Continuing the Process By The Rev. Jeffrey C. Hayes As we wrap up our summer emphasis on worship, fellowship, and ministry allow me to thank all of you who have contributed to our various events. I’m positive there are many wonderful stories to be told! On a personal note, I have enjoyed preaching through the Connect, Grow, Discover, Serve series. But remember friends this is not just a series of sermons for our summer. This is our process for making disciples of Christ. To that end, let me share the following encouraging stories and personal challenges: Connect: This past Sunday following our VBS service I listened as Gilmer and Jo Johnson connected with a young couple over a slice of pizza in the Candler Center. The young couple are the parents of a little girl in our CEC who also attended VBS. Both Gilmer and Jo found a number of connections with this couple, including growing up in the same town, which provided them an instant relationship. Who are you reaching out to and trying to connect with? Can you name someone God has placed in your path to witness to? Are you connecting with God on a daily basis and listening to his leading? If not, why? Grow: Speaking about The Good and Beautiful God, Ginny Berrier commented how the book study has shed light for her on new ways to learn about God. Joan McCook added that it has taught her many lessons about how she spends her time. It’s been amazing to hear stories about how God is working in the lives of people in our church. Growing in our faith is a life-long pursuit and is essential to our becoming better followers of Christ. Are you spending regular time in worship and personal study with prayer? What areas of your life need growth? Are there action steps you are taking to make growth in Christ a priority in your life? Discover: I’m always thrilled to see people discover their God-given gifts and then put them to use. Such is the case for Tom and Michelle Mattox. Whether it be their work with the Correctional Facility or volunteering with VBS, their generous and compassionate spirits can be seen in the ministries they are involved with. Both will be the first to tell you when they don’t feel God is leading them to do something, but when the Lord does, it is evident through their work that he has enabled them and is using them for his glory. Can you name your spiritual gifts? If so, are you putting them to work for God’s Kingdom? If not, how can you discover your gifts? Serve: Whether it be Erin Conaty’s tireless efforts with Room In The Inn or Annette Perkins answering the call to help with VBS or Mona Moore’s faithful presence greeting each Sunday or any one of the many people who have worked diligently with Calvary’s Garden, service can be seen all around us. Jesus came to serve and expects the same of us. Are you involved in an area of service? Where is God at work in the world around you and how might you be involved in that work? Certainly I could name others who fit into the aforementioned areas. As the Fall season approaches, let us continue to work toward making this process a reality in our church by connecting ourselves and others with God, growing in our relationships, discovering our gifts, and serving our neighbors. Continuing the Process

By The Rev. Jeffrey C. Hayes

As we wrap up our summer emphasis on worship, fellowship,

and ministry allow me to thank all of you who have contributed to our various events.

I’m positive there are many wonderful stories to be told! On a personal note, I have enjoyed

preaching through the Connect, Grow, Discover, Serve series. But remember friends this is not just

a series of sermons for our summer. This is our process for making disciples of Christ. To that end, let

me share the following encouraging stories and personal challenges:

Connect: This past Sunday following our VBS service I listened as Gilmer and Jo Johnson connected with a

young couple over a slice of pizza in the Candler Center. The young couple are the parents of a little girl in our CEC who also

attended VBS. Both Gilmer and Jo found a number of connections with this couple, including growing up in the same town, which

provided them an instant relationship. Who are you reaching out to and trying to connect with? Can you name someone God has placed in

your path to witness to? Are you connecting with God on a daily basis and listening to his leading? If not, why?

Grow: Speaking about The Good and Beautiful God, Ginny Berrier commented how the book study has shed light for her on new

ways to learn about God. Joan McCook added that it has taught her many lessons about how she spends her time. It’s been amazing to hear

stories about how God is working in the lives of people in our church. Growing in our faith is a life-long pursuit and is essential to our

becoming better followers of Christ. Are you spending regular time in worship and personal study with prayer? What areas of your life

need growth? Are there action steps you are taking to make growth in Christ a priority in your life?

Discover: I’m always thrilled to see people discover their God-given gifts and then put them to use. Such is the case for Tom and

Michelle Mattox. Whether it be their work with the Correctional Facility or volunteering with VBS, their generous and compassionate

spirits can be seen in the ministries they are involved with. Both will be the first to tell you when they don’t feel God is leading them to do

something, but when the Lord does, it is evident through their work that he has enabled them and is using them for his glory. Can you name

your spiritual gifts? If so, are you putting them to work for God’s Kingdom? If not, how can you discover your gifts?

Serve: Whether it be Erin Conaty’s tireless efforts with Room In The Inn or Annette Perkins answering the call to help with VBS

or Mona Moore’s faithful presence greeting each Sunday or any one of the many people who have worked diligently with Calvary’s

Garden, service can be seen all around us. Jesus came to serve and expects the same of us. Are you involved in an area of service? Where

Back to School Shoe Boxes

As we approach August and the beginning of the school year, you may have noticed that area merchants have

begun their “Back-tol-School-sales”. This is an excellent time to stock-up on items for our annual Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes. School supplies make great gifts for the children and you can purchase those at reduced prices during the sales. Pen, pencils, notebooks, erasers, crayons, etc. There are also summer items on clearance such as T-shirts, as stores make room for fall merchandise. We will also need (small) toys, candy and personal care items such as soap, toothpaste and tooth brushes and wash cloths as we used up all our supplies in the last pack-a-box party.
