SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP AN ENGINE FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

For 35 years, Ashoka has identified and supported nearly 3300 leading social entrepreneurs in 87 countries. These social entrepreneurs have implemented innovative practices to create positive change when faced with societal challenges. Their ideas are so powerful that 91% of them are replicated – meaning that their solutions are spreading, and more positive change is being generated. In this report, you will get to know 17 of these remarkable people.

When working with social entrepreneurs, you often won-der what it is that makes them able to see possibilities where others see problems. What is it that makes it possible for Marit Sanner to systemically change the child protection systems in Norway, and for Admir Lukacevic to successful-ly empower kids in the suburbs of Sweden? Working close-ly with social entrepreneurs since 1980, we see clear pat-terns in the skills that are central to changemaking. Empathy, creativity, leadership and the ability to work in teams are some that stand out. Working towards our vision of creating a world where everyone can be a changemaker, it became apparent to us that there is a need for fostering these skills more broadly. This is the idea behind Ashoka Changemaker Schools.

So far Ashoka has identified and linked 180 schools in 17 countries across four continents. In 2015, we chose the three first Scandinavian schools to join our global network: we welcome Röselidschools, Young Business Creatives (YBC) and Fryshuset to our global network. Every Changemaker School is selected because of their unique approach to fos-tering changemaker skills. In this report you will learn more about the network and why these particular schools were chosen to be part of it.

Beyond working with Scandinavia’s leading social entrepre-neurs and innovative schools, Ashoka Scandinavia contin-ues to focus on contributing to strengthen the field of so-cial entrepreneurship in our region. As the world’s oldest and largest organization for social entrepreneurship in the world, we are committed to sharing our global knowledge and experience.

Ashoka is the largest network of social entrepreneurs world-wide. Founded by Bill Drayton in 1980, Ashoka has provid-ed start-up financing, professional support services, and con-nections to a global network across the business and social sectors, and a platform for people dedicated to changing the world.

Ashoka launched the field of social entrepreneurship and has activated multi-sector partners across the world who in-creasingly look to entrepreneurial talent and new ideas to solve social problems.

Ashoka Fellows remain the core of our community, and their insights show us how the world is moving and what is needed next. Ashoka’s mission has evolved beyond cata-lyzing individual entrepreneurs to enabling an “everyone a changemaker” world. This means equipping more people –

including young people – with the skillset and a connection to purpose so that they can contribute ideas and effectively solve problems at whatever scale is needed in their family, community, city, workplace, field, industry, country.

The evolution of our mission comes from the urgent realiza-tion that the pace of change is accelerating in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. Our strategic initiatives focus on setting in motion the people, resources and ecosys-tems that will bring about a social revolution where every-one contributes to change for the good of all.

Working in partnership with private, philanthropic and cit-izen sector players we are achieving large-scale social inno-vation that is grounded in decades of entrepreneurial expe-rience.

Ashoka Scandinavia was established in 2011 in Stockholm, Sweden. In 2014 we opened our first office in Oslo, Norway. Ashoka in Scandinavia aims to support the leading social en-trepreneurs in the region, young entrepreneurs, as well as the most innovative schools. By spreading knowledge about the field of social entrepreneurship as Ashoka sees it after

35 years in the business, we seek to further the field of en-trepreneurship in Scandinavia. We do so by way of our pro-grams as well as sharing the knowledge and experience our organization has accumulated over the past 35 years.

THE SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR AND FINANCING

For Ashoka, the term “social entrepreneur” describes an individual who conceives of, and relentlessly pursues, a new idea designed to solve societal problems on a very wide scale by changing the systems that undergird the problems.

This definition includes two critical components:

• The entrepreneur must seek to create impact on a wide societal scale; he or she will not rest until the new idea has been broadly adopted at the national and even international level.

• The entrepreneur must seek systemic change, defined as the fundamental reform of existing societal systems and/or the creation of new ones.

WHAT IS A SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR?

In 1980 Ashoka launched the field of social entrepreneurship. Most of the social entrepreneurs elected into Ashoka’s fellowship pro-gram in the beginning were running non-profit organizations. As economies and markets change, so do the social entrepreneurs’ choice of business models and financial structures.

Social entrepreneurs have to nimbly navigate a multitude of sys-tems and legal structures around the world, as they work to ensure that they maximize their impact. Today we see that social entre-preneurs have several ways of organizing: non profit, for profit and hybrid forms. They may receive financial support through private donations, government support, grants and foundations, as well as selling products and services to the private and public market.

Out of the 3000+ social entrepreneurs in Ashoka’s fellowship pro-gram, less than 20% run pure for-profit business models. Within 5 years of election, about 50% of them diversify their income. This means that they operate in the space between pure charity and pure business, they are hybrid businesses.

While helping social entrepreneurs navigate the possible business models we know from around the world, Ashoka stays true to our goal of contributing to maximize every entrepreneurs’ positive social impact.

The social entrepreneur and his vision: Admir expe-rienced war during his childhood and many challeng-es as a person with international background growing up in a segregated area of Sweden. This inspired him to stay persistent and creative, which became his most valuable assets. With Idrott Utan Gränser – “Sports Without Borders” –, he is amplifying the voice of young people by changing the way society responds to social differences through new and positive role models, and changing the way young people from segregated areas view their opportunities, potentials and futures.

The idea: Recognizing the deeper struggles young peo-ple face as immigrants, Idrott Utan Gränser trains and prepares young people for a lifetime of self-respect and personal leadership. Overturning the structure of traditional support for immigrants in Scandinavia, IUG uses both common and rare sports, as well as hands-on role modeling as a means to inspire young people from diverse backgrounds to be guided by goals, discipline and the rewards of personal growth.

A person’s surroundings and relationships strongly influence behavior and mindset. IUG engages society as a whole to form meaningful interactions and role models for young people and help them see possibilities for their future as members of society.

The social entrepreneur and his vision: Growing up with a hard-of-hearing brother in Orebro, Sweden, a city with a large population of persons with hearing dis-abilities, Dennis has engaged with the deaf world from a young age, volunteering as an interpreter alongside running an advertising agency. Since 2005, Dennis has worked with sign language full-time. He is dedicated to building a future with more resources and better op-portunities for sign language users all around the world. Dennis is committed to increasing society’s literacy of sign languages around the world and elevate every human’s right to communicate.

The idea: The European Sign Language Center (ESLC) provides people with hearing disabilities creative and simple methods for the use and spread of sign language. It entails a free-of-charge global web and mobile platform of signs through spreadthesign.com, eLearning platforms, a text-to-sign tool that transforms comprehension for people with significant literacy problems as well as hearing difficulties, and a network of local partners that fosters the inclusion of these individuals in society as full economic citizens.

The social entrepreneur and his vision: Johan believes that math is an integral skill to building functional and active cit-izenship. He is helping young people experience math not only as a subject, but also as an essential part of daily life. He envisions a future where people will be equipped with math skills and better able to pursue careers where such skills are applicable and transferable. Johan is fostering the personal ambitions of tomorrow’s professionals.

The idea: Mattecentrum – “Center of Mathematics” – increa- ses mathematics skills among young people. Through after

school tutorials and the online tool matteboken.se, thou-sands of young people and recurring participants are being trained in mathematics. The free of charge programs are both community-based and web-based, building a web of expert volunteers to create a culture where math is vibrant, exciting and regarded as a valued skill for the future of young people. Johan Wendt has also broadened the scope of its work by launching Kodcentrum – “Center of Coding” – to introduceto introduce children and young people to pro-gramming languages and cultivate tomorrow’s developers.

The social entrepreneur and her vision: Sofia’s vision is to seize the strengths, motivations and experiences that people bring to Sweden from other countries and cultures, and at the same time, create hope for their futures. Moreover she seeks to enable them to be heard, be proud of their assets, and to be absorbed by the labor market. In addition, Sofia aims to engage more companies in a commitment to increase diversity and inclusion not only within their corporate cultures and HR practices, but also externally across Swedish business communities.

The idea: Mitt Liv – “My Life” – a social enterprise, was founded on the belief of the equal value of all people and their inner power to grow and develop. The objective

is to increase diversity and inclusion in the labor market in Sweden. Via mentoring and training programs, Mitt Liv provides opportunities for skilled individuals with an international background who wish to enter the labor market, and organizations and companies seeking diverse skills, to meet and engage. Companies committed to a future of greater diversity participate in the mentoring program, group discussions, guest lectures as well as initiatives that raise awareness on diversity and inclusion. Mitt Liv enables employers to see the value and benefit of employing skilled individuals with an international background, which in turn enables this population of job seekers to find employment relevant to their educational backgrounds and skills.

The social entrepreneur and his vision: Karl-Henrik’s vision was to engage scientists and leaders in business and munici-palities to co-create a unifying framework for social and eco-logical sustainability, and build a global institutional platform that brings together disparate strands of environmentalism to assist institutions, from companies to governments, to create and implement concrete sustainability strategies. This vision has come true. With The Natural Step and its large network of scientists, universities, business corporations and municipalities, he is nurturing global environmental progress and envisions a world in which human society thrives within nature’s limits.

The idea: The Natural Step is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to inspire scientific research and consensus, edu-cation, advisory work, system change initiatives, innovation and research in sustainable development. The organization advises and teaches public and private organizations how to put the organizations in the context of a robust univer-sal definition of sustainability, and let this strategically guide how to transform into full sustainability. The Natural Step has established collaborative processes, a methodology, and a growing toolkit and guidelines for analysis, indication and monitoring of transitions, decision support, management, in-creased opportunities and reduced financial risks, communi-cation and a certification process – all cohesively aligned with one and the same framework.

The social entrepreneur and his vision: Anders has always been fascinated by the uses of space, the rights that revolve around it, and how societies address the challenges of ‘con-tested spaces’ such as in slums. With Peepoople he is chang-ing the way we think about sanitation, moving from a notion of waste, to a notion where waste is a closed loop solution that improves ecosystems and enables people to live digni-fied and healthier lives.

The idea: Peepoople has developed an innovative solution for the lack of sanitation. In order to accelerate access to sanitation, Peepoople produced a personal, single-use, self-sanitising, fully biodegradable “Peepoo” toilet that prevents feces from contaminating immediate areas and a surrounding ecosystems. Once used, peepoos turn into fertilizers. This improves livelihoods, increases food security and prevents the transmission of diseases and the contamination of water. Due to Peepoo products’ mobility, the most hard to reach areas have been provided mass relief from the lack of sanitation - from urban slums and refugee camps, to poverty stricken schools and cities struck by natural disasters.

friendly and respectful students. We believe that the various activities, both physical and others, promote friendship, prevent conflicts and create engagement.

The social entrepreneur and his vision: Kjartan was bullied in school as a child. As a young adult, he worked as an athletics instructor and carried with him a passion for physical activity, fitness and human interaction, particularly in relation to bullying. He has imbued imbued Trivselsprogrammet (TL) – “Wellbeing Program” – with his experiences and passions, bringing about profound changes in people. Kjartan aims to change the face of communication and inter-action among young people by using activity to reduce bully- ing, and promote healthy lifestyles and social interactions among young people.

The idea: Trivselsprogrammet creates a system for active play in primary and secondaryschools, enabling children to create school environments that are enriched with per-sonal leadership, active play, and teamwork. The pro-gram’s core principle is the student election of Activity Leaders – young people who exhibit values such as kindness, empathy and respect towards others at the schools. Activity Leaders, once trained, facilitate inclusive activities in schoolyards by initiating, leading and partici-pat-ing in the activities with classmates. TL is enabling young people to take on empathetic leadership and help create school environments free of bullying, and building a future where youths consider it “cool to be nice.”

The social entrepreneur and his vision: Eddi was taught the importance of dreaming since childhood and his entrepre-neurial life began in adolescence where he developed nu-merous solutions for his peers. It is fundamental for Eddi that everyone has the right to work, contribute and be taken se-riously regardless of their educational and employment track records. Eddi’s mission is to unleash Pøbels’ skills and poten-tials in contributing to the job market and in shaping society beyond Norway.

The idea: Pøbelprosjektet – “The Pueblo Project” – is a training- program for young people that have fallen out of society in Norway. By building their confidence and self-worth, they are empowered to make their way back into education or employment, utilizing their existing resources to contribute to society. Pøbelprosjektet has formed a network of 7,600 businesses that take on Pøbel graduates, and Pøbelprosjektet follows up with them for up to 7 years to ensure their progress after completion of the training program. Over 90% of Pøbel graduates are employed, go back to school, or seek additional training - making it one of the most successful programs in Norway for the reintegration of young people in the labor market and education.

The social entrepreneur and her vision: Lone believes in the power of activity as a key indicator of well-being and has proved that it has an effective tool for empowerment through her work. Lone envisions a society where activity is the central “dosett” of care, social interaction and elder-ly empowerment. Her long term aims are to improve lives in additional contexts beyond nursing homes, e.g. mental health care hospitals and homes for the disabled, abused, or newly retired.

The idea: Aktivetetdosetten is inspired by the concept of a “dosett”, a container used to facilitate the dosage of medica-tion. Aktivitetdosetten repositions the individual as the focal point of care in eldercare institutions and offers opportu-nities for active participation by family members, volunteer networks, and schools. Key nursing staff are trained as “activ-ity doctors”, individual activity plans are created for patients, and an activity book for nursing staff, volunteers and family members are central in enabling all those involved in care to have agency and compassion for the needs of patients, as well as knowledge on how to implement activity dosetts based on the patients’ interests.

The social entrepreneur and her vision: Heidi Wang is shift-ing social responses to dementia. After learning firsthand the limitations of the Norwegian support system for dementia when her father was diagnosed, she designed her own sys-tems of support for other families and people diagnosed with dementia. Her system fills in the gaps in the health care sys-tem, and reframes diagnosis as an opportunity rather than an ending. It allows participants to extend their time living at home for more than two years, improving quality of life and saving the health system millions. For example, in a town of 20,000 people, this type of service means an approximately $21 million saved.

The idea: Heidi Wang is shifting social responses to dementia by building new resources in society for people with dementia that combines an emphasis on early diagnosis and prevention, focusing on what remains rather than what they have lost. NOEN – “Someone” – has created a caregiving population equipped with skills to increase the quality of life. Through a hand-tailored treatment program that draws on a person’s life-long qualities, those with dementia are placed at the center of care. To contribute to better lives for those with dementia and their caregivers NOEN’s mission is to change law in Norway for the individual’s right to care when diagnosed.

The social entrepreneur and her vision: Trained as an an-thropologist, Marit is passionate about “letting others de-scribe their own reality”. Inspired by Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, she works with young people to enable them to have a voice as well as have their voices heard and taken into account. Marit believes that life is too short not to work hard for change, and with Forandringsfabrikken –“Change Factory”– aims to change child welfare, protec-tion, health, human rights and education.

The idea: Forandringsfabrikken increases equality for young people. Through a participatory methodology and collabo- rations with organizations, communities, institutions and businesses, young people are evermore influencing the care, education, protection and services they receive. Forandringsfabrikken enables the young people to voice

their experiences and opinions and reach policy makers and decision makers in Norway. In this way, they are advisors to the system, and they call themselves “Pro’s” – because they are professionals of the system and must be heard in decision-making processes that concern them. By changing schools, child welfare, mental health and correctional servic-es based on young people’s responses, Forandringsfabrikken ensures that the benefits young people receive actually ad-dress their needs. In pursuit of greater dignity and equality for more, Marit has developed a way to ensure that peo-ple can share their realities, give advice in decision-mak-ing processes and contribute to improve the welfare sys-tem and increase participation of young people. In this way, Forandringsfabrikken helps more people experience the joy and strength in treating others equally and being treated equally.

The social entrepreneur and her vision: Hanne’s interest in the sciences began from her childhood and developed further after her PhD where she observed the question: “Why doesn’t everyone love science as much as I do?” Hanne realized that many of her scientific colleagues point-ed to a time in their youth when their interest in science was sparked. With Forskerfabrikken, she seeks to repli-cate those experiences to “open up minds to this exciting world”.

The idea: Forskerfabrikken – “Scientist Factory” – gives children the opportunity to engage in Science, and most recently Math, beyond the school hours. Methods of teaching are aligned with the school curriculum, yet distinct from conventional teaching to provide young learners an opportunity to practice the subject areas hands-on. Courses are designed to spark children s passion for the subject areas and enrich and speed learning by positioning the subjects as something fun and interesting.

Autism is a life-long disability, which affects one out of 68 children in the U.S. Despite the fact that most adults with autism are willing and able to work, only 10 - 20% achieve fulfilling employment. Specialisterne is harnessing the special characteristics and talents of people with autism as a competitive advantage and a means to help them secure meaningful employment. The social entrepreneur and his vision: Johann is a lifelong athlete, ambassador of sport and dedicated advocate for play as a pow-erful tool for change. Through his work with Right To Play, he has helped millions of children and youth around the world reap the benefits of play: learning, laughter, confidence, resilience and hope for the future. The success of Right To Play programs have also served to help put Sport for Development and Peace firmly on the global development agenda.

The idea: Founded by Koss in 2000, Right To Play is a global or-ganization that uses the transformative power of play to educate and empower children facing adversity. Working in more than 20 countries around the world, Right To Play programs engage chil-dren in learning by using specially-designed play activities to deliv-er lessons that benefit their health, promote peace, foster critical life skills, and enhance the overall quality of education. Facilitated twice weekly by trained, local volunteer Coaches, Right To Play programs help children turn the lessons they learn during play into new habits and positive behaviors that impact sustainable change—both within themselves and the community.

In Uganda, as an example, 93% of children in Right To Play pro-grams report high levels of communication skills, respect, self-es-teem, peer support and positive leadership skills; 92% of children in programs there also know ways of preventing HIV from sexual transmission. In Liberia, 84% of children participating in play ac-tivities say that they know how to solve conflicts with their peers peacefully, and; 89% of Coaches in Benin report Right To Play pro-grams are contributing to their community development.

The social entrepreneur and his vision: For the past 15 years, Orri has orchestrated an international effort to conserve and restore the wild Atlantic salmon. He is an environmental leader who utiliz-es his business and negotiating skills to effectively protect salmon populations and prevent their decimation.

The idea: The North Atlantic Salmon Fund campaigns and lobbies for the preservation of wild North Atlantic salmon populations. It works with governments, private organizations, netsmen and the salmon fishing industry to restore salmon stocks to historic abun-dance, arrange alternative sustainable fishing for the netsmen, stop destructive commercial salmon fishing, and help salmon return back to their native habitats.

A main priority of the NASF is to end all interceptory mixed stock fisheries. It pays netsmen to not fish for salmon and helps arrange alternative fishing for them. It also works with netsmen to make the North Atlantic environment an example of bio-diversity and sustainable development. Another priority is to influence govern-ments and organizations to adopt more sustainable business mod-els. The NASF is currently lobbying the Norwegian Government to abandon the destructive form of commercial salmon fishing. It has also gained the support of fishermen from the Faroe Islands in condemning the Scottish and Norwegian governments for encour-aging the commercial exploitation of scarce wild salmon stocks.

The social entrepreneur and his vision: Jesper Juul is a family therapist with extensive experience in working with children and young people with behavior difficulties, pedagogical development in schools and kindergartens and also with groups of single moth-ers and parent groups. With Family Lab international, he is ena-bling people to create more profound relationships with children and youth in their care. He is transforming the dynamics within family relationships, enabling the resonance of empathy, leadership respect and competence among human beings. His work is inspir-ing many to adopt his concepts and approach to creating healthy relationships and human beings. He publishes articles, short films, DVDs and books, which are shifting the thinking of broader so-ciety and those working with young people across diverse popu-lations. Jesper is devoted to the continued growth of Family-Lab International and aspires to make his work “transcultural” for true global impact.

The idea: Family Lab works with families to facilitate meaningful conversations between parents and children, and helps parents navigate new, non-hierarchical structures. It also works with a broad range of authorities that work with young people such as teachers, employers, and professionals to engage entire systems

that relate to child development. A network of Family-Lab branches offer seminars, workshops, symposiums, and active training techniques to allow families and other actors to redesign their internal dynamics to create healthy relationships, placing the child as an equal contributor within the family as a basis for redistribution of power.

A working group - “The Quality of Child-Adult Relationships in Families and Schools” - has now been established by the EU. Beyond the EU, Family-Lab has spread to South America. It is also being increasingly applied in refugee camps and among immigrant and indigenous populations. Family-Lab has become a broad popular movement for equal dignity and power-balanced relationships between people and whole systems surrounding human beings.

Ashoka aims to foster a world where every young person is empowered to bring about lasting positive change in their communities, organizations, lives, society and wherever they are most needed as adults.

After 35 years of experience working with social entrepre-neurs and changemakers globally, Ashoka sees that these people share common skills, such as empathy, creativity, leadership, and teamwork. We seek to enable more young people to become changemakers, ready and able to address social challenges, drive change and thrive in a rapidly chang-ing world now and in the future. To reach this goal we col-laborate with schools who focus on fostering these change-maker skills.

Ashoka changemaker schools is a global network launched to identify, connect, and support innovative schools around the world. The schools, each with their own methods, em-power young people, by equipping them with these change-maker skills.

Once selected, the Ashoka Changemaker Schools are con-nected with each other and with the Ashoka Community of social entrepreneurs, and supporters from several sectors. Together we work to support a strategic effort to spread the schools ideas and practices, and ultimately lead a trans-formation in education, such that Changemaker Skills be-come essential to teaching and learning.

RÖSELIDSSKOLAN

Röselidsskolan is a public Swedish primary school that is successfully working to bring entrepreneurship and real-life problem solving into the school curriculum. They are simultaneously changing Gråbo as a mu-nicipality, and the perception of education as a whole. The school is a thought leader for innovative learn-ing in the region. 3 REASONS: WHY RÖSELIDSSKOLAN IS A CHANGEMAKER SCHOOL:

1. The school is a thought leader in making a conceptual shift from the perception that school should be a place of duty and obedience and instead be a place of engagement and inner drive. This thinking is per-vasive in the school and a commitment of the leadership team, and the school is also physically designed to use and represent this shift.

2. The school actively builds empathy. For instance, every school day starts with a calm process time - teachers and students sit in a ring on the floor discussing the day ahead, learnings from the day before, and anything that the students wish to discuss before starting the day. The purpose of this is building re-lationships and empathy in the group. Ashoka Fellow Kjartan Eide’s empathy Program Trivselslederne is also active in school – a project engaging students in playful activities during recess to prevent bullying.

3. Röselidskolan is viewed as a leading example for innovative education in Sweden. Last year, the school was visited by so many educators that they decided to organize a conference to share innovative learning techniques, which was attended by almost 400 educators.

YBC – YOUNG BUSINESS CREATIVES

YBC – Young Business Creatives is a Swedish public highschool with changemaking at its core. They work with entrepreneurship, creativity and real life cases in their everyday education. The students are highly involved in both the school leadership, creating their own curriculum and taking part in shaping their lo-cal community via both influencers, local business and leaders in the municipality. YBC is a school seen as a frontrunner in modern education in Sweden.

3 REASONS WHY YBC IS A CHANGEMAKER SCHOOL:

1. YBC’s vision is “our students will change the world” and aims to be a creative meeting place for a life-long learning in an ever-changing world. The students, called “young business creatives”, are provided with the skills they need to solve problems. The education is arranged around 7 skills; creativity, thinking, self-confidence, communication, responsibility, digital ability and business thinking – they are evident in the education as a whole.

2. YBC practices entrepreneurial learning. The aim is for the students to lead their own education and steer it towards what they are interested in.

3. Teamwork is a core value at YBC. They work with seminary pedagogy – were students are briefed in larger groups and then work closely in smaller teams to solve tasks. The aim is to train the student’s crit-ical thinking, independence and feeling of responsibility. Almost all schoolwork revolves around students forming and working in teams.

Ashoka aims to strengthen the field of social entrepreneur- ship, and to support the worlds leading social entrepreneurs by building a network of strategic partners around them. Perspectives and knowledge from accomplished leaders from various fields adds concrete value to the work of social entrepreneurs.

Ashoka Support Network (ASN) is a global community of successful, innovative leaders from a variety of fields who see entrepreneurship as the primary engine for econom-ic and social development. The individuals in the Ashoka Support Network support Ashoka financially as well as stra-tegically, offering their time, networks and expertise, to ac-celerate positive social change.

In Scandinavia, The Ashoka Network collaborate with Ashoka in several ways, such as:

• Provide strategic support to Ashoka Fellows, Ashoka Changemaker Schools and Ashoka• Serve on boards and contribute in project initiatives of social entrepreneurs• Facilitate network building across sectors to further the field of social entrepreneurship• Participate in the development of new initiatives• Attend local and global gatherings and workshops in the Ashoka Network
