AShLAND UNIVERSITY ThEATRECOMEDY ON STAGE AND SCREENThis season features four great stories which experienced commercial and critical successes as both stage productions and Hollywood films. From romantic comedies to farce, satire and a horror musical, join us for a season of humor and fun.

BUS STOPby William IngeDirected by Ric Goodwin

September 27, 28, 29, October 4, 5, 6 at 7:30 p.m. September 30 at 2:00 p.m., Studio TheatreTalkback: after October 5 performance.School Matinee: October 4, 9:00 a.m. ($2 per seat, call 419.289.5950 to reserve)

On Broadway in 1955 to the Big Screen in 1956:In this romantic comedy, a freak snow storm forces a passenger bus to have an unexpected layover in a Kansas road-side diner. Romantic relationships and friendships ensue while lives intersect among these eight ordinary yet quirky characters.

ThE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNESTby Oscar WildeDirected by Teresa Durbin-Ames

November 2, 3, 9, 10 at 7:30 p.m. November 4 at 2:00 p.m. hugo Young TheatreTalkback: after November 9 performance.School Matinee: November 9, 9:00 a.m.

($2 per seat, call 419.289.5950 to reserve)

On Broadway in 1895 to the Big Screen in 1952:This masterpiece is probably the most famous of all comedies. Part satire, part comedy of manners and part intellectual farce, it revolves wittily around the most ingenious case of “manufactured” mistaken identity ever put into a play. It presents a world that is so blatantly and ostentatiously artificial while taking aim at self-righteous moralism and hypocrisy.

“The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Modern life would be very tedious if it were either, and modern literature a complete impossibility.” —Algernon

LITTLE ShOP OF hORRORSBook and Lyrics by Howard Ashman Music by Alan Menken Directed by Fabio Polanco

February 22, 23, March 1, 2 at 7:30 p.m. February 24 at 2:00 p.m., hugo Young TheatreTalkback: after March 1 performance. School Matinee: March 1, 9:00 a.m. ($2 per seat, call 419.289.5950 to reserve)

From the Big Screen in 1960 to Off-Broadway in 1982:This comedy horror rock musical is an affectionate spoof of the 1950s, sci-fi movies starring a hapless floral shop worker who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite.

A LIFE IN ThE ThEATREby David MametCo-Directed by Nathaniel Sayatovich & Ric Goodwin

April 10, 11, 12, 13 at 7:30 p.m. April 14 at 2:00 p.m., Studio TheatreTalkback: after April 12 performance.

Off-Broadway in 1977 to a television movie in 1993:Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Mamet takes us into the lives of two actors: one is young and rising into the first flush of his success; the other is older, anxious and beginning to wane. This comedy about the artifice of acting portrays a professional relationship, and a shifting balance of power between an aging, less-than-successful veteran and an eager, often clumsy rookie. As the play goes on, they are involved in a variety of productions, and gradually their relationship begins to change.
