery organised a series of music and dance performances inspired by this musical genre, with more than 1,000 people enjoying the show All that Jazz!

Fur thermore, Roca of fered v is i tors discounts on the purchase of some products , such as hand showers, thermostatic faucets and furniture.

Nature: an example of intelligent architecture and sustainable design

During the first session, Design follows nature, speakers explained how far nature provides a point of reference and inspiration in solving problems through design. The event benefitted from the participation of professionals such as Frederic Fol Laymarie, Co-Director of the MSc in Computer Games and Entertainment at Goldsmiths, University of London, Javier Peña, Scientific Director of MaterFAD Barcelona, and Martín Ruíz de Azúa, designer and founder of the Martín Azúa studio.

One of the most interesting contributions made by architect Frederic Fol Laymarie was that computers provide an additional space in which to study the processes involved in perception. For this reason,

contributed their points of view on the issue. One of Antonio Martínez Taberner’s

most important conclusions was that the time has come to embrace minimalism, a function that we must copy from nature. “We consume resources at a breakneck speed, but nature only uses those materials she herself can spare. We need to be able to function at a speed permitted by renewable energy, to distribute consumption fairly, and be capable of consuming at the rate we produce and at the speed of regeneration”, he stated.

With these sessions, Roca has shown the general public how nature holds the key to sustainability and explained how products inspired by our natural surrounding are more competitive and environmentally friendly.

he backed a project integrating robotics, computers, ar t and perception to use computers though experience.

In the second session, Nature is followed by architecture, famed American biomimicry architect Dennis Dollens stated “we must start thinking of intelligent architecture in construction and commit to a new way of working with nature, extrapolating nature’s forms, visualising it in architecture and digitalising it”.

Additionally, other professionals from the world of architecture and biology, such as Antonio Martínez Taberner, Director of the Biology Department of the University of the Balearic Islands, Enrique Soriano and Pep Tornabell, architects and researchers at CODA (Computational Design Affairs)

After the success of Biomimesis: Design inspired by nature, Roca rounded off the exhibition with a series of talks on the subjects of biomimicry, architecture and design

Carlos Garriga, We Are Water Foundation Project Manager, travelled with the winners of the f irst We Art Water Film Festival, Camilo Arenas and Sergi Frías, to visit the Foundation’s aid projects in Bolivia and Ecuador, managed in collaboration with UNICEF and Education without Borders, respectively. The purpose of their visit was to shoot a documentary to raise awareness within the international communityof the global problem of water in the world’s most deprived countries.

Almost 2.3 million inhabitants in Bolivia have no access to water utilities and 5 million have none to proper sanitation. This is why the We Are Water Foundation began its water, sanitation and hygiene project for the Guaraní communities and schools of Chaco-Chuquisaqueño, with the goal of reducing vulnerability, high levels of malnutrition and infant morbidity rates in disperse Guaraní rural communities and schools.

To achieve these goals, the Foundation has carried out actions such as community and school initiatives promoting hygiene habits, the digging of wells, technical assistance for municipal authorities and the bolstering of local structures towards the community management of services.

Add i t i ona l l y, t he We A r e Wa t e r Foundation visited the project carried out together with Education without Borders in the provinces of Loja, Zamora Chinchipe and E l Oro in Ecuador. These lie in an area that has great difficulties in obtaining water during the dry season and that suffers from soil erosion due to the lack of infrastructure in the rainforest region.

Thanks to this project, 300 farmers, 80 agro-ecological promoters and 31 organisations have benefitted from the implementation of clean crops and fish farming infrastructures, the production of organic fertilisers, protection of water supply sources, the study and design of family and community irrigation systems, the construction of shal low wells and pressurised

As Carlos Garriga explained, “in assisting such depr ived communities as those in Ecuador and Bolivia, we are helping hundreds of people to improve their lives and gain access to work, without them having to move far away from their families and loved ones”.

For their part, winners of the We Art Water Film Festival Camilo Arenas and Sergi Frías visited one of the Foundation’s projects to shoot a documentary. On the one hand, Arenas noted with regard to his journey to Bolivia, “it’s the first time that I’ve visited these projects and it’s been a powerful experience. The Foundation’s involvement in water-related problems

encourages audiovisual professionals to continue working and al lows us to play our part in changing things”. On the other, Frías explained that, thanks to his visit to Ecuador, he was able to “shoot a documentary that will help explain to society how these communities are progressing in the production of crops and improving their management of water resources”.

The We A re Water Foundat ion embarks upon a new project in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in collaboration with the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, to improve the availability of water resources and cover local inhabitants’ agricultural and cattle-raising needs.

With its scant and irregular annual rainfall, Andhra Pradesh is India’s second-driest state after Rajasthan. These unforgiving weather conditions lead to economic losses, reduced production and an increase in food prices, factors that affect the way of life of almost 80% of the population and that in many cases force peasants to emigrate to large cities in search of opportunities.

To a l l ev i a te these p rob lems, t he Foundation will be building a reservoir with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters 500m from the village of Girigetla in the Pathikonda area. This new reservoir, which will collect water from the local creek, called “Lingalavagu Vanka”, will be used to supply a total of 23 wells. The water collected will be able to irrigate up to 46 hectares.

In this way, the Foundation aims to provide the inhabitants of Girigetla with an infrastructure that will allow them to collect as much water as possible, to be used to diversify their crops and raise livestock, to improve their quality of life and create job opportunities so that the most disadvantaged among them may remain in their villages. Peasants will therefore no longer have to emigrate to large cities, as their lands will once again be fertile and allow them to earn a decent living.

The project will benefit numerous families of farmers who are giving their land for the building project, contributing a total of 10 hectares.

The main goal of this initiative is to diversify agriculture to create more jobs, improve local inhabitants’ living conditions and therefore prevent people abandoning rural areas and migrating to large cities

The We Are Water Foundation will be officially presenting the second edition of this competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in September

The We Are Water Foundation backs a new project in India

The second We Art Water Film Festival hits the ground running with innovations and a jury made up of wor ld-leading personalities from the fields of film, literature and cooperation.

New jury members include Carl Hensman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Ned Breslin of the prestigious international o rgan isat ion Wate r fo r the Peop le. Additionally, both f i lmmaker and Vice-President of the Spanish Film Academy, Judith Cole l l, and Car los Jiménez of the United Nations return as jurors for this second contest, reaf f irming their commitment to the global issue of water.

Film-lovers looking to participate must show their awareness of the world’s water and sanitation problems in 1 to 3 minute-long audiovisual works that focus on the issue.

Coinciding with the presentation of the We Art Water Film Festival at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in September, participants will be able to officially register for the contest on the We Are Water Foundation’s website from 28 September

to 31 December. And, from January until 31 March, they must submit their shorts to compete in one of the following categories: Best Documentary, Best Animation, Public Vote and “Special Instagram” Innovation in Formats. A shortlist of finalists will be

published in April 2014, and in May of the same year the winners will be announced at a special ceremony.

Following the success of the first edition, which boasted more than 500 entries from more than 80 countries and 150 of the

world’s best film schools, the Foundation has renewed its commitment to the We Art Water Film Festival as a tool for raising awareness of and providing information on the problems of the world’s water resources.

I n a b r e a k w i t h p r ev i o u s ye a r s , Construmat 2013, the International Construction Show held in Barcelona last May, was promoted as a benchmark international event for the sector. This, the eighteenth such show, focused its efforts on three key themes: internationalisation, innovation and sustainability.

Roca was one of the manufacturers of products for the bathroom space with a notable presence in this meeting point between dif ferent Spanish construction sector players. With regard to our role as a leading exhibitor, Carlos Velázquez, Roca Group Corporate Marketing Director, stated, “the company’s wish is always to be accessible to customers and consumers, actively participating in the most important international shows in the fields of construction, architecture and interior design”.

In-Tank and W+W: innovation and sustainability

Under the Discover your bathroom space stand concept, Roca presented a varied sample of combinations fitting the needs of different projects and surroundings, from private spaces to the busiest public conveniences.

Additionally, the brand participated in the Construmat Innovation Center with Josep Congost, Roca Design and Innovation Director, to present the key innovations developed in recent years: the In-Tank and the W+W, two internationally-honoured concepts created with the aim of reinventing design in the bathroom space. The revolutionary In-Tank, the world’s first WC to integrate the cistern in the pan itself, features an adjustable flush to save water and space. For its part, the W+W incorporates two essential elements of the bathroom space, basin and WC, into one item, reusing water and permitting savings of 25%.

New faucet products included the L20 collection, which, thanks to its innovative technology and frontal Cold Start, minimises water and energy production, while the Open line exemplifies our passion for design and comfort with a rain-effect water outlet.

Other offerings presented at the show were the new rimless Clean Rim WC from the The Gap collection, in floor and wall-hung versions, while furniture and accessory solutions included Debba, Prisma and Victoria, and shower space solutions featured the Puzzle collection and the Terran shower trays, which combine perfectly with our Cosmo and Easy screens.

New Roca Tiles products included Downtown and Habitat, the two series of the new 2013 collection.

The Downtown series is ideal for exteriors and interiors, given its greatly enhanced technical features. This latest-generation rectified tile is available in three formats, including the innovative 80x80 R Large Format. The collection comes in three finishes

–Natural, Lapato and Structured (ABS)– with non-slip properties. What’s more, the Downtown meshes provide a huge boost for the series’ decorative possibilities.

Meanwhile, Habitat stands out due to the elegance and quality of its wood finish, and can fit in any space, be it public or private. The natural finishes of this rectified porcelain floor tile represent the greatest expression of wood as the ecological material of the future. It is available in two high-performance formats, one of them also in a non-slip (ABS) finish, and five different colours, with complementary decorative elements and parts.

With our presence at Construmat, we at Roca once again demonstrated our interest in the most important international events and meetings in the worlds of architecture and construction.

Did you know…That Roca has reached

an agreement to equip the Governador Magalhães Stadium in Belo Horizonte, which will host 6 matches of

the FIFA World Cup 2014?

The venue boasts a capacity for 64,000

spectators, a museum on the history of

Brazilian football and a 7,000 square meter

The Mexican architectural landscape: a shared Spanish-Mexican vision was the title of the event that gathered together leading architects from Mexico and Spain to seek opinions and a knowledge exchange between the two countries.

The event brought together Jorge and Arturo Arditti, Javier Sordo Madaleno, Mauricio Rocha and Francisco Serrano, leading figures in Mexican architecture, for the first time in Spain. The Spanish architects present at the Roca Madrid Gallery included Carlos Lamela and Alejandro Bueso-Inchausti, while the Roca Barcelona Gallery enjoyed the presence of Carlos Ferrater, Roberto Terradas, Ramon Sanabria and Olga Felip, the latter recently honoured with the AJ Award for Emerging Woman Architect of the Year, granted by British publication Architects Journal.

Some key conclusions Carlos Lamela explained how “one

of the most important aspects is that landscaping is taken very seriously in Mexico. This has a lot to do with the humanity present in the country, in terms of both materials and labour force”.

Additionally, brothers Jorge and Arturo Arditti noted the dif ferences between Spain and Mexico, pointing out that, “one very significant difference between the two countries is that, in Mexico, architectural aesthetics are in the hands of political interests. Historically, in Spain, architects have been respected figures in the social order, while in Mexico there is a problem stemming from the acceptance of architects in society”.

For h is par t, Francisco Serrano highlighted the fact that, “until recently, fo re ign a rch i tec ts have not p l ayed a s ign i f icant ro le in our countr y. At the beginning of the 90s, i t was also unimaginable that the works of Mexican artists could be present in large buildings and prestigious museums like the MoMA (New York’s Museum of Modern Ar t). Thanks to the globalisation of culture and its communication networks, Mexican architecture has found a voice and a profile on the world stage”.

Architect Carlos Ferrater stressed that, “in our work, we view light as one of our differentiating and characteristic attributes, and this is something that we also have in common with Mexican architecture, which also regards it as being of key importance”.

Institutional supportThe Mexican architectural landscape: a

shared Spanish-Mexican vision also enjoyed the participation of representatives from Mexico’s leading institutions, as well as those from Spanish architecture. The session held at the Roca Madrid Gallery was attended by Ximena Caraza, Director of Proméxico España, Francisco Javier Ramírez Acuña, Mexican Ambassador to Spain and José Antonio Granero Ramírez, President of COAM, the Madrid Institute of Architects. At the Roca Barcelona Gallery were Norma Ang Sánchez, Head Consul at the Mexican Consulate in Barcelona and Lluís Comerón, President of COAC, the Catalan Institute of Architects.

The symbiosis between the dif ferent representatives of contemporary architecture allowed for discussion on the potential for cooperation between architects from the two countries, and not just between Mexico and Spain, but also on the possibilities of partnerships with other markets.

The workshops held at the Roca Madrid and Barcelona Galleries were aimed at analysing the most important innovative solutions that architects can contribute to stimulating the market

Roca took part in the Kitchen & Bath China 2013 show, an international event that every year brings together professionals from around the world to present the latest trends in the bathroom space market.

One of the novelties presented was our new Alba bathroom collection, which will be sold on the Asian market. Designed by the Roviras & Torrente Industrial Design Studio, the range was conceived as a holistic system and a space where wellness, relaxation and leisure recreate a sensorial experience to improve quality of life in the home. Thanks to its adjustable indirect l ighting, the l ine can create dif ferent intensities of light to suit any occasion.

Among the products included in Alba are a bathtub with a hydromassage system featuring a remote control and touch screen that allows users to enjoy a wellness experience with lateral waterfalls, and a thermostatic faucet with LED lights indicating the water temperature and flow. Additionally, a shower kit with a marble finish invites users to relax with a combination of water and lights than can turn a normal day into something extraordinary.

Also presented was the Open faucet that offers, in addition to low water consumption, an innovative water outlet design, with its rain effect. So, too, was the Venecia faucet series, designed in an imperial, classic and elegant style and offering a range of finishes.

Among the bathroom furniture on display, Prisma was presented as an innovative and versatile collection for different bathroom spaces, thanks to a design featuring straight lines and its variety of size options.

Other important products lending a touch of elegance and design to the bathroom space were the N-Meridian basin, the M3 and L90 faucets, which work both manually and automatically at the press of a single button, and the classic Newcast freestanding bathtub.

Our presence at KBC Shanghai bolstered our strategy of offering the right products to meet the needs of each of the different markets in which we are present.

With the collaboration of Versace Home, developer DAMAC Properties has created luxury apartments in the stunning Al Jawharah skyscraper in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s commercial capital and one of its largest cities.

Al Jawharah, which in Arabic means “the jewel of the Red Sea”, is a project developed by building firm DAMAC Properties, for which Versace Home created an interior design concept fusing design and luxury for the homes on the top 10 storeys of the tower, located in the heart of a shopping district alongside the seafront promenade.

Given our experience in technology, innovation and design in the bathroom space, DAMAC Proper t ies used a number of Roca products for these homes, including the Nexo WC and bidet, the Fuego countertop basin and the Princess-N bathtub.

Conf i rming the pro ject ’s success, Al Jawharah won the award for “Best Residential Project of 2012” in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf and was, for the second year running, honoured in the International Property Awards, specifically in the Best Residential High Rise Development and Best Interior Design Apartment categories.

In shor t, this of fer ing from DAMAC Properties and Versace Home stands out for the creation of a luxurious bathroom space in which Roca products play a leading role, inviting users to relax and care for themselves depending upon their needs and feelings at any given time.

Roca secured second place in the Industry category - Production, Recycling Industry and Waste Management Sector.

The international jury honoured Roca for our policy of caring for the environment and for applying it throughout our production process and products, which are designed to offer unbeatable water and energy savings. Some examples include the L20, a faucet collection offering a frontal Cold Start for minimal water consumption, Victoria-T, a shower column featuring thermostatic technology, and W+W, an innovative solution integrating WC and basin into a single product.

As par t of our commitment to the environment, years ago, we at Roca created our Zero Waste Programme, which includes a specific energy management policy and reuse of the waste from all our production processes and from all the company’s manufacturing units worldwide.

Roca’s manufacturing in Bulgaria provides a great example of our responsible attitude towards nature and the conservation

of resources. From design to the entire production process, Roca Bulgaria strictly complies with the country’s environmental legislat ion and the highest international standards. Five years ago, the company introduce an ISO 14001:2004-standard environmental management system and has had an ISO 9001:2008-compliant quality management system for the last nine years.

Energy efficiency measures are applied throughout all stages of the production process, for example with a tunnel kiln heat recovery system. We also have other projects to protect the environment. For the fifth consecutive year, and with the support of the company and the Novi Pazar region forestry sector, Roca employees tended the Roca Bulgaria Forest, where they planted around 1,000 trees, all of different local species.

Thanks to our ongoing work implementing “green” policies, we at Roca show how a company’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally-friendly business helps secure a better future for the planet.

Roca launches a new communications campaign for the In-Tank Meridian WC to promote this unique technology that represents a revolution in design, water savings and innovation in the bathroom space.

With this as the goal, we created a communications campaign in different media, both offline and online, as well as point of sale support materials aimed at all kinds of publics, be they professionals or individuals.

Under the slogan “In-Tank. The first WC to have the cistern incorporated within it”, Roca explains the properties of this revolutionary product, including its ease of installation: as it integrates the cistern and the flush plate in the WC itself, it does not need these two elements to be installed. What’s more, it incorporates Soft Air® technology,

which ensures optimal flushing with an air pump that pushes the tank water to achieve a dual 4.5/3-litre flush.

Thanks to In-Tank’s innovative aesthetics with compact, striking lines, and its simplicity, which avoids the visual impact of an external cistern, Roca sets new trends in the classical WC concept and taking a further step on the road to the future.
