What is an ASHRAE Technical Committee (TC)?

• Group of volunteers who provide the Society with expertise in a specific field or subject.

• TCs start as a Task Group (TG) when a new technical area develops that is relevant to the Society.

• TCs are typically long-lived committees.

• TCs are by far the most numerous of the various technical groups within ASHRAE.

ASHRAE Research is Initiated & Monitored by TCs/TGs/TRGs/MTGs

• Identify needed research

• Develop research work statements

• Evaluate proposals

• Monitor the research project

• Ensure results are disseminated to the Society

Many TCs & TGs Participate in the Standards Process in ASHRAE

• Primary responsibility for document development lies with Standards Project Committees (SPCs)

• TCs provide liaisons to these committees

• TC members can serve on Standards Project Committees

• TCs may be asked to provide concurrence with non-ASHRAE standards (such as those developed by ASTM or ISO)

Handbook Chapters are written by the TCs, TGs, & TRGs

• TCs, TGs & TRGs are assigned chapters consistent with their expertise/scope

• Most TCs & TGs have standing handbook subcommittees to write and revise chapters; a TC may be responsible for multiple chapters.

• TC responsibility for chapters is noted in the Handbooks (as are major content contributors)

TCs & TGs Develop Programs for the ASHRAE Conferences

• The committees can suggest topics and sessions for presentation

• Technical & Conference Paper Sessions (Symposia)– Paper sessions on specific topics that are published in

ASHRAE Transactions• usually initiated by TCs or TGs• reviewers are usually from TCs, TGs, or TRGs

• The program sessions at the winter and summer meetings could not happen without the TCs!

How to get involved in TCs, TGs, TRGs, and MTGs

• Cruise the ASHRAE home page and see what the TCs are doing– TC scopes available for all– Many TCs have homepages– E-mail the secretary or chair about your interest– Can apply for provisional corresponding membership directly

with ASHRAE
