It is my pleasure to invite you to the 42nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology (ASHNR) to be held in Toronto at the Toronto Hilton Hotel from Wednesday, September 10th through Sunday, September 14th, 2008. The Program Committee offers a comprehensive and informative review program organized to please the varying levels of experience and comfort in Head and Neck Imaging among the attend-ees, with each day planned to offer “pearls” for everyone. In addition to the background core of head and neck anatomy/pathol-ogy, I would like to highlight specific features of the 2008 program. The program, extended to offer 33.5 hours (the most ever) of Category 1 CME, will feature more than 50 of the leading North American experts in Head and Neck Imaging, augmented by outstanding surgeons from the University of Toronto. A Temporal Bone Study Club for Wednesday morning offers attendees and faculty an opportunity to informally show each other interesting cases. The opening Wednesday afternoon session will feature head and neck emergencies and will highlight critical imaging findings on patients requiring urgent treatment of ENT-craniofacial pathologies. Clinical per-spectives by outstanding ophthalmologic and plastic-reconstructive sur-geons include a panel discussion and question period. The Thursday morning session will feature anatomy and pediatric pre-sentations, vasoformative anomalies and vascular tumors, including en-dovascular treatment capabilities. Thursday afternoon will include pre-sentations on dental anatomy, the maxillary and mandibular arches and temporomandibular joints, complemented by clinical presentations to better understand oral surgical procedures, craniofacial and mandibular reconstructions as well as clinical, imaging and treatment aspects of TMJ disease, including a panel discussion and questions. On Friday morning, our emphasis on the oral cavity will continue with presentations on the oral cavity/oropharynx and adjacent buccal, parapharyngeal, masticator, and parotid spaces. Friday afternoon will be free to enjoy the city. On Saturday morning, neoplasia will be presented, including anatomy and patterns of tumor spread of the nasopharynx and larynx, post-treatment appearances of the larynx and of the neck; PET-CT, and a special Gold Med-al presentation by Dr. Peter M. Som on Inflammation and Cancer. Saturday afternoon will highlight temporal bones and cranial nerves. Sunday morning will emphasize sinonasal diseases as well as presentations on the orbit and olfactory tract. The attendees will have the opportunity to test their acquired knowl-edge with several unknown case review sessions, as well as three cases of the day (with book prizes) to be offered. A Stump the Stars session with three teams of expert panelists offers an opportunity to see how experts approach challenging diagnostic head and neck cases. Three sci-entific paper sessions complement the program. September is a beautiful time of the year to visit Toronto. The city is in full activity. Please make your hotel reservations as soon as possible using the Hotel Registration Form or through the direct link available on the ASHNR website.

Edward E. Kassel, MD President-Elect and Program Chair

At the conclusion of this meeting, the participants should be able to:

1. Recognize clinically relevant findings on imaging studies of pa-tients requiring urgent treatment of pathology involving the neck, upper airway, temporal bones, orbit, skull base and facial bones.

2. Understand the imaging anatomy of the supra and infrahyoid neck including the parapharyngeal, masticator and parotid spaces.

3. Be familiar with anatomy and pathology of the region of the mouth including the maxillary and mandibular dental arches, temporomandibular joints and oral cavity as well as new devel-opments in oral surgical approaches, craniofacial mandibular re-constructions, and clinical and treatment aspects of TMJ disease.

4. Understand the anatomy, malignancy and patterns of tumor spread for the upper aerodigestive tract (naso-oropharynx to larynx) including post-treatment imaging of the larynx and neck.

5. Offer a differential diagnosis for neoplastic and non-neoplastic head and neck mass lesions of the child, and have increased knowledge of vasoformative anomalies, vascular tumors and endovascular treatments.

6. Understand the complex anatomy of the temporal bones and si-nonasal cavities and be able to discuss the more common lesions that involve these anatomic regions, as well as lesions of the orbit and olfactory tract.

Located in Southern Ontario, along Lake Ontario’s northern shore, Toronto—the largest city in Canada and 5th largest in North America, is commonly referred to as the world’s most multicultural city and one of the world’s next great cities. This “megacity” is a melt-ing pot of culture, business and arts. The city sparkles with exciting museums, excellent theater (follows only New York and London), wonderful restaurants, enticing shops, interesting neighborhoods and a lively waterfront. The temperature in September is ideal for daily strolls- explore nearby boutiques and cafes along Queen Street West, Front Street E., St. Lawrence Market or the Distillery District, or to the lakefront for Queen’s Quay shops, jogging trails, or a boat trip to the Toronto Island parks. Walk a few blocks to the huge Eaton Center shopping complex, or to the Entertainment District, CN Tower, or the Roger’s Centre – home of the Toronto Blue Jays, or a 2-minute subway ride, from just outside the Hilton Toronto Hotel to the Bloor–Yorkville upscale shops, restaurants and museums. The city’s cultural diversity is just around the corner – Chinatown, Greek-town, Little Italy, the Fashion District, Gay Village or Little India. The city is safe, with an extremely low crime rate, and an excellent pub-lic transportation system. Take time to enjoy the city – its theater, museums, sports entertainment, and shops, but don’t overlook its greatest strength—its inner city vitality and local neighborhoods offering unique shopping and dining establishments. The acclaimed Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will coincide with our meet-ing dates, augmenting your entertainment and star-gazing options. You never know who may be standing next to you. Just like the Hu-ron peoples named the city more than 250 years ago – “ To’ron’ to’- Place of Meeting” – is yours to enjoy. (See the ASHNR website for more information about the city and its attractions. www.ashnr.org)

Realizing that those coming from a greater distance or from the west coast may need to arrive the previous evening in order to be present for the early afternoon program commencement, we have arranged a Temporal Bone Study Club for the latter part of Wednesday morning (10:45 am until noon, with CME credits offered) as an opportunity for attendees including faculty to show each other interesting cases. The very capable Drs. Joel D. Swartz, H. Ric Harnsberger and Susan I. Blaser will moderate this session. All images presented must be in digital format either on a USB or CD with no access for viewing hard copy film. Alternatively, one may forward such cases to Dr. Edward E. Kassel, Program Chair ([email protected]) to be preloaded, and listed under your name for the study session. Please restrict the number of images as each case will be limited to approximately 3-4 minutes including discussion. Individuals will initially be allowed to show a maximum of 2 consecutive cases to allow as many colleagues as possible to participate, with possible opportunity to show further cases toward the end of the session.

Step back in time as you explore the former estate of Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, a prominent Toronto financier, industrialist and military man. An unabashed romantic, Sir Henry engaged the noted architect E.J. Lennox to help him realize a life-long dream - the creation of a ‘medieval’ castle on the brow of a hill overlooking Toronto. Begun in 1911, it took 300 men nearly 3 years to complete and cost $3,500,000 at that time. Sir Henry enjoyed Casa Loma for less than 10 years before financial mis-fortune forced him to abandon his castle home. Take the opportunity to explore this intriguing legacy of an extraordinary Canadian by touring the castle, visiting the gardens, or enjoying the view from the terrace during our reception before our dinner.
