The civil aviation sector is hugely susceptible to oil price volatility, economic cycles, natural disasters, epidemics and political upheavals. According to the report, the Indian civil aviation industry has exhibited tremendous resilience to the global economic slowdown and ranks ninth in the global civil aviation market. This is attributed largely to the growing economy, increased competition among airlines, especially among low cost carriers, modern airports, greater use of technology, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and increased emphasis on regional connectivity.

The report highlights that the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP 2016) is likely to provide a significant fillip to the industry. The various fiscal and monetary incentives, liberal policies focused on ‘ease of doing business’ and enhanced push for regional and global connectivity are extremely positive.

Steps taken to revive and operationalise around 160 airports in India, if chosen carefully, will improve air connectivity to regional and remote areas. Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in the sector will get substantial support from the state in terms of financing, concessional land allotment, tax holidays and other incentives.

According to Mr Harshavardhan Neotia, President, FICCI, “Enormous growth in domestic passenger traffic, substantial strengthening

through Government initiatives, decrease in global crude oil prices and airlines showing profits indicates a significantly positive transformation for the Indian civil aviation market. The close partnership between the government and the industry in ongoing and future projects will further improve regional connectivity. I am certain that the sector will take complete advantage of the positive momentum and help sustain the growth”

Mr. Amber Dubey, Partner and India Head of Aerospace and Defence, KPMG said, “The positive impact of NCAP 2016, rise in disposable incomes and the fall in ATF prices are likely to help India leapfrog into the top three of the world. One hopes that the government can match domestic ATF prices with global levels for a three year experimental period. MRO is likely to see a huge revival if the service tax is zero-rated. Growth of aviation and tourism can create a huge multiplier in terms of GDP growth and jobs.”

The report sheds light on the astounding growth of 17.1% in the total passenger throughput for FY 2015-16 till January 2016 standing at 184 million. Passenger throughput is expected to reach around 370 million by 2020, with domestic traffic constituting around 80% of the total throughput (figure 1)

According to International Air Transport Association (IATA), passenger traffic on

international routes showed an increase of 6.5% in 2015 compared to 2014. In comparison, during Apr-Dec 2015, international passenger throughput at Indian airports grew at 7.7%. Middle East continues to lead in the growth of revenue passenger kilometre (RPKM) followed by Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Europe. North America and Africa showed sluggish growth. By 2034, it is expected that Asia-Pacific will be the biggest market for global aviation.

The report strongly suggests that in order to ensure high-geared growth, it is imperative to broaden the base of domestic flyers through greater air connectivity in Tier 2/3 cities. Many Indian states have taken positive initiatives, largely in the field of development of airports, reduction in sales tax rates on ATF and direct subsidy to airlines for improvement of connectivity.

The government and industry are engaged closely in addressing the various opportunities and challenges in the aviation sector; and that’s a welcome sign. The collaboration needs to be strengthened and institutionalised. With positive macro-economic factors, low ATF prices and industry-friendly government policies, India is well placed to achieve its vision of becoming the third largest aviation market by 2020 and the largest by 2030.

Another session on Manufacturing & MRO—Potential in India was chaired and moderated by Mr. Anil Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt of India.

Mr Rick D Clace, Associate Dean - School of Aviation, Confederation College, Canada. The session focussed on developing robust training and skill building ecosystem to support the projected growth in air traffic.

The focal objectives of the conference were to develop India as a hub for aerospace manufacturing and MRO services by nurturing next generation of aerospace workers and undertake regulatory policies and measures for creating a win-win situation for stakeholders. Also, the highlighting of major technologies for promoting indigenisation of aerospace manufacturing, and encouraging new forms of public-private partnership tailored to air connectivity needs were among other objectives.

The conference was aimed at creating opportunities for growth, analyse trends, potential areas of growth and investment in aerospace manufacturing and MRO. It also provided an excellent opportunity to learn the best global practices and latest partnership strategies described by the brightest minds in aerospace for exploiting the opportunities in aviation sector,

India an engine of growth for Pratt & WhitneyPratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Corp. company, is at the

forefront of developing game-changing technologies for the future, such as the PurePower PW1000G engine, with patented Geared

Turbofan engine technology. The company’s worldwide large commercial engine maintenance, repair and overhaul network provides innovative services that add value for customers around the globe.

Pratt & Whitney’s large commercial engines power more than 25 percent of the world’s mainline passenger fleet. The company continues to develop new engines and work with its partners to meet airline customers’ future needs. The company has also further hallmarked its presence in the Indian market.

“7,000 PurePower engines have been ordered worldwide. Yesterday was a big day for us. IndiGo brought their A320neo aircraft and the airline is the first Asian carrier to be powered by PurePower engines. Approximately 600 PurePower engines are on order from India,” said Paul Burke, Sr. Marketing Manager, Commercial Engines, Pratt & Whitney, while speaking to Show Daily at India Aviation.

Among its customers in India are IndiGo, Air Costa and GoAir and there are 800 or more Pratt & Whitney engines flying in India today among 350 aircraft (civil and military).

IndiGo’s first A320neo had made an appearance on the opening day of the India Aviation show. IndiGo finalised the purchase of 250 A320neo aircraft in August, Airbus’ largest-ever order by number of planes.

“The Indian market is growing aggressively and IndiGo and its huge order book is a case in point to show the industry’s anticipation that the Indian population will increasingly be able to take advantage of the convenience of air travel,” Burke said.

The PurePower engine family has completed more than 50,000 cycles and 32,000 hours of testing.

“We’re very pleased to say that from day one this engine has been meeting its performance specifications. However, we’re not going to stop improving it and are advancing the technology and in 2021 we’ll be releasing our advantage package new engine which will have a 2% more fuel advantage. The engines that are out there today will be able to be retro-fitted,” said Burke.

In the PurePower PW1000G engine family in particular, a state of the art gear system separates the engine fan from the low pressure compressor and turbine, allowing each of the modules to operate at their optimum speeds. This enables the fan to rotate slower and while the low pressure compressor and turbine operate at a high speed, increasing engine efficiency and delivering significantly lower fuel consumption, emissions and noise. This increased efficiency also translates to fewer engine stages and parts for lower weight and reduced maintenance costs.

The PurePower PW1000G engine’s fan-drive gear system is just one component of this next-generation engine. The PurePower PW1000G engine also incorporates advances in aerodynamics, lightweight materials and other major technology improvements in the high-pressure spool, low-pressure

turbine, combustor, controls, engine health monitoring and more.Pratt & Whitney has also shown its involvement in India by launching a

customer training centre in Hyderabad in September last year. The training centre will be housed at United Technologies Corporation India Pvt ltd (“UTC India”). Aircraft engineers and technicians will be trained on current and new engine models at this facility.

The Customer Training Center will provide key training for GTF engine and V2500 engine customers, beginning with a capacity of training the equivalent of 2,000 students attending a one-week class per year, with growth capability of up to 4,000 students per year. Building on Pratt & Whitney’s East Hartford and Beijing training facilities, this third facility in Hyderabad will satisfy training demand in a fast emerging market like India.

In an effort to promote further aviation education and training, Pratt & Whitney has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Asia to expand undergraduate and graduate aviation and engineering degree opportunities for those in India. This agreement will assist in developing aviation education and training, corporate scholarships and research opportunities between the two institutions, which will benefit the aviation workforce of India and other Asian countries.

World’s fastest emerging economy requires over 1600 new aircraftIndia on way to becoming aviation market giant by 2034: Airbus

India’s preference for Airbus aircraft was further consolidated in 2015 with 250 new firm orders, lifting market share of orders

and the in-service fleet to over 70 per cent. Today some 56 per cent of India’s in-service fleet are Airbus aircraft operated by most leading Indian carriers. This includes India’s first A320neo, the first to be delivered in the Asia region.

According to Airbus’ latest Global Market Forecast in the 20 years from 2015 to 2034 shared at India Aviation on Day Two, India will require over 1,600 new passenger and freighter aircraft to help meet growth in demand. Valued at US$224 billion, these will include 1,230 new single aisle aircraft and 380 wide-body passenger and freighter aircraft. By 2035, the number of Indian cities with over one million monthly air passengers will more than triple.

As a result, traffic serving the Indian market is set to grow at 8.4 per cent per year over the next 20 years, well above the world average 4.6 per cent. Domestic Indian traffic will grow more quickly at 9.3 percent – making India the world’s leading emerging aviation market.

“We have seen launch of new carriers in India and we see a role for A321neo, which is the largest single aisle aircraft with lowest cost per seat. The number of wide body planes in India will grow seven fold. We expect Indian carriers to grow international air traffic and in order to do so the airlines will need wide body planes. Indian carriers carry over 30% of India’s international traffic and there is room to grow it to 50%,” said Joost Van der Heijden, Airbus’ Head of Marketing in Asia.

The complete Airbus product line comprises the best-selling A320 Family in the single aisle market, the popular A330 and all-new A350 XWB in the mid-size widebody category and the flagship A380 in the very large aircraft segment. In the freight market Airbus currently offers the new-build A330-200F and the A330 Passenger-to-Freighter (A330P2F) programme.

Air traffic growth is driven by such factors

as urbanisation, the growth in wealth, as seen by the growing middle classes, tourism and trade. India’s population is set to surpass China’s by 2025, and according to Oxford Economics, the number of Indian middle classes will top 600 million people, more than double that of the USA. By 2034, Indian passengers on average will each make four times as many flights as they do today.

“We are confident about the India forecast because of economic growth, middle class growth and airlines are doing well. There is a relatively low number of aircraft compared to other emerging markets,” Joost Van Der Heijden said.

He also clarified that 70% of the market share of Airbus is excluding Kingfisher Airlines’ orders.

On the subject of the outlook for the A380

for India, Joost Van Der Heijden said that with airports becoming increasingly congested and with infrastructure developing, the prospects for the plane were good.

Speaking about Airbus’ involvement in Indian industry, Srinivasan Dwarakanath, President, Airbus Division in India, said that the company employs some 400 skilled engineers and supports 6,000 Indian jobs.

“Every Airbus aircraft from our assembly line is partly ‘Made in India’. Just to give you an example, the evacuation slides of all the A380s, that’s eight on each side, are done in Bengaluru by UTAS and they also do them for the 330 programme. This shows we are working across the supply chain whether it is a Tier 2 or a Tier 1 supplier,” he said.

“We grow them to Tier 1 and if they become Tier 1 we increase the complexity of what we do with them. That’s one strategy-but we also work with global companies who have their outfit in India to really make in India as well,” Dwarakanath said.

According to him, in the last ten years Airbus’ sourcing has grown tremendously to 16 times and last year itself reached about $ 500 million in terms of activities which it got from India. “When Prime Minister Modi visited the aerospace facilities last year, the commitment by our CEO over the next five years in cumulative sourcing volume was slated to be over $2 billion. I’m quite confident that we will be exceeding that volume-that’s a commitment we make for Make in India with the Indian suppliers,” said Dwarakanath.

Hyderabad Airport maintains its Top 3 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) ranking

GMR’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad, has featured among the world’s Top 3 Airports for 7th year in a row in ACI ASQ ranking. In its announcement of winners for Airport

Service Quality (ASQ) Award, 2015, Airports Council International (ACI), declared Hyderabad Airport - operated and managed by GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL) - as 3rd Best Airport in the world, in 5-15 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) Category. ACI ASQ is the world’s most renowned and premier passenger service benchmarking programme for airports globally.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. SGK Kishore, CEO, GHIAL, said, “We are absolutely delighted that Hyderabad Airport has again featured among the World’s Top 3 Airports in ACI ASQ ranking in the category of 5-15 Million Passengers Per Annum. It is a moment of great pride for us since we have had the rare honour of being ranked among the Global Top 3 airports from the very first year of operations and this year’s award marks the 7th year in a row that we have won this recognition.”

Being an internationally acclaimed recognition awarded on a global forum, Kishore said the ACI ASQ award also enhances the visibility of the city of Hyderabad, furthering the ‘Brand Hyderabad’ initiative of Government of Telangana. This will also boost Hyderabad’s standing as a leading global destination for travel, tourism and investment.

“ACI’s ASQ recognition is a major achievement for an airport and its community, and the entire credit for this feat goes to our stakeholders, partners, concessionaires and employees who have consistently delivered a memorable and delightful experience to our passengers. This is also a testimony to our unique approach of bringing in all stakeholders together under the umbrella of our ‘One family – One mission’ initiative to work for the common objective of excellence in passenger service,” he added.

The ACI Airport Service Quality (ASQ) programme is unique as the airport industry’s only global benchmarking programme measuring passenger satisfaction in real time while passengers are at the airport. ACI which carries out surveys at 300 airports around the world ranks the airports on the basis of airport service quality surveys which represent passenger feedback on 34 key service indicators. RGIA is known globally for its excellent passenger facilities and customer experience. The airport has well established systems and processes integrated with all stakeholders and this has enabled RGIA to achieve the common goal of ‘passenger delight’. Despite competition

from much newer airports in the region, the airport continues to maintain its reputation for setting global benchmarks in airport service quality.

“Airports’ increasing concentration on ensuring a stellar passenger experience is part of a larger trend. Airports have evolved into complex, customer focused businesses in their own right that in many cases are in competition with each other for passenger traffic. From duty free and restaurants to ambience, cleanliness, courtesy of staff, amenities, efficiency and more, air travelers are expecting big things from the airports through which they travel. More than anything, ASQ is a way for participants to measure the extent to which they deliver on these expectations,” said Ms. Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World.

Hyderabad Airport is set to receive the award at the ASQ Awards Ceremony which is scheduled to take place during April 2016 as a part of the 2016 ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly in Gold Coast, Australia, in the presence of leaders from the global airports fraternity.

Singapore moves to enhance aircraft trackingAircraft tracking to be implemented to meet ICAO requirements

In its ongoing efforts to bolster aviation safety, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has published new rules to improve the tracking of Singapore-registered aircraft. The new rules will apply to all Singapore air operators operating

passenger aircraft of more than 27,000 kg and carrying more than 19 passengers, as well as cargo aircraft of more than 45,500 kg. These aircraft will be required to establish tracking capabilities that would enable the airlines to know the location of their aircraft at least every 15 minutes, throughout the entire duration of the flight.

CAAS will work closely with Singapore air operators to manage the transition to these new rules. From 1 July 2016 onwards, airlines will be required to track their aircraft either manually or automatically. From 8 November 2018 onwards, only automatic tracking will be permitted.

This move is consistent with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) plans to require a 15-minute standard for normal flight tracking1 by November 2018. Also, we will impose this requirement on our airlines flying over any area, which is more comprehensive than the ICAO requirement which is only for aircraft flying over oceanic areas.

Director-General of CAAS, Mr Kevin Shum, said, “The safety of the travelling public is always our priority. CAAS has worked closely with the industry to advance the implementation of the latest rules on enhanced aircraft tracking. When fully implemented, our airlines will have added assurance of the whereabouts and safety of their aircraft operations throughout their network.”

Local airlines have expressed their support for the move. Singapore Airlines Acting Senior Vice President Flight Operations, Captain C.E. Quay, said, “We are supportive of the efforts to improve flight tracking capabilities. Singapore Airlines is already in compliance with CAAS’ new rules, as we have enhanced flight tracking capabilities that give us detailed oversight of our global flight operations.”

Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of Tigerair Singapore, Mr Ho Yuen Sang, added, “We have been working closely with CAAS in order to achieve the highest level of surveillance and tracking for our aircraft. We are confident that these industry-leading regulations represent a significant step forward in aviation safety which is our top priority.”

“Everything is pointing in the right direction in India”

The Indian carriers have been enjoying a bluemoon period thanks to the low fuel prices

since October 2013. However, Dr. Dinesh Keskar, Senior Vice President of Sales Asia-Pacific and India, at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, states that this isn’t the only reason for the same. It’s

is a combination of reduction in fuel prices, low operating cost, increased passenger traffic and fare discipline that are driving the 20% profitability growth of the current Indian commercial aviation market. And if that isn’t anything to go by, then the numbers are also pointing in the same direction with

the country’s capacity discipline strengthening with the domestic load factor increased from 76.4% to 82.5%. In 2015 alone over 80 million passengers flew in the Indian domestic market registering an increase of 21% from the previous year.

However, the biggest concerning factor for the airlines remains the fluctuating nature of the Indian rupee which has been steadily declining since 2014. The reason for this concern is the operating income currency of the Indian carriers continues to be in rupees whereas their operating cost largely remains in dollars, making them loose more money at the bottom line due to the fluctuations. Despite these challenges, the domestic market in India has returned to profitability in 2015 from an average of negative $4 per seat in December 2014 to an average of positive $10 per seat by December 2015. “Everything is pointing in the right direction in India,”

This recovery is largely due

to the increased number of flights that are being added by airlines across domestic routes rather than an increase in the seating capacity. The Indian capacity metrics indicate nearly double the growth as compared to the global numbers across seats, flights and ASKs over a period of one year (January 2015 to January 2016). The numbers reveal a 12.6% growth in seats as compared to the global growth of 6.6% and a 12.9% growth in the number of flights as compared to the 5.1% growth globally. Followed by a 9.3% increase in ASK (Aviation Seat Kilometres) as compared to the global average of 7.1%.

Although the fuel prices have decreased 53% since mid 2013, Indian carriers continue to pay over 50% more for fuel than the US carriers. And the reduction in the fuel cost also drives an impact on the landing and navigational fees on direct operating cost. Infact the operating fuel cost has reduced from 49% in January 2013 to 23% in January 2016 with the landing and navigational fees contributing a growing proportion to the operating cost.

With a requirement of approximately 1,740 aircraft in the next 20 years valuing close to $240 billion, and single-aisle aircraft scheduled to dominate close to 80% of that demand, Keskar believes there won’t be a single Indian customer that will order an Airbus A380 for the next 20 years. And that Boeing is well placed to capitalise on this demand with their 737 Max. Currently, Jet Airways and Spicejet have placed orders for the 737 Max which will start delivering in late 2018.

However, with Go Air already placing orders for the A320neos alongwith the last year’s order placed by Indigo for the 250 A320neos, first of which was delivered recently to the airline, the race is surely heating up.

GUJSAIL - Propelling Aviation in Gujarat

Gujarat is pulling out all stops to make its aviation sector the last stop for investments. In the recently concluded

assembly session, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of Gujarat has proposed to establish a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Ankleshwar. This facility will be developed with a budgetary allocation of 20 Crores. Ankleshwar, a prominent industrial area, has been selected for its proximity to Mumbai which provides landing ease to aircrafts coming from the metro. The Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company (GUJSAIL), the nodal agency for developing aviation infrastructure in the state will be responsible for setting up of the MRO at Ankleshwar.

“While an MRO which already exists at Ahmedabad is equipped to conduct ‘tip to toe ‘maintenance of Legacy Aircrafts and is an authorised servicing facility of Embraer and Bombardier aircrafts. The proposed MRO at Ankleshwar will be able to accommodate two large aircrafts and three small aircrafts. The Ankleshwar MRO will be a Greenfield Airport Project dedicated to MRO and Cargo,” said Captain Ajay Chauhan, director, GUJSAIL and Civil Aviation Department Gujarat.

GUJSAILwhich operates under the autonomous regulatory body of the State Government, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is coinciding the setting up of MRO at Ankleshwar with that of an airstrip development at the location. Apart from Ankleshwar, GUJSAIL is also setting up airstrips at Palitana, Morbi, Dahej, Rajkot, Dholavira, Ambaji and Dwarka. Keeping the religious tourism in mind, the Government aims to prioritise the airstrip development at Ambaji, Palitana and Dwarka- well known places of religious importance.

In a first of its kind, GUJSAIL will also establish an Airborne Law Enforcement (ALE) division for policing activities in the State. The ALE will comprise of a fleet of helicopters equipped with Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR)

cameras and night vision goggles making them capable of conducting effective day or night surveillance.

On the anvil is also a Centre of Excellence (CoE) to provide for the human resources need of the aviation sector in the State. Siemens has been roped in to supply the hardware and software needs of the CoE. The CoE will be providing courses of excellence in aerospace engineering and contemporary aviation systems.

Land has been identified at Bagodara village, situated at a distance of 30 Kms from Ahmedabad, for the development of an Aviation Park by GUJSAIL. The park will resemble a complete eco-systemwhere everything related to the aviation sector is available under one roof. The aviation park complex will harbour a flight simulator, an aviation and aerospace management school, aircrew training school, helipad and landing strip for smaller aircrafts. The first phase of the park is slated to get operational by the end of Fiscal Year 2016-201.

Amit Chavda, GM, Dholera International Airport gave a detailed plan of developing Dholera International airport. Chavda said that this airport will be developed on PPP model. Japanese companies have evinced initial interest

to invest in this airport already. He added that Dholera has good potential to develop in the future as it has potential to expand further once the first phase is over.

The State government has also announced the reduction of tax on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) in a bid to reduce the burden on carriers. The State Sales Tax on ATF will be waived off for regional carriers operating on intra-state levels, chartered air-taxi/heli-taxi operations within the state and on sorties undertaken for training and aero-sports. Further, it will also be waiving off the navigation, parking and landing charges for these carriers. For boosting participation of private entities in setting up intra-state airlines, the State Government will be ensuring booking of limited seats.

Gujarat has already announced the setting up of a single window clearance system for all permissions and approvals under the state government purview for all aviation related activities in the State. The state will also be providing a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) on a case-to-case basis to airport development projects (both passenger and cargo or mix) with low traffic potential. A cost subsidy of 10% will be given to airworthy models to be set up within the proposed aviation park.

Vivek Saxena with the Diamond DA40 NG

Team effort needed to improve value of air cargo

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called for continued transformation in the air cargo industry with a focus on raising the quality of its offering at the opening of the 10th

annual World Cargo Symposium (WCS) in Berlin. The global air cargo sector continues to face a difficult business

environment. The anaemic growth experienced since 2010 continued in 2015 with a 1.9% expansion of volumes. Yields have contracted each year since 2012. IATA estimates that volume growth will increase to 3.0% in 2016. Under pressure from integrators, competing modes of transport (land and sea) and increased cargo capacity in the passenger fleet, yields are expected to fall a further 5.5% in 2016.

“Air cargo continues to be a challenging environment for airlines to keep revenues ahead of costs. The business, however, generates enormous value. Over a third of goods traded internationally—measured by value—are delivered by air cargo. To do that profitably, the air cargo sector must bolster its key strengths of speed and flexibility with modern processes and improved quality. That means transformation,” said Tony

Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO.“Compared to other modes of shipping, air cargo is a premium

service. Yet shippers give the industry a satisfaction rating of only 7 out of 10 on average. That is not good enough. The industry must raise the service quality of air cargo and provide a more personalised customer service,” said Tyler.

Tyler questioned why cargo has not undergone the same thorough transformation process that has reinvigorated the passenger side of the business. “Developments like e-tickets, bar-coded boarding passes, airport self-check-in kiosks and inflight Wi-Fi have transformed the passenger experience. Is it a coincidence that after a decade of change, load factors are at record highs and airlines are finally rewarding their investors with adequate returns? We need similar breakthroughs on the cargo side of the business. There are lots of potential disruptors out there—data-sharing platforms, new market entrants, or e-commerce. The challenge is to stay a step ahead in satisfying customer expectations,” said Tyler.

Diamonds are your best friends

With all companies putting their best foot forward at this years show, Diamond Aircraft Industries is showcasing their

single engine DA40 NG and twin-engine DA 42 aircraft at the show. The DA40 NG is an Austrian four-seat, single engine, light aircraft constructed from composite materials whereas the DA42 is a four seat, twin engine, propeller-driven airplane also made largely of composite materials.

Currently there are about 55 of these aircraft operating in India with a higher percentage of them being the DA40 NG. “Close to 90% of the application of these aircraft in India is for training. But we are seeing a fair amount of interest with more and more people engaging the aircraft for hobby flying and so on,” says Vivek Saxena, CEO, Tribhuvan Technologies (P) Ltd who are the distributors for Diamond Aircraft in India.

Tribhuvan Technologies has also entered into an agreement to set up a manufacturing facility for the HK36 Super Dimona in the South of India including an MRO facility to service aircraft upto the likes of ATR. Although tight-lipped about the location of the facility, it will provide as a global hub supply chain for the Super Dimona aircraft with the capability to produce the complete aircraft. The facility once operational will be able to manufacture around 100 aircraft a year and Saxena is looking at the first aircraft being rolled out of the same by the end of next year. The primary reason for setting up shop here is to reduce the manufacturing cost since the Super Dimona requires a large amount of man hours to assemble.

At the show, the company has received a positive response for the DA40 NG and the DA42 with a number of customers enquiring about the

aircraft as well as looking for demonstration flights.

Both the aircraft are powered by the Austro engine, which is one of the few jet fuel powered engines currently, making it more commercially suitable for customers adds Saxena, “If you look at the category than most of the aircraft use aviation gasoline, which is being phased out due to variety of reasons.” What makes Diamond aircraft interesting is not only that they are powered by jet fuel, but also that it comes with latest technology based on a composite

airframe making them among the safest in the categoryalong with a fully-automated glass cockpit.

As mentioned earlier that the company has sold around 55 aircraft in India currently in the past few years. However Saxena feels that this by no means is the indicator for the time to come since the economy is changing as well as the policies are changing with more and more individuals gaining access to buying private aircraft.

9th Asean Defence Ministers’ meeting on sidelines of LIMA 2015

The defence ministers of all Asean member nations are meeting for a two-day

meeting, which will see several key issues discussed. Defence Minister Dato’ Seri Hishammud-din Hussein is the high profile visitors at the Langkawi Interna-tional Convention Centre, with an informal meeting in the after-noon and an official dinner at the ninth Asean Defence Ministers Meeting (ADMM).

Among the key issues set to be discussed are the threats posed by the Islamic State terrorist organisation and other militant groups, a regional peacekeep-ing force and a regional disaster relief organisation. The ministers will then sign a joint declaration and hold a press conference to announce the declaration.

New Singapore Air Traffic Control Centre unveiledQuantum leap in Singapore’s ATM capability

( L to R) Singapore Minister for Transport, Lui Tuck Yew and Director-General, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Yap Ong Heng, inaugurate the new Singapore Air Traffic Control Centre.

Need for smarter aviation regulation

The Aviation Leadership Summit 2014, held as part of the Singapore Air Show, had as one of its focus areas, the future

of aviation regulation. The basic premise of the discussion was the fact that airlines currently are operating in a hyper-competitive environ-ment, while being subjected to a variety of legal and regulatory regimes. These regimes tend to hold commercial aviation to a different business standard from other forms of business.

Incidentally, 2014 happens to mark the beginning of the second century of commercial aviation. Even so, the widely shared feeling is

that governments, infrastructure providers and suppliers are challenged to come up with creative solutions to sustain the growth of commercial aviation. There is no denying the point that if commercial aviation is to deliver on its potential, all partners in the aviation value chain will need to come out with new, out of the box thinking and an innovative strategy for well-harmonised and coordinated approach.

In his opening address, Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Transport, Singapore Government observed that the civil aviation sector being

Singapore’s Minister for Transport, Lui Tuck Yew, and Director-General, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS),

Yap Ong Heng, officially inaugurated the new Singapore Air Traffic Control Centre (SATCC) on Monday. The ceremony was held during the Singapore Airshow Aviation Leadership Summit 2014 held at the Raffles City Convention Centre.

The new Singapore Air Traffic Control Centre represents a quantum leap in the capacity and ability of CAAS in providing high quality air navigation services for the safety and effi-ciency of the growing air traffic in the Singapore Flight Information Region (FIR).

With the new Centre in full operation, CAAS is future-ready to manage the projected signifi-cantly higher and more complex traffic.

“The new SATCC demonstrates CAAS’ determination to continually enhance our air traffic management capability for the Singapore Flight Information Region and Changi air hub. With the Asia-Pacific aviation market, already the world’s largest and expected to continue to grow strongly, the new Centre ensures that CAAS is ready for the future,” said Yap Ong Heng, Director-General of CAAS.

With the state-of-the-art LORADS III air traffic management system, developed by Thales, the new Centre presents a generational shift in operational capabilities and robustness. These include, more control positions for area and approach control; a paperless (paper strips replaced by electronic versions), highly-auto-mated and integrated environment; technologies and innovative features that exploit advances in aircraft navigational accuracy and functionality.

Bombardier’s C series out of stumbling blocks

Bombardier is also very optimistic about the opportunities in the South-Asia region over the next 20 years. With all

eyes set in this market and its opportunities, the company feels that it has a vast opportunity in this region, with this year setting its growth phase in the coming years.

As per the figures released by the company they estimate a market for 12,700 aircraft in the 60 to 150 seating capacity market over the next 20 years of which close to 700 aircraft are expected to be sold in the South Asian region. Bombardier feels that they are well-positioned to capitalise on this opportunity. With an enormous demand of approximately 26,750 aircraft globally in the next 20 years, the commercial jetliner market has opened up like never before. With a majority of this future demand considered to be for single-aisle aircraft according to most manufacturers, the demand has also brought an opportunity for many.

Bombardier decided to take the plunge in 2004 and go head-on with the likes of Airbus and Boeing in the 110-150 seating capacity segment. After running into challenges and announcing that they wouldn’t go through with the C series programme in January 2006, the company reinstated the program again in 2007 selecting Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engine as the exclusive engine to power the programme. Bombardier soon found interest in 2008 with a letter of interest for 60 aircraft (including 30 options) from Lufthansa and the C Series was officially underway.

However, the programme has run into several delays since its announcement and with the orders for the aircraft drying up, things are finally looking up for Bombardier and its C series. With the CS100 variant receiving certification in December 2015 and scheduled to be delivered to its first customer, Swiss International Airlines in the second quarter of this year. And the CS300 is expected to get certification by the middle of 2017. And with Air Canada placing orders for 75 new aircraft at a discounted price, the programme has seen a

new lease of life. But there’s no denying that pressure still

continues to mount on the manufacturer. Prior to the Air Canada order the company had secured 243 (53 CS100 and 190 CS300) firm orders with the project going over by $2 billion its estimated cost. But with the delivery schedule looking to fall on track in 2016 for the CS100 launch customer, and a certification on the way for the CS300 next year combined with a new order, 2016 seems to be the year for the manufacturer.

Honeywell has a strong presence in aerospace and avionics, and are responsible for 39% of sales. The

company diversified across business lines and geography, with 45% of revenue coming from the U.S.; 32% from other developed countries; and 23% from developing countries, including China and India. The focus is on emerging markets, where sales are rising by 10% a year.

While Honeywell works closely with airlines and OEM’s, Aileen McDowall, Vice President, Airlines Business Middle East and Africa and Sasi Kancharla (Sunny), Customer Business Leader Air Transport & Regional Aerospace – India create awareness about the many products that help airlines grow their business.

On the avionics front, Honeywell’s JetWave is the exclusive hardware for aircraft to connect to Inmarsat’s Global Xpress, the only high-speed broadband satellite network spanning the globe that will provide fast, seamless and reliable connectivity over both land and water.

Says Aileen McDowall, this will provide passengers with the same high-speed Wi-Fi experience they get at home or in the office while traveling at 35,000 feet. JetWave and GX Aviation will enable fliers to have seamless access to onboard Wi-Fi to browse the Internet, check emails, stay connected on social media, watch videos and more, even on transcontinental flights.

The previous KU Band offers 50 mbps while the KA-Band Broadband connectivity offers 3000 mbps, explains Kancharla.

“This JetWave hardware is a leap forward in making the system available commercially and accelerating access to reliable and fast connectivity for airlines and passengers traveling across the world.”

Honeywell scores with smart products

Every commercial aircraft flying in India today has Honeywell technologies on board. Honeywell is the leading supplier of avionics, auxiliary power units (APUs) and service provider for APU repair and overhaul on commercial aircraft on most airlines in India including Air India, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and GoAir.

Honeywell APUs offer superior performance enabling faster turnaround times and quicker cabin cooling enhancing passenger comfort at lower operating and maintenance costs. In the cockpit, Honeywell avionics provide improved situational awareness, maximised safety and optimal flight routes. Honeywell’s IntuVue 3D weather radar with more accurate weather detection at longer ranges, improves strategic rerouting and tactical maneuvering using state-of-the-art technologies that allow pilots to find the most efficient route for improved fuel efficiency and passenger safety. Honeywell’s new line SmartRunway and SmartLanding software upgrades to its popular Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) provide leading safety solutions that reduce the risk of runway incursions and excursions.

Honeywell’s SmartPath – the world’s only FAA-certified Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) has been adopted at more than 15 airports around the world including Chennai, India.

The GBAS technology also helps increase operational efficiency, allowing an aircraft to fly either complex or straight-in approaches, which helps reduce fuel costs and unnecessary flight delays.

“Also unlike ILS, which supports a single precision approach to one runway end, one SmartPath system can simultaneously provide up to 48 separate approaches covering all runway ends. This allows air traffic control to be more flexible with approaches, increasing airport capacity and enabling greater flexibility during different operating conditions. This can increase the number of flights by 50 per cent,” says McDowall.

“Our SmartView synthetic vision system (SVS), the industry leading and proven, says Kancharla. SVS, is a natural and intuitive depiction of flight symbology and 3D terrain on the primary flight display (PFD). It complements lateral and vertical situational views by synthesizing key flight information. Leveraging our experience in human factors and graphics design, SmartView SVS information is delivered to the flight crew in an easy-to-understand manner. Gulf Stream, Embraer, Augusta Westland use SVS,” says Aileen.

A broad global presence is critical to Honeywell’s growth and enables us to better understand and address the challenges that our customers face, says McDowall. Although the products are for the global market we can address the issues of customers in different parts of the world with different weather conditions.

With a strong emphasis on inorganic growth Honeywell is looking to double its revenues. India is a key growth market for the company with strong double digit growth and with strong GDP growth, Honeywell’s operations in the airlines business is likely to see healthy growth.

Big opportunities for Bell Helicopter and Textron Aviation

Bell Helicopter and Textron Aviation Inc., underlined their bullishness of the Indian

market with their joint presence during the India Aviation Exhibition.

“In India, our focus is to build regional connectivity with the Bell Helicopter product line and helicopter operations together with the Caravan and King Air platforms of Textron Aviation,” said Inderjit Sial, President and Managing Director, Textron India. “Bell Helicopter’s relationship with Dynamatic Ltd., for manufacturing parts of the Bell 407 cabin, is actively working toward strengthening the aerospace industry in the region and aligns our vision with the ‘Make in India’ program. In addition, as India’s aviation industry has witnessed growth by 20 percent in 2015, it is expected to get a further boost with the new civil aviation policy. This should help promote the central idea of ease of doing business with a review on operative clearances required for medi-evacuation and helicopter and aircraft

certification process by the DGCA.”Bell Helicopter has maintained

a solid presence in the Asia-Pacific region for more than 30 years, with an installed fleet of more than 1,000 helicopters serving multiple mission segments. “India remains an important region for Bell Helicopter to develope and grow our balanced business,” said Sameer Rehman, Managing Director of Asia Pacific.

“We continue to see a lot of diversity throughout the region, and we are committed to making investments in our aftermarket support offerings and our products to meet the growing needs of our customers.”

Textron Aviation is highlighting its special missions and commercial capabilities and have displayed a special missions-configured Cessna Grand Caravan EX and a Beechcraft King Air 350i.

Textron Aviation continues to penetrate the market in India with its class-leading, innovative and broad product line. From the rugged and

reliable Cessna Caravan to its recently enhanced Beechcraft King Air products, these platforms dominate the turboprop market in India.

A favorite among private and commercial operators in the region is the Cessna Caravan. This rugged utility aircraft was designed for use in remote areas with extreme weather changes, mountainous terrain, and rough landing conditions. In addition to the popular Caravan series, Textron Aviation’s Beechcraft King Air turboprop family is the most widely utilised business aircraft in India with more than 60 aircraft currently in operation throughout the region in roles such as VIP transport, charter operations and air ambulance missions. Known for its reliability, versatility, and dependability, the company recently improved on this proven platform by incorporating new, state-of-the-art technology both in the cockpit and cabin. The new Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics system is now standard equipment for all three - bringing commercial aviation’s first full touchscreen capability to all three main flight displays.

Progress mostly happens in inches, in tweaks, and in increments. But sometimes there’s a shift that changes everything. Those leaps require vision, intelligence, and effort. They require the kind of courage that made flight possible in the first place. It’s this boldness that drives Bombardier’s relentless pursuit of excellence, and has seen us create the cleanest, quietest and most profitable aircraft in the skies.
