Ashrae SPC 222 - Standard Method of Test for Electrical Power Drive Systemso Met for fifth time this past Sunday in Chicagoo PC approval of responses to public review comments targeted for June

2018o PC vote for publication targeted for September 2018

AMCA 208 – Calculation of Fan Energy Indexo Still not approved but any day

NEMA MG1 new section for air over motor test method investigationo Will show 3 options for temperature stabilizationo 0.25 hp – about 5hp officially

AHRI 1210/1211 has now updated their VSD certification fileo Now available in Excel online for free instead of the old PDF only formato Four brands have certifications to date and more coming.

B. Research: Rick Heiden

RTAR/WS Status

Development of Method of Test for Motor Component Thermal Conductivity (RTAR 1793)

o Research liaison suggested continuing as long as good faith efforts have been made for cosponsoring.

Need confirmed correspondence with outside bodies for potential co-funding (NEMA, UL, AHRI, DOE, IEEE)

Straw poll on continued committee co-sponsorship? – Yes, MOTION for TC1.11 to co-sponsor as outlined by Rick’s summation passed 6-0-0.

Any additional members want to volunteer to be on Proposal Evaluation Subcommittee and/or Project Evaluation Subcommittee? – Dan Delaney will participate with project monitoring subcommittee.

o Work statement will be circulated for letter ballot to TC 8.2, TC 8.1 and TC1.11 and research liaison

o Target submission to RAC in March

RTAR 1768 - Assessment of HVAC Equipment Idle Power Consumption as a Percentage of Built Environment Energy Load (5 – 1500 kW)

o Per Long Beach plan to withdraw for lack of interest/support

Idea backlog

Research to answer the question, what constitutes the “right” test conditions for characterizing motor / drive test points.  Was proposed as AHRI research project but rejected.  Kezhen to forward on background info.

Power quality trends by region and technology (surges, sags, etc) – currently no interest within the TC

Page 6: ASHRAE TC/TG/TRG MOPtc0111.ashraetcs.org/documents/meeting-information/… · Web viewRTAR 1768 - Assessment of HVAC Equipment Idle Power Consumption as a Percentage of Built Environment

Data Center trends (i.e. 600 VDC ABB case) maybe a seminar – yes, TC interest as a future program

Effects of motor type on VFD efficiency.  How does the MOT for VFD need to be changed for motors other than asynchronous? – yes, TC interest, but go both ways, VFD to motor and motor to VFD

Survey available literature and databases used for motor-VFD performance modeling in HVAC design – currently no interest within the TC

o Motor-VFD performance rating updates for DOE MotorMaster Plus Database – currently no interest within the TC

Completed Projects Sponsored by TC 1.11RP-1078 -- Early Detection of Insulation Degradation in Low Voltage Motors RP-1076 -- Diagnostic Test and Analytical Methods for Resolving Fan/Motor Vibration Problems in Air-Conditioning UnitsRP-1095 -- Measurements of Electrical Power Inputs to Variable Speed Motors and Their Solid State Power Converters: Phase IRP-667 -- Measurements of Electrical Power Inputs to Variable Speed Motors and Their Solid State ConvertersRP-685 -- Test and Analysis Methods for Resolving Fan/Motor Vibration Problems in Air-Conditioning UnitsRP-770 -- Measurement of Electrical Power Inputs to Variable Speed Motors and Their Solid State Power Converters

Ideas and Discussion

New motor technology advancement seminar – planning seminar now for Atlantao Paul Lin agreed to chairo Possible title: Advances in HVAC Motors and Motor Controls

Motor types overview – Ken Fonstad agreed to speak Fan or pump or compressor application – Rick (compressor) &

Chandra (PM motor) & Terry (pump guy) to find two additional speakers, also possible high speed switched reluctance motors from Grant

Test standards for different type of motors – Dan Delany (Regal) agreed to speak

SPC 222 now taking over MOT for AHRI 1210 – potential for Kansas City if MOT ready

o 1st draft (abstract) of seminar target by Chicagoo Potential chair – Ken Fonstad with potential speakers: Tom, Armin, public

university customer (found by Paul), Bill to find another speaker (Terry to check with Bill)

o Proposed forum as a method for collecting information to help with the standard was deemed not needed by discussion at Long Beach

High rotor pole switched reluctance motor topic idea potentially for Atlanta. Chandra to discuss with Paul Lin more after the meeting.
