A school is sometimes described as a whole which isgreater than the sum of its parts. Although this is acliché, a reading of this edition of the Ashteadiangives it a ring of truth. In a relatively small numberof pages, pupils and staff have given accounts of themany events, clubs, competitions and activities whichare so much a part of the life of Freemen’s. Alongsidethe traditional reports of the music, drama, art, sportsand House activities are accounts of various trips andvisits which are an important part of each pupil’sexperience from Form One right through to theUpper Six.

I hope you find this year’s edition of the Ashteadianenjoyable reading; I hope it will inspire pupils to geteven more involved in the many ways in which theday to day academic curriculum is enriched asdescribed in the pages that follow.

I would like to thank all of the contributors to thisyear’s Ashteadian, its editorial board led by Mr MikeHolland, the Marketing and Admissions Manager, and finally, I thank the staff without whosecommitment to the enrichment programme little ofwhat follows would be possible.

I am sure you will be as impressed and proud as I amby everything the pupils achieve at Freemen’s.

Atque valeteThe Academic year 2011-12 saw a larger than usual number ofthe teaching staff leave to move to pastures new, promotion andretirement. At the end of the Autumn term Rev. DanielRutherford left to take up a new post as Chaplain and teacher atStrathallan School in Scotland. Rev. Rutherford was a muchloved teacher of Religious Education, Head of Year in the JuniorSchool and, of course, Chaplain, with a ministry to the wholeSchool. Daniel’s work extended beyond the children and theclassroom; he was a wise counsellor and friend to many parentsof the School at times of family crisis and bereavement – and, necessarily, much of his work in this area was unseen. DanielRutherford looked forward to returning to a full boardingschool, where his teaching career started before he wasordained. Early reports are that Daniel Rutherford, his wife andhis two children who attended Freemen’s have settled in wellnorth of the border.

At Christmas 2011, we were also sorry to see the departure ofMr Tim Rees, the Head of Art. Mr Rees had not been with theSchool for very long, but during his relatively short time atFreemen’s, he changed a number of aspects of the teaching ofArt at the School. There are many pupils in the School whowere introduced to ceramics by Mr Rees and there are severalworks still on display around the School which are the result ofhis inspiration in the classroom. Mr Rees has moved to StLeonards-Mayfield School in Sussex.

At the end of the academic year, the School bade farewell MrsPenny Brooks and Mrs Rachel Sullivan, both of the BusinessStudies and Economics department. Mrs Brooks’ first contactwith the School was as a parent, and when the School wastrying to establish an Economics and Business Studiesdepartment in 2003, she took on the role. For a number of years,Mrs Brooks also ran the Young Enterprise Scheme in Lower 5,and was an effective and respected Sixth Form tutor. TheEconomics and Business Studies department under herleadership always strove to broaden the opportunities forstudents outside the classroom with trips to local and not solocal businesses, and visits to the School by important figuresfrom the world of business and finance. Mrs Brooks hasdecided to carry on teaching part-time but is enjoying layingdown the responsibility of running such a large and successfuldepartment. Mrs Sullivan, who came to CLFS in 2004 as a part-time teacher, worked alongside Mrs Brooks and withconsiderable success; the increase in Sixth Form numbers led tothe appointment of a third member of the department –fortunately, in the circumstances. Mrs Sullivan has moved to asimilar post closer to home at Reeds School in Cobham.

Mr AndrewMcCleave, who came to Freemen’s in 2009, left atthe end of the academic year to take up the post of Director ofStudies at Lady Eleanor Holles School. Mr McCleave wasalready Head of Geography when he joined the staff atFreemen’s and brought with him breadth of experience inrunning a department and a number of other initiatives, including assessment for learning. Mr McCleave’s new school isfortunate to have appointed a man of such ability andexperience. It has been good to keep up with news of the familyfromMr McCleave’s children who have remained at Freemen’s.

Another member of staff who secured promotion in 2012 wasMr Ian Knowles who left to take up his appointment as Head of

Sixth Form at Churcher’s College, Hampshire. Mr Knowlescame to Freemen’s in 2001 and will be hugely missed by a verylarge number of pupils right across the age range, as he wasalso Housemaster of Hale. His department, Biology, is thrivingat the School and during his time here Mr Knowles was also amuch loved and respected Sixth Form tutor, a successful rugbycoach and many other things besides, including what could bea second career as a guitarist! Churcher’s are fortunate to haveappointed someone of his calibre.

Mrs Sarah Mitchell was the second of the Heads of House wholeft this year, to retire. Gresham has lost her enormous energyand enthusiasm for the House and the various Housecompetitions. Mrs Mitchell was also a highly successful Head ofChemistry, one of the leading departments in the School. Shewas a respected Sixth Form tutor whose shoes will also be hardto fill after twenty two years’ service to the School.

The Physics department also lost one of its long-servingmembers of staff with the departure of Mrs Jane Hawkes. MrsHawkes was a classroom practitioner of the highest order and, again, has made a hugely important contribution to the successof Physics during her twenty two years at the School. We hopethat Jane will be able to keep in touch with the School as herdaughter moves through to her GCSEs next year – so ‘aurevoir’ rather than ‘goodbye’.

The largest department in the School is the Mathematicsdepartment, led over the last eighteen years by Mrs RosemaryHobbs, who retired at the end of the year. The department isnot just large, but also very successful in terms of results andthe ever-increasing numbers who take Mathematics in the SixthForm. Mrs Hobbs has also been an effective and muchrespected Sixth Form tutor, particularly so, because she has hadso much contact with the Sixth Form in the classroom. We wishher every happiness for the future.

Ms Justine Desouches, who came to Freemen’s in 2007,relocated to Barcelona at the end of the academic year. MsDesouches, as well as her teaching duties, helped out in thegirls’ boarding house and was very committed to this andpopular with the girls. She rose to the challenge of running theFrench department, and perhaps her biggest triumph wasgetting the French exchange off the ground.

Mr Bill Deighton, the Head of Boys’ Games and PE, retired atthe end of the last academic year. Mr Deighton, or Bill, as we allknow him, came to Freemen’s in 1981. Through the interveningthirty one years, he has been committed heart and soul to hisdepartment, to the rugby, but also to the whole School. MrDeighton has given an entire career to the many generations ofFreemen’s pupils, and former pupils, when they visit theSchool, always ask after Mr Deighton. We wish him happinessin retirement and hope that he will succumb to the temptationto visit the School on the occasional Saturday morning to seehow the rugby teams are faring.

    Ad multos annos.

    Philip MacDonald
