Vietnamese Lunar New Year Tet – St. Philippe Phan van Minh Catholic Church at the Fairgrounds 2013 By Ricky Ly - tastychomps.com

The Vietnamese New Year, also known as Tet or Tet Nguyên Dán, is one of my favorite times of the year. This is the time when friends and fam-ily from throughout the Central Florida community come out and enjoy local cultural performances put on by fellow members of the community as well as more famous Vietnamese singers and performers, and also enjoy the wonderful home made Vietnamese food that you would normally not find at the local restaurants.

As the Vietnamese New Year is based on the Lunar new year cal-endar, similar to the Chinese New Year, the actual date changes each year depending on the moon cycles. This year it falls on the night of

Sunday February 10th and is the start of the year of the Snake. To avoid stepping on each others’ toes, the local Vietnamese community organizations, temples, and churches try to sparse out their festivities so that they would be on different dates.

This St. Philippe Phan van Minh Catholic Church hosted their Viet-namese lunar new year festivities at the Central Florida Fairgrounds on Jan 26 & 27. I took a visit and captured some photos of the scenes at the fairgrounds. The proceeds of the sales went to the church organi-zation in supporting its works in the community.

Vietnamese Lunar New Yearin Orlando

The Vietnamese Community of Cen-tral Florida hosted the Vietnamese lunar new year festivities at the Central Florida Fairgrounds on Feb 16 & 17. The event started with a parade of the VCCF led by the soldiers. Special guests City of Orlando Commissioner Patty Sheehan and Multicultural Affairs Director of City of Orlando Luis Martinez joined the ribbon cutting ceremony with the Vietnamese Community of Central Florida president and guests.

At the Festival, the attendees not only had a chance to taste different Viet-namese food, but also to enjoy many great performances like Lion Dancing, musicial and singing performances and Vietnamese Martial Arts demonstration by Vovinam. The Vietnamese Tet Fes-tival helped the young Vietnamese to understand its culture, people and root.

The 17th annual Miss Vietnam Florida Pageant

The Miss Vietnam Florida Scholarship Pag-eant is an annual event hosted by the Vietnam-ese Community of Central Florida. The pageant has been a gem for the community bringing in thousands of spectators from all around the state. Since 1997, it has been a showcase of beauty, talent, and tradition with a blend of Vietnamese and American culture. This year marked the 17th annual Miss Vietnam Florida Pageant held on Sunday February 17th, 2013 at the Central Florida Fairgrounds.

The purpose of the pageant is to empower young women to achieve their personal and pro-fessional goals, while providing a forum in which to express their opinions, talent, and intelligence. The Miss Vietnam Florida pageant provides an opportunity for contestants to gain additional life

experiences, develop performance related and other talents while working on issues of impor-tance to the community.

The Miss Vietnam Florida Scholarship Pag-eant is governed by the Vietnamese Commu-nity of Central Florida, the largest Vietnamese community in the state of Florida. They are a nonprofit organization whose goal is to raise awareness for social, economical, and political issues while providing a sense of community and family for the Vietnamese American who live in Greater Orlando area.

Twelve beautifully talented contestants from all around Florida competed for the prestigious title of Miss Vietnam Florida 2013. The pag-eant consisted of various competition segments

such as Ao Dai (Vietnamese Traditional dress), Evening Wear, General Questionnaire, Talent, Essay, and Top 5 Questionnaire for the Top 5 contestants.

In addition to the Royal Court titles there were four other titles which included Miss Congenial-ity, Miss Philanthropy, Miss Photogenic, and Miss Ao Dai.

All of the contestants received flowers cour-tesy of Florida Flowers and Orchids, a trophy, beauty products from Dillard’s at Altamonte Mall, a book titled “The Escapes” by Dr. Du Hua, and chocolates from Sweet Beginning Desserts. We would like to congratulate all the contestants especially the Miss Vietnam Florida 2013 Royal Court!

Chinese American Association of Central Florida (CAACF) hosts the Chinese New Year Celebration Dinner at Koy Wan Hibachi Buffet

The Chinese American Association of Central Florida picked Koy Wan Hibachi Buffet as the place to cater the Chinese New Year dinner this year. There is no better way to kick off the New Year together with a delicious all-you-can-eat din-ner. The celebration was joined by many past presidents including Lee Chow 周禮, C.T.Hsu 徐祖慈, Bruce Chai 翟懷慈 , Angie Chow 魏安琪, Agnes Chau 周曼宜, Gary King 金文德 and Pauline Ho 何美蓮. Members were glad to be able to talk and mingle with friends and relatives in a private din-ing room. Shally Wong, the president of CAACF briefly overviewed the growth of the Chinese School of CAACF, CAACF Dance Troupe and

CHARGE Dragon Boat Team during her term. “I am honored to be able to volunteer my time in an organization which has served the Chinese community for more than 43 years,” said Shally Wong. She also thanked the dedicated board of directors including VP Susan Hoeh, VP Joanna Kiang, Secretary John Chung, Treasuere Eppie Bang, Director Sandra Chen, Director Tsuey Ing Lavender and Director Raymond Lam for the team work. She encouraged the members to continue participating in the future events and consider this organization as a resource to build a better community. A new membership benefit program was also re-introduced to better serve

their members. Complete list of benefits can be found at www.orlandochinese.org. Close to 50 gifts were donated by past presidents, board of directors, local businesses and supporters for drawing that night.

CAACF is a non-profit organization found-ed in 1969 in Orlando, Florida. The mission of Chinese American Association of Central Florida (CAACF) is to promote the Chinese language education and preserve the Chinese culture in the central Florida region. The Chinese School and The Dance Troupe were established in 1980, and the CHARGE Dragon Boat team was launched in 2010.

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa recently com-pleted a $75 million expansion, making it the world’s sixth-larg-est casino, based on gaming positions or number of seats at a table or slot. For the sixth year in a row, the American Automo-bile Association (AAA) has awarded this 250-luxury room hotel its prestigious Four Diamond rating. Guests can enjoy a new pool area and restaurants including the Hard Rock Cafe Tampa, part of Hard Rock’s 138 globally recognized rock ‘n’ roll themed restaurants, the award-winning Council Oak Steaks & Seafood Restaurant, and Rise Kitchen & Bakery™, which features freshly baked breads and entrees made with fresh ingredients.

In addition to the above establishments, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa created its very first gaming com-plex, Jubao Palace including a mix of 17 tables for most popular Asian games together with a 15-seat, quick service noodle bar featuring authentic Asian cuisine such as Beef Pho, Roast Duck, Fried Dumplings, and Char Siu Pork. Feng Shui was used in the space design. Noodles are long, elongated and have move-ment which is a reference to prosperity. The bar counter and soffit above it are soft and have a shapely line that is a nod to the shape of noodles. Eight pendants within the soffit represent good luck. The change in height within the soffit is aspirational, reaching up to the sky. The restaurant is located near the Hi Limit gaming area right off the main casino floor.

Lunar New Year is the most important festival celebrated in Asia. Tampa Bay Chinese New Year

SACA (Suncoast Association of Chinese-Americans) and CAAT (Chinese American As-sociation of Tampa), two of Tampa Bay Chinese associations jointly hosted the 2013 Chinese New Year Celebration at Largo Central Park, 101 Central Park Drive, Largo on Saturday, Feb 2 with estimated 2,000 audiences.

The Mayor of Largo, Patricia Gerard, was one of many key speakers at this year’s celebration.

The park was lined with red lanterns through-out. A Chinese Pagoda Gate with two miniature lions stood in the front of the entrance. It was truly a cultural experience to walk through the park and be ‘wowed’ by the Asian decors. Two 30 feet long dragons were also on display at the park so the children can pose for memorable photos.

The golden dragon danced as the opening act of the celebration. Each dragon requires ten persons to flow and dance through the crowd and onto the staging area. Children followed the dragon as a train when it danced through the crowded park. The heavy toned drum and the cymbals added to beat of excitement for the dragon.

400 children received the traditional Chinese ‘Red [money] Envelope’ as a gift. Artists from all over Asia were at the event demonstrating their talent by painting name scrolls, charms, and water color paintings. Musicians were also ap-plauded for their outstanding performance of the traditional Chinese instruments.

It was a delightful experience to watch the folk

dancers dressed in soft pink and white gowns waving their hand fans flowing across the stage to the traditional Chinese music. The kung fu demonstration was exciting to see with their weapons swinging, fist flying in different martial art styles. The Emcees were professional and humorous. Most audience stayed for the four hour duration.

Largo Central Park’s Mini-Train was also open for parents and children to ride around the park. It was absolutely wonderful experience to spend a beautiful, sunny day at Largo Central Park in Largo, Florida to celebrate the beginning of Chinese Snake year!

As well as a trial of strength in combat and as a Shinto ritual, Sumo was an important ritual at the imperial court. Representatives of each prov-ince were ordered to attend the contest at the court and fight. The contest was known as Sumai no Sechie 相撲の節会 or “Sumai party”.Over the rest of Japanese recorded history, Sumo’s popu-larity has changed according to the whims of its rulers and the need for its use as a training tool in periods of civil strife. The form of wrestling com-bat probably changed gradually into one where the main aim in victory was to throw one’s oppo-nent. The concept of pushing one’s opponent out of a defined area came some time later.

Also, it is believed that a ring, defined as something other than simply the area given to the wrestlers by spectators, came into being in the 16th century as a result of a tournament orga-nized by the then principal warlord in Japan, Oda Nobunaga 織田信長. At this point wrestlers would wear loose loincloths, rather than the much stiffer Mawashi of today. During the Edo period, wres-tlers would wear a fringed Kesho-mawashi dur-ing the bout, whereas today these are worn only

during pre-tournament rituals. Most of the rest of the current forms within the sport developed in the early Edo period.

Professional Sumo (Ozumo大相撲) can trace its roots back to the Edo period in Japan as a form of sporting entertainment. The original wrestlers were probably Samurai 侍, often Ronin浪人, who needed to find an alternative form of income. Current professional Sumo tournaments be-gan in the Tomioka Hachiman Shrine 富岡八幡宮 in 1684, and then were held in the Ekō-in 回向院 in the Edo period. They have been held in the RyōgokuKokugikan 両国国技館 since 1909, though the KuramaeKokugikan 蔵前国技館 had been used for the tournaments in the post-war years until 1984. Nations adjacent to Japan, sharing many cultural traditions, also feature styles of traditional wrestling that bear resem-blance to Sumo.

Most people love a trip down memory lane. They yearn for the past with a tinge of pleasure, be-cause they believe the past is better than the present. However, time will pass and things will change. In a blink of an eye, everything will be different. Although the setting sun might be immeasurably sweet, dusk is only too near. Therefore, if we want a better tomorrow, we should look forward to the future and broaden our horizons without indulging in retrospection.

Once, there was a puppy that ran in circles all day long chasing its own tail. A big dog walked by and was puzzled by what it saw. It asked the puppy what it was doing. The puppy replied, “Haven’t you heard that a dog’s happiness is in its tail? By chasing it, I am going after happiness. Don’t you want happiness in your life?” The big dog said, “All I know is that I just walk forward with all my might, happiness follows immediately behind.” Therefore, we must live in hope and not in our memories, for the future is better than the past; it holds immeasurable potential!

In life, everyone experiences difficulty as well as satisfaction. When things are going well, we must not be overly complacent. When faced with adversity, we must forbear whatever comes our way. We must bear down and weather the storm. Even if we have failed miserably in the past, we must not be discouraged, because past failures are the best lessons for future success. If we learn from our mistakes and make good use of our experiences, we will be on our way to a better tomorrow.

According to the Buddhist notion of cause and effect in the three time periods -- the past, present, and future – life is not limited to just one term. Because of the past, we have the present. Because of the present, we have the future. Because of the future, we have the three time periods of the past, the present, and the future. Because of the three time periods, we have hope; the future is yet to come. As long as we are hopeful, our lives will be better tomorrow.

It is hard to judge whether one’s life is a success or a failure at any given time. We can be unsuc-cessful in how we handle affairs, but we should try not to fail in how we conduct ourselves. We can fail in our past, but not our future. No matter how brilliant we once might have been, it does not guarantee future success. We cannot take the past as an affirmation of the present and the future. Past glory will always be in the past and may not carry into the present or the future. We must thus work hard for the present. However, the “present” will become the “past” as soon as it arrives. The next moment

will become the “present.” Therefore, we should not be overly pleased with what we have achieved. Our actions must adhere to the principles of beauty, trueness, and goodness. Our future will definitely be better if we can continuously improve and adapt ourselves.

If we want to progress in life, we should not limit ourselves. We should strive for advancement and breakthroughs without indulging ourselves in past accomplishments. Nobody can help us if we refuse to let go and only live for the past. It does not matter what our achievements might have been in the past. It does not matter how popular we were yesterday. They are occurrences of the past. We should concentrate our efforts on the present for the sake of having a brighter future. Without question, the future is much better than the past. It is full of endless possibilities!
