AutobiographyMy name is Ashley Pollard. I am a North Carolina native with a huge family and a passion for people. Baseball is my favorite sport. Country music is my favorite genre, and I drink my tea from a mason jar. I love reading and travelling, and you can find me at a fishing hole most summer nights.
I grew in a small town outside of Greensboro, North Carolina, and attended the same small, private school for about 15 years. I was always, and still am the bookish one of my friends. I love school, and I love writing papers. Every time my friends and I take a Harry Potter quiz, I’m sorted into Ravenclaw. I am the definition of a nerd, and I am proud of that. However, I am more than just a bookworm. I’m a jock, a sports fanatic, a humanitarian, a dog-lover, a girly-girl, and an all-around passionate and ambitious person.
In high school, I was involved in everything, and I learned a lot of valuable skills from my involvement such as leadership and cooperation.
However, the most valuable thing that I learned in high school was not in the classroom, but on a mission trip. I visited the island of Trinidad on a mission trip my sophomore year of high school. While there, I spent time with children in orphanages and juvenile prison. This experience opened my eyes to the suffering within the world, and helped me realize that I must spend my time helping others.
I came to UNC in the Fall of 2013. I honestly had no idea what I was going to major in, I just knew I wanted to go to law school and that law schools don’t care what your undergraduate major was. It was in the Spring semester that I discovered the field of public relations. As a public relations major, I have been able to take APPLES courses and help non-profits such as Movement of Youth solve their communications problems so they might better serve the community. While I still plan on going to law school, I have been able to pursue my love of helping people through my education in public relations.
Statement of IntentI plan to complete my undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I will graduate in the Spring of 2017 with a B.A. in Media and Journalism with a focus in public relations, as well as a B.A. in U.S. History with a minor in Social and Economic Justice. Upon graduation, I hope to attend law school where I will pursue a J.D. in constitutional law. I have also considered taking a few years off before law school to work in public relations for non-profits. I plan to come to a decision about this over the summer.
My hopes are to practice law in the state of North Carolina. I plan to specialize in the First Amendment, and work in the non-profit sector. I have also considered working in private practice, and taking pro-bono cases for those in need. My experience in the Journalism school has shaped my interest in First Amendment law, and has shown me the value of this constitutional right. I plan to pursue this interest and use my legal degree to help non-profits.

TypographyFor this project we were required to create a poster for a type foundary. The goal was to create an interesting design using only type and graphic elements. I chose Anatoletype, because the script was visually appealing to me. Because the script seemed very elegant, I decided to use type and graphic elements to further commit to the script’s sense of elegance.

Poster SeriesThis assignment required us to choose an organization on UNC-CH’s campus
and create a poster for one of their past events. For my project I decided to
partner with Phi Beta Chi, one of the Panhellenic sororities on campus. The
event was called Breakfast for Bethesda, and is a pancake dinner benefitting
Phi Beta Chi’s philanthropy. Because past advertisements for this event
include diner and picnic themes, I decided to take a different route and
created a piece inspired by “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

Poster Series
This was the second part of the poster series project. This half required us to
work with the same organization and create a social media graphic and flyer
for one of their upcoming events. Again, my organization was Phi Beta Chi,
and I created a social media graphic and flyer for their annual charity golf
tournament. During this project, I really wanted to capture the feel for the
game, so I studied the covers of golf magazines for inspiration.

InfographicFor this project we were assigned to create an information graphic that answered a
“how?” question. I chose to study how women compare to men in the field of law.
I chose my color combination to distinguish genders, and chose the dark navy as
a soft, contrasting background. I decided to add a Sandra Day O’Connor quote in
the center because she was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of
the United States.

Visual IdentityFor this assignment we were asked to create a visual identity for
ourselves. This included creating a letterhead, a business card,
and a logo for ourselves. I arranged my initials in different ways
until I found one that fit my personality. When idiating the color
scheme, I thought of my personality and chose colors and graphic
elements accordingly.
