1 Well, it’s officially my favorite season of the year……..football season. Friday night high school lights, Saturday college tailgates and road trips, and lazy Sundays on the couch with the NFL……I love it. September also brings the start of hunting season which also brings a smile to many of our faces (but maybe not so much from our significant others). There are a lot of activities that keep us busy this time of year, thus sometimes it’s hard to prioritize what we can and cannot attend. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen with your plans to attend ASHRAE this month! We had 45+ folks at last month’s meeting which was definitely an improvement from our normal average, but still not where I want us to be. We also have our first Research Promotion event coming up on November 6th: sporting clays at Capital City Clays. This is always a fun event, so be sure to mark it on your calendar and start forming your teams. Thank you to Andrew Turner for leading up the event this year. This month, we are honored to have past Society-president, ASHRAE Fellow, and ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. William P. Bahnfleth, Ph.D., P.E., who will present on HVAC and Airborne Infectious Diseases. This is a topic that should be front-and-center when designing healthcare facilities, as our first duty as engineers is to protect the public. Dr. Bahnfleth is Professor and Director of the Indoor Environment Center in the Department of Architectural Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in University Park, PA. This month's meeting will be a lunch meeting at County Line on the LAKE (2222 Location). I hope you come and enjoy. -Steve FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK AUSTIN, TEXAS CHAPTER est. 1956 ashrae.org ausƟnashrae.weebly.com September 2017 Steve Hansen Chapter President UPCOMING EVENTS September MeeƟng Sept 21 | Lunch County Line 2222 (Lake) 11:15AM October MeeƟng RefrigeraƟon Tour AMY’S ICE CREAMS Oct 19 , 10AM Phil’s Icehouse for Lunch Inside this issue: Programs 2 Membership Promo 4 YEA 5 Student Activities 6 Treasurer’s Report 7 BOG Meeting Minutes 8 Ocer Roster 9 Learning Institute 10 History 11

Main Topic Overview:  Concern regarding the risk of hospital acquired infections and the effect of the built

environment on epidemics of drug‐resistant diseases is increasing. The well‐educated designer and owner needs to

understand the mechanisms by which infectious disease is transmitted indoors, the extent to which HVAC system

characteristics affect probability of infection, available means for controlling risk with demonstrated effectiveness.

These topics are presented and discussed using the ASHRAE Board of Directors‐approved Position Document Air‐

borne Infectious Diseases as a framework. Pertinent scientific knowledge about modes of disease transmission is

reviewed, its practical implications for control are discussed, and the three HVAC‐related control methods identi‐

fied by the Position Document: ventilation, particulate filtration, and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, are present‐

ed and compared. General recommendations for reducing risk are provided and knowledge gaps that need to be

filled are identified.

SEPTEMBER This month was our first official newsletter issue. President Driggers encouraged those members that he did not know to attend meetings so he could meet them. He also introduced himself a little by stating that he had been in the industry for 24 years, first in Dallas and now in Austin. His goals for the upcoming year in ASHRAE were twofold: 1) to increase our Chapter Membership by at least 30 new members, and 2) to provide our members with informative, technical programs that they might not receive at a typical Lunch & Learn. Our meeting was a lunch meeting held on September 15th at Dave & Buster’s off MoPac north. The meeting was a great panel discussion with local Test & Balance experts detailing everything the membership needed to know about a successful project. The panel was comprised of the following individuals: Mike Huber, of Air Technologies, Inc.; Tyler Lewis of TAB Technologies; Gaylon Richardson of Engineered Air Balance Co., Inc.; and, Sonny Vidovic of Energy Testing and Balance, Inc. There were several updates by various Officers and Committee Chairs. Ryan Burke provided meeting notes from the August 18th BOG meeting. Steve Hansen published an updated calendar for proposed topics for all meetings for the year. Gayle Davis was excited to start a new year as Student Activities Chair, and he indicated that joining him on the Student Activities Committee are Jeff Miller (Co-Chair, Texas Air Products), and Alicia Reich the K-12/STEM Champion (Schneider-Electric). Our YEA group had a July Lake Party. Carrie Anne Crawford provide a Treasurer’s update. Ryan Williams’ report indicated that the Chapter was sitting at 362 active members and that the Chapter goal for next year is 30 new members net. He indicated that several membership promotion nights were being scheduled with one in December and another in March. This author provided a written article on “The ASHRAE Handbook”, and a vintage Fedders Manufacturing Co. - ad from the January 1935 issue of Heating Piping and Air Conditioning Magazine, excerpted from HPAC Engineering, Edited by Ashley M. Doles, 04- 29-2015. OCTOBER President Driggers began the month by thanking everyone who attended the September meeting at Dave & Busters, and particularly the participants in our Test and Balance panel discussions. He also announced several events that the Chapter was planning including what is becoming a new tradition for the Chapter, a brewery tour. We eventually held our monthly meeting in the Oskar Blues Brewery, 10420 Metric Blvd., on October 20th. Most of us like cold beer, food and education on the refrigeration used to brew beer; and, we learned a lot about Oskar’s beer. The tours were at 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. with live music at 8:00 p.m. A great deal of good socializing occurred. Additionally, it was announced that the annual ASHRAE Skeet Shoot fundraiser to support ASHRAE research was to be held on Friday, October 28. At the time of the meeting, there were fifteen teams signed up with three each from Mechanical Reps and Robert Madden Industries; and a team each from: Joe Fly, TD Industries, MicroMet, Oslin Nation, Texas Air Products, Texas Air Systems, Johnson Controls, Mitsubishi, and M&M. The newsletter also contained other reports such as: Treasurer Carrie Anne Crawford’s report which indicated our Chapter was doing well with $33,095 in the bank between checking and savings; an announcement of another YEA event to be held at the Peter Pan Mini Golf course on Barton Springs; Secretary Ryan Burke’s BOG meeting minutes; and, a Historian report as well as a first article on Women in Engineering (Part 01) by yours truly. Our Grassroots Government Activities Chair, Mr. Jon-Erik Johnson announced that his hard work and efforts had resulted in an ASHRAE Day on the Hill Event, scheduled for February 21, 2017, at the Texas State Legislature. He encouraged everyone to set up a meeting with either your senator or representative to discuss STEM or energy issues to coincide with this event. He urged the Chapter to demonstrate a great presence and interest by all ASHRAE professionals as the 2017 Texas Legislature session begins to tackle issues. Most members now regularly go to the local website to obtain their news as well as receiving a newsletter.

NOVEMBER The November newsletter was released via email with President Driggers indicating we were to be thankful for all things like our families, our health, and the communities in which we live and work. He also stated we should be thankful that the long bitter election season was finally concluded. Mr. Driggers thanked Andrew Turner (Mechanical Reps) for putting together a successful Sporting Clays tournament last month. As a result of his committees efforts we had seventeen teams participate and raised over $2,000 for ASHRAE Research. He also acknowledged the hard work of Greg Lockhart (Climatec) for the upcoming Top Golf Tournament for December. President Driggers also thanked the new members who have signed up for ASHRAE and also to those that have renewed or reinstated their membership. The November meeting for the Austin Chapter of ASHRAE was held at lunch at Dave & Busters on November 17th. Lunch meetings are becoming more prevalent as an alternate to evening meetings not to mention that it is more difficult booking meeting rooms in the evening during the holiday season. The program was “IT Equipment Design Evolution & Data Center Operation Using ASHRAE’s Guidelines”. The speaker was Don Beaty who started DLB Associates Consulting Engineers in 1980. DLB’s global experience included over 4,000 MW of critical IT power, data center campuses that covered over 4,500 ACRES and thousands of mission critical projects with a combined raised floor (white space) area of over 16 MILLION square feet. DLB have provided design, commissioning and operations support services for a wide variety of large and small data center clients including hyperscale. Don was an ASHRAE Fellow, an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, and served in leadership positions on ASHRAE committees on energy, equipment performance, and data centers. He was the co-founder and first chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee TC 9.9 (Mission Critical Facilities, Technology Spaces and Electronic Equipment) and, was a major contributor to over 12 data center books. His topic was about IT manufacturers who are responding to customer demands that IT equipment have lower costs, be more energy efficient, provide more storage, and provide more computing capabilities, etc. All the work points toward changes in the IT hardware operation and that require operational changes to data centers to achieve the maximum efficiency within the ASHRAE environmental envelopes of relative humidity, temperature and IT equipment power. Various Committee Chairs provided reports within the Newsletter as well as at the meeting. The October BOG meeting minutes was provided by Secretary Ryan Burke, and our Membership Promotion Chair, Ryan Williams, announced that the Chapter had a strong showing in October with 18 new members and only 8 Cancellations for a Net Gain of 10 members. Continued efforts were being planned with a year to date summary thus far of 29 new members, 21 cancelled members and a net gain of 8 members overall. Treasurer Carrie Anne Crawford’s report indicated Chapter expenses were $16,811 vs. income of $14,852 for a month end balance of about a negative $1,959. The Chapter bank account still shows $8,180 but efforts will occur to offset this loss. And, there was a Historian report regarding Mary E. Pennington as a Women in Engineering (Part 02) by Randy Schrecengost, Chapter Historian. DECEMBER Similar to the November meeting, the Austin Chapter had a lunch meeting on December 15, 2016. President Driggers provided a special thanks to Greg Lockhart with Climatec and Bryan Haas with Brandt on a successful Top-Golf outing at the local facility on Novermber 30th. There were plenty of people involved who enjoyed the time with co-workers, clients, and fellow ASHRAE members for some friendly competition. This was the second annual "Top Golf Tournament" for the Austin ASHRAE Chapter to assist in raising money for ASHRAE Research. Each golfing bay held 6 teams, each team can be sponsored at $700.00. The winning team is shown at the right and is Team Johnson Controls!!! From Left to Right: Devin Carroll (TTG), Kevin Goetz (MEP Engineering), Ryan Burke (Johnson Controls), Jon Whittaker (MEP Engineering). A very special thank you went to Bryan Haas with Brandt for providing the new “Stanley Cup” style trophy for the winners. Past President, and Research Promotion Chair, David Bacorn expressed his sincere thanks for this effort toward Chapter Research and to all the sponsors who bought a booth for the event. The Team needing having the “Most Room for Improvement” is Team Mechanical Reps (lower right). From Left to Right: Daniel Nuckolls, Jason Palmer, Kaylyn Fenner, Matt Bruce, Elizabeth Slyziuk, Stuart Bloomquist, Breanne Hanson President Driggers also had a “shout out” to local ASHRAE member Alicia Reich with Schneider-Electric for organizing all the volunteer efforts for the Gingerbread Workshop at the Thinkery at Mueller Airport redevelopment. The President participated with this author (Randy Schrecengost) and Gayle Davis both with Stanley Consultants; and, with Vanessa Maryott with Siemens. He indicated that this effort of building Gingerbread Houses was unique in that he was watching us wire up LED gumdrop lights in series to battery packs to provide additional “awe” to the houses. He finished his review for the month with a great “Thank You” to all the new members who have signed up for ASHRAE; and, those that have renewed or reinstated their membership. Gayle Davis, Student Activities, stated that the UT Austin Student Branch was seeking speakers and sponsors for the spring meetings. He directed all those interested in becoming a speaker or sponsor at a student meeting to please contact himself or Troy Halliburton (Student Branch President at [email protected]) or Travis Potter (Student Branch Event Coordinator; [email protected]). All UT ASHRAE branch meetings were held on the 1st Thursday of each month in UT’s Ernest Cockrell Jr. Hall Room 7.208 from 6-7 pm. Picture at right is from the December 2016 meeting at the Texas Land & Cattle, Austin, TX. Membership Promotion Chair, Ryan Williams announced that the Chapter had nine new members in November, and Treasurer, Ms. Carrie Anne Crawford provided the Chapter’s bank balance was $4,372. She also indicated several suggestions regarding the Treasury accounts. She indicated that she had finally got “Quicken” up and running, but there is too “much chaos” with the square payments and debit card purchases. She moved to have all unnecessary BOG members removed from the Bank Account and allow have the Treasurer and the President involved. Additionally, due to electronic conflicts and delays with the current Wells Fargo account (unrelated to the massive unprofessional issues recently developed within that banking institution), she moved to change to a Chase Bank account. This was tabled for further discussion. Within the newsletter, there was another Historian report regarding Helen Innes Donnelly (1892 – 1935 at right) as a Women in Engineering (Part 03) by Randy Schrecengost, Chapter Historian.

Page 16: ASHRAE Newsletter - 2017.09 Austin Chapter · Keith McLaughlin & Jon‐Erik Johnson Welcome Back Membership Promotion Dave & Busters Dinner 5:00 pm ‐7:00 pm 8/17/2017 April 4/19/2018

Mrs. Donnelly was born on June 3, 1892 in Brooklyn, NY and was one of the first women to become interested in heating and ventilating engineering. She was accepted into the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers (ASHVE) in 1918 as an associate member, and became a full member in 1923. She combined study at the New York School of Heating and Ventilating and Pratt Institute with on the-job training, and earned recognition with her wide and successful experience in the heating field. JANUARY Our January 19th meeting was our typical Engineering Ethics meeting, and we held it at the County Line on the Hill Restaurant on Bee Cave Road. The Social Hour started at 5:00 p.m. and the regular meeting starting at 6:00 p.m. with the technical session covered by Randy Schrecengost (Stanley Consultants, Inx.) who provided a historical overview of the history of the Austin Chapter and how it evolved through the years. Once the meeting started and after the self-introductions, the business session began with President Driggers making various announcements and reminding everyone about the AHR EXPO and Winter meetings in Las Vegas at the end of January. He indicated that everyone should try to touch base with the equipment representatives before going and determine which ones would be hosting receptions in the evenings during the conference. These receptions are always great informal ways to talk to the manufacturers regarding the equipment that is being specified and getting more thorough understanding of the differences between the equipment. He also indicated that the members of the chapter are responsible for is the election of the Nominating Committee and need to provide their votes prior to leaving the meeting. The Nominating Committee will consist of five members that are in turn responsible for selecting the candidates for the upcoming Society year’s Officers and BOG along with making any suggested Chapter nominations for members to serve Society and Regional chairs. The list of the candidates for the 2017 Nominating Committee were: Andy Collier, Bill Klock, Cameron Labunski, Derrick VanWest, Jim Ruth, Joe Reyes, Justin Johnson, Mark Mikulin, Mike Hart, and Randy Schrecengost. After the business session, the speaker David Howell, PE, with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers shared information about the ethical requirements of being professional engineer. Mr. Howell was the Deputy Executive and of the TBPE and helped oversee all agency functions including Enforcement and Licensing activities. He was responsible for legislative reporting and implementation, rule development, budget and policy issues, and represents the Board at statewide and national functions. He was also the representative of the TBPE on several national taskforces and committees related to engineering licensure, public outreach and exams. He prepared and provided numerous Licensing and Ethics presentations (live, webinar based) to engineering organizations, universities and other groups. As usual, the attendance was high as all professional engineers need at least 1 hour of credit toward their licensing requirements on Ethics. This month the newsletter printed several informative articles regarding Chapter business. Gayle Davis, Student Activities, once again reminded everyone that the UT Austin Student Branch was always seeking speakers and sponsors for their campus meetings. All UT ASHRAE branch meetings were held on the 1st Thursday of each month in UT’s Ernest Cockrell Jr. Hall Room 7.208 from 6-7 pm. Treasurer, Carrie Anne Crawford provided an update on the state of the Treasury with a balance of $8,391. She also stated that there were ongoing reviews and interviews to find a professional bookkeeper to provide services to assist in keeping the Chapter finances within IRS requirements. Membership Promotion Chair, Ryan Williams announced that the Chapter had 3 more new members with 1 cancellation. Finally, the newsletter announced the start of a memorial scholarship fund endowment in the name of Professor Jerold Jones. Past President, Dr. Jones, was president in 1977 and taught Architectural and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas for 30 years. PP Jones was a great ASHRAE volunteer and conducted numerous research projects and supervised many graduate study in areas of HVAC and Energy Efficiency. He was one member on the original ASHRAE Standard 90 – 1975. Included in the newsletter this month was a Historian report updating the Chapter MBOs by Chapter Historian, Randy Schrecengost. MAY The May 18, 2017 meeting was once again at the County Line on the Hill. This was the last curtain call for out-going President David Driggers, and he spent some time thanking the Austin Chapter Officers, Board of Governors, and Committee members who served the past Society year. He stated that being President was the final effort over the past five years serving in various positions in the Austin Chapter, and he had made valuable contacts in our community including new clients with whom he had previously not worked. “ASHRAE truly allows anyone to network well if they put forth the effort”, he said. He mentioned that many of his business relationships developed into personal friendships both within and outside of his daily work life, and he looked forward to continuing all the friendships as he moves into new roles within the Chapter. “I appreciate the opportunity to serve the Austin members during this past year, and I am grateful to so many of you that have provided assistance, direction, and encouragement along the way”. President Driggers briefly reviewed some of the past year’s successes and encouraged everyone to provide all the necessary assistance to incoming President Elect Steve Hansen. He mentioned that the Austin Chapter received multiple awards this year during the Region VIII Chapter Regional Conference. These awards included most notably, the Region VIII Membership Round-em Up Award to Ryan Williams with Texas Air Systems. Ryan won the award as MP Chair and signed up 57 new members for ASHRAE. The Chapter then inducted the following members: Officers: President-Elect – Vanessa Freidberg (Siemens), Vice-President – Gayle Davis (Stanley Consultants, Inc.), Treasurer – Ryan Burke (JCI), and Secretary - Danny Richardson (EEACE): Board Of Governors: David Driggers (Past President); David Bacorn (HTS & Past President); Andy Collier (Texas Air Products & Past President); Stuart Bloomquist (Mechanical Reps, Inc.); and Larry Bloomquist (Mechanical Reps, Past President & Golden Gavel Award Winner).

ASHRAE Honors and Awards (Part 6)

We continue our H&A series from last month, and cover some of the remaining Category Three PERSONAL HONORS FOR GENERAL SOCIETY ACTIVITIES that are named after ASHRAE members. Lincoln Bouillon Award: This award recognizes a member who performs the most outstanding work in increasing the membership of the Society during the course of the year. • Recognition is in the form of a plaque, lapel pin, and transportation, if not

otherwise reimbursed by the Society • One awarded per year • Recommended by Membership Promotion Committee Lincoln Bouillon joined ASHVE in 1933 and was President of the Pacific Northwest Chapter in 1935. Following the formation of ASHRAE, he achieved a grade of Fellow in 1963 and held Society officer positions as a member of the Board of Directors from June 1962, Vice President for the 1964-65 fiscal year and President-elect for the 1965-66 year. Other activities in which he participated at the Society level included membership on the Program Committee, Technical Coordinating Committee, the Task Force for the New Psychometric Chart, the Charter and Bylaws Committee, and the Finance Committee. During his career, he emphasized membership promotion and felt that people making their living in air conditioning should become active participants in the Society. He spearheaded a membership campaign in 1965 that resulted in 105 new members for the Puget Sound Chapter, an increase of about 40% during a three-month period. The Lincoln Bouillon Award was established in 1967 to commemorate Mr. Bouillon’s effort in increasing Society membership. The award is given each year to a Society member who has achieved the most outstanding record in membership activities during the previous year. The award was initiated by Clarence F. Fleming, Membership Promotion Chairman, and approved by the Board of Directors in memory of President Lincoln Bouillon. An award is presented annually to the individual who performs the most outstanding work in increasing the membership of the Society. The award consists of a plaque and lapel pin. Lincoln Bouillon’s legacy to ASHRAE and the consulting engineering industry was related to a firm he founded in 1931, in Seattle, Washington. William J. Collins, Jr. RP Award: This award recognizes the Chapter RP Chair who excels in raising funds for ASHRAE's RP campaign during the course of the year. • Recognition is in the form of a plaque with a medallion, lapel pin, and

transportation, if not otherwise reimbursed by the Society • One awarded per year • Recommended by RP Committee William J. Collins, Jr. was born in Michigan and received a BSME Degree from Michigan Tech University in 1935. After working a few years, he joined Loeffler-Givens Supply Company of Oklahoma City as a consulting engineer in late 1937. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, where he served until 1946 as a Lt. Colonel Reserve. Mr. Collins returned to Oklahoma City and established Collins Engineering Associates and served as CEO and President for thirty years. Mr. Collins became a member of ASHVE in 1949, and served actively in the Society. He was the first editor of the Central Oklahoma Newsletter – The “Southwester”. He served as Chapter President in 1952, and introduced the ASHRAE diamond studded Past Presidents Pin, which continues today. By 1954, Society membership had grown to the point that it was difficult for the Society President to visit all

chapters. This was the beginning of regional meetings. Mr. Collins chaired the first of these meetings. The regional meeting concept was added to the Society Bylaws in 1952. In 1959, Mr. Collins was elected to a 3-year term on the Council of ASHAE. However, he was only able to serve part of one day, due to the merger of ASHAE and ASRE. That merger resulted in becoming ASHRAE. Mr. Collins was to serve 1-1/2 years on the ASHRAE Board of Directors as a RVC, was re-elected for a 3-year term, and was instrumental in the forming of Region VIII. From that point, he went on to become Society Vice President and then President. In 1971, Mr. Collins and others from Region VIII were able to develop the Golden Gavel Award. From this program, he developed the PAOE system, which has developed into a major portion of chapter operations planning. In 1972, Mr. Collins was instrumental in developing the Research Promotion program (now Resource Promotion) that today is successful in financing a great portion of the research that ASHRAE contacts. The Society Board of Directors, in an effort to show gratitude to Mr. Collins, created the William J. Collins Research Promotion Award. This award recognizes the outstanding Chapter Resource Chair in Society annually. Mr. Collins was a Presidential, Fellow and Life Member, as well as serving actively in Central Oklahoma Chapter. He also served as a Trustee on the Foundation Committee, and as Chair of the Journal and Insights Committee. Mr. Collins served as President of the Consulting Engineers Council of Oklahoma and was a Life Member. He was also a Life Member of the American Consulting Engineers Council and was a member of the Hall of Fame at Oklahoma State University. Mr. Collins received numerous ASHRAE awards including becoming a Fellow in 1966; the Distinguished Service Award in 1965; the Regional Award of Merit in 1978; the Andrew T. Boggs Service Award in 1993; the F. Paul Anderson Award in 1997; and, The Distinguished 50-Year Member Award in 1999. The William J. Collins, Jr. Research Promotion Award was established in 1985 to honor the chapter research promotion chairman who excels in raising funds for ASHRAE research. In June 2003, the name of the award was changed to the William J. Collins Resource Promotion Award. The award “recognizes the Chapter Resource Promotion Chairman who excels in raising funds for ASHRAE. The award consists of a plaque with a medallion and a lapel pin.” Homer Addams Award: This award recognizes a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project at a university that has graduate programs in the areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and has achieved a high standard of performance in this work. • Recognition is in the form of a $5,000 honorarium, plaque and lapel pin • One awarded per year • Recommended by Research Administration Committee • Deadline for nomination is December 15. • Submit nominations to ASHRAE Manager of Research and Technical Services The Homer Addams Award recognizes a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project. The award was authorized in June, 1956, and the first award was given in 1957. In June, 1959, the ASHRAE Board of Directors was pleased to receive a $10,000 endowment from Paul K. Addams, Homer Addams’ son. In 1991 the endowment of the award was increased to $25,000 and the honorarium was increased from $600 to $1500. The award also consists of a plaque and lapel pin. Mr. Addams was born in 1873, in Addamstown, Pennsylvania, a town established by his ancestors in the early 1700’s. He began his business career at the age of 15 after completion of preliminary education in public schools in the Addamstown area and in the Schuylkill Seminary. The desire for education was so great that he managed to combine business with study, taking business and engineering courses in his off hours.

His first job was as a helper, installing heating plants in Eastern Pennsylvania. In 1895, he joined Barber and Ross, a heating contracting firm in Washington, D.C. Mr. Addams handled development, engineering and research of the products for a group of cast-iron boiler manufacturers in Philadelphia in 1896. During that same year, he was a founder of The American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers. In 1903 he was employed by the Kewanee Boiler Company of Illinois. He went to Washington as a special representative to contact government agencies and to act as a consultant on various heating projects. He rejoined the Kewanee Boiler Company in 1911 to set up a New York branch and also to serve as sales manager of the operation. From 1911-1918, he spent time in Washington as a liaison representative between the company and the government on the design and development of boilers and hot water heaters. Foreseeing the extended growth of construction along the eastern seaboard and the prospect of sizeable business volumes, Mr. Addams joined with the Kewanee Boiler Company of Illinois in 1920 to form a subsidiary company known as the Kewanee Boiler Company of New York. His initial position with the new firm was Vice President, and in 1921 he became President. The same year he acquired the Fitzgibbons Boiler Company, of Oswego, New York, and also became its President. He resigned as President in 1947, and was succeeded by his son, Paul K. Addams. Concurrently, he became Chairman of the Board of the firm and pursued his responsibilities with the same fervor that marked his long and outstanding career. Dr. Addams’ career closely paralleled that of ASHVE, being identified with the advancement of engineering practice, research and development techniques in the field of heating and air conditioning. He received the F. Paul Anderson Medal in 1952 in recognition of his notable contributions to the advancement of the fields of boiler design and performance. In the 1951 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science from Albright College. Homer Addams served as ASHVE President in 1924. He also served as First Vice President, Treasurer and on the ASHVE Council. He was active in the founding of the Society’s Research Laboratory at the United States Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1919, and was a member of the first Guide Committee in 1922. He served ASHVE with many committee assignments He also held membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Uniform Boiler Low Society, the Steel Boiler Institute, Inc., the Engineers Club of New York, the Engineers Club of Philadelphia, and the Greenleaf Lodge, F. & A. M., Allentown, Pennsylvania. Sources: ASHRAE’s Website: Society Groups, Honors and Awards Committee
