RESEARCH PROJECTS

Charting Hong Kong's Public Perception of SocialWelfare

" WONG Ka Ying Timothy z WONG Chack Kie(Social Work)

 1 March 1998

 CUHK Research Committee Funding

This study attempts to employ James Midgley’sconceptual framework of social welfare tosystematically examine Hong Kong people’s attitudestoward the condition of social welfare in Hong Kongby means of telephone survey. A similar study wasfirst undertaken in last October. This is a continuedstudy with an aim to chart the changes since then. Italso wants to remedy some of the weaknesses foundin the previous study, such as failing to ask the publicto report their class mobility over the past decade.Without such knowledge, it is difficult to makeaccurate causal inference regarding public perceptionof social welfare and class position. The study is

significant in both theoretical and policy terms.Theoretically, it operationalizes an old concept byusing Midgely’s new conceptual framework, extending the concept to compose the control ofsocial problems, the fulfillment of social needs, andthe maximization of social opportunities. In policyterms, it provides subjective social indicators for thepublic and the government policy makers to assessthe state of social welfare in Hong Kong.(SS97046)

Chinese Ancient Texts Database

" CHEN Fong Ching z LAU Din Cheuk z JAOTsung I z HO Che Wah (Chinese Language &Literature)

 15 March 1998

Central Allocation Scheme - Group Research

The CHinese ANcient Text (CHANT) databaseproject was started in 1988, and the original scopewas to build an electronic database of all pre-220 A.D.traditional Chinese tests. It has since grown into along-term effort for systematically absorbing allChinese ancient texts spanning the two millenniafrom 1500 BC to about 600 AD into one single, comprehensive database, which will, when completed, become a major tool for the entire field of the studyof ancient China. This project has been awarded a group research grantof HK$3M for the triennium 1998-2001, and itsrevised objectives are as follows:-(1) To complete publications related to the database

already built, i.e.(a) to complete the 65-volume concordance

series of pre-220 A.D. texts, and topublish concordances of selected texts ofthe 220-589 A.D. period;

(b) to pursue publication on electronic mediaof the database of selected pre-589 A.D.texts; and

(c) to complete publication on electronicmedia of the database of jianbo and jiagutexts.

(2) To carry out software development including(a) scanning and processing of the images of

excavated texts; and(b) integration of diverse database into a

unified system.(3) To do preliminary studies and then work on a

database of bronze inscriptions.(4) To release the Database of Ancient Chinese

Texts constructed on Internet.(AL97036)

Research Institute for the Humanities

Research Institutes 606

The Research Institute for the Humanities (R.I.H.) is restructured and now adopts an open-door policy. The aimis to provide a stimulating environment for exchanging ideas on academic and research interests in thehumanities; and for bringing into focus the future research directions. All humanities research projects fundedby University Grants Council/Research Grants Council and other grants will be housed under the R.I.H. In otherwords, all members in the Faculty of Arts are invited to join. The R.I.H. will provide clerical and logisticsupport, serving as a clearing house of research information and will organize events such as workshops, lectures,brain-storming sessions for possible research topics.
