In an effort to garner broader input on which of Asheville’s dining and drinking establishments to highlight, our Eats & Drinks writers enlisted the help of small, focused, local panels from various walks of life to con-tribute their considered opinions. Panelists included an A-B Tech culi-nary and pastry program graduate, parents with an eye for family-friendly restaurants, food and wine bloggers, veterans of Asheville’s restaurant world and home brewers who know their hops.

Many thanks to the following for their time, expertise and willingness to share their thoughts:

Slow-cooked, patiently prepared, and with a focus on regional ingredi-ents, the Appalachian and local cuisine of Asheville not only tells the story of the South as a whole, but also of the city itself.

Few men are more entrenched in Southern cuisine and culture than Chef Michael Moore. Founder of the Blind Pig Supper Club and a for-mer workhorse for The Admiral, Moore opened Seven Sows Bourbon & Larder downtown to satiate his desire to focus on the more obscure side of our regional palate. Buttermilk hushpuppies with pimento cheese share the menu with pig’s head meatloaf and crispy chicken livers made with Cruze buttermilk. A penchant for adventure helps with this uncon-ventional menu, and a great bourbon list provides some liquid courage.

For another high-end, yet unequivocally Southern meal, you’d be remiss to skip downtown’s Table. James Beard Award semifinalist Chef Jacob Ses-soms heads up the kitchen at one of Asheville’s most beloved restaurants. Revolving around local, seasonal fare, Table demonstrates quality and class. Whether it’s chicken sausage with dumplings, or a rabbit hotdog with hon-ey mustard, Table’s menu changes daily and is always indicative of its roots. Be sure to try some of their spectacular house-made charcuterie as well.

A few blocks away, Star Chefs award winner Chef William Dissen isn’t just leaving his mark on local Southern food through his work with the Southern Foodways Alliance, he’s serving it up at his long-running farm-to-table res-taurant, The Market Place Restaurant. It’s hard to go wrong with their Ben-ton’s bacon mac and cheese or a pan-roasted quail with cornbread stuffing.

For something casual, The Lowdown food truck may be a bit hard to track down, but just check twitter (@thelowdowntruck) or their Web page — or look for the lines in front of this Southern roots mobile kitchen. It’s hard to choose among pumpkin-pesto grilled pimento cheese; peanut butter, banana and Nutella; or their pulled-pork barbecue sandwiches — but with Southern comfort food like this, you’ll be glad you toughed it out.

Local hideaway HomeGrown’s motto is “slow food, right quick.” Serving local ingredients in a casual, quaint environment, with dishes like butter-milk fried chicken, “Redneck Pot Pie” — a dish of cheesy grits, barbecue chicken and biscuits — or a tempeh barbecue for the vegetarian diner, it’s a quick and easy lunch spot in North Asheville for those in a rush.

If you have a penchant for barbecue, you might want to try the president’s local favorite, 12 Bones Smokehouse. The highly praised barbecue pit in the River Arts District (which also has a South Asheville location) has served President Barack Obama on two occasions. Another spot close to downtown for a pig-fix is Luella’s Bar-B-Que, where dry-rubbed ribs and a mac-and-hoop-cheese side is the order of the day. Or drop in at an Asheville institution, Little Pigs, near Biltmore, which has been serving its pulled pork to locals since 1963.

Going out to eat can be a challenge for vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free diners. Luckily, a number of Asheville restaurants have adopted hab-its and menu items that serve those with dietary restrictions. Our expert local panel points the way to some local jewels.

The award for the most dedication goes to Plant, with its entirely vegan menu. The North Asheville restaurant serves first-class vegan cuisine with perfect presentation and execution. In just three years of business, it has already received both national and local acclaim as one of the best res-taurants for diners who avoid animal products. Topping off its menu of healthy plant-based dishes, Plant also offers a plethora of vegan desserts — including delectable ice cream.

Plant is to the vegan crowd what Posana Cafe is to gluten-free diners. In the heart of downtown, Posana is one of Asheville’s only certified gluten-free restaurants. Everything on its menu, save for the beer on tap and certain specialty drinks, is gluten-free. The wait staff is friendly, knowl-edgeable and willing to accommodate any other dietary restriction as well. With its stylish decor, outdoor seating and elaborate menu, this is a fine-dining experience for all eaters.

For a casual lunch, consider downtown’s Thai Orchid. Traditional Thai food has many options sans meat, dairy and gluten, which is also good news for folks trying to avoid all the substitutes that can sometimes bog down other dishes or cuisines.

Sometimes, though, substitutes are simply necessary. Who would expect anyone to go without pizza? And just because you’re gluten-free or vegan does not mean you should sacrifice taste, even when it comes to pizza, a traditionally bready and cheesy favorite. Fresh Wood Fired Pizza and Pasta in Black Mountain offers one of the cheapest, best-tasting gluten-free crusts in the area. The best part? They’re made in-house. And there’s a sweet story behind it, too. The owners’ daughter developed a gluten in-tolerance and her parents, seeing how difficult it could be to eat out with a gluten-free diet, promised her that they would offer a gluten-free crust at their restaurant. Fresh also offers tasty cheese and meat substitutes as vegan pizza toppings, which you can enjoy on their outdoor patio.

Perhaps surprisingly, the new Farm Burger downtown is accommodat-ing to the non-carnivorous variety of burger lovers as well. With tasty gluten-free burger buns, delecta-ble vegan burgers, and meats and other ingredients from local farm-ers, this restaurant is not just for meat eaters.

The Hop, the classic ice cream shop with two locations — in West Asheville and North Asheville — rates a mention, because who doesn’t love a wide variety of vegan ice cream?

DININg wITh DogSASHEV I L L E EATER I ES WELCOME d INERS ’ CANINE pALS

by TONI SHERWOOd

Many dog lovers like to take their furry children with them everywhere, in-cluding restaurants. Around Asheville, there are plenty of great outdoor din-ing areas that welcome people and their canine companions.

Good food, people watching and friendly, accommodating staff are at the top of dog lovers’ lists. One casual-dining favorite is White Duck Taco Shop. Located in the River Arts District near downtown Asheville, this gourmet taco eatery has lots of outdoor seating with umbrellas for shade. There’s plenty of room for dogs to stretch out beneath picnic tables while their owners dine on reasonably priced tacos, house-made soups and chips and salsa. The specials change often, including the margaritas.

At City Bakery Café downtown, diners can spot local canine star, “Maggie the Wonder Dog.” Maggie is a Jack Russell terrier who has appeared on “Oprah,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Live! With Regis & Kelly” and “Animal Planet.” With great people watching, de-licious pastries, dedicated parking spots and a city garage across the street, it’s easy to see why canine celebrities flock to the bakery.

But sometimes dog owners want a little more high-end fare. “A good dog place is also good for people,” panelist Sheila Thibodeaux says. As a service-dog owner, she describes Posana Café as “a step above other places you go with your dog.” Although dogs must sit on the

outside of the railing, the Posana’s Pack Square location, with its ever-changing array of musicians and performers, is the ultimate in people-watching coupled with fine dining. All of Posana’s locally inspired seasonal fare is also surprisingly gluten-free.

With two outdoor seating areas, Mayfel’s ranks high among dog owners. There’s a covered patio in front and The Courtyard Bar in back, with a separate entry off Wall Street. When panelist Felicia Dickson took a friend with a three-legged dog there, servers brought treats and water and were very accommodating. And Mayfels’ New Orleans-influenced comfort food draws raves. “The fried green to-matoes are insane,” Dickson says.

Salsa’s outdoor area is a semi-enclosed alleyway on the west side of the restaurant. This secluded nook is a great place for a more timid dog or an owner wanting a break from the street traffic. Panelist Hank Eder notes: “The chef will personalize your dish based on di-etary restrictions.” The Mexican-Caribbean cuisine is prepared with local produce and changes with the seasons.

The Grove Arcade is like the Sunset Strip of canine-friendly eater-ies, with many choices and all with outdoor seating areas along Page Avenue, including Modesto, Carmel’s Kitchen & Bar, Chorizo, Thai Tara, Burgerworx, True Confections and Santé Wine Bar & Tap Room.

By far, a fan favorite for outdoor eating is the charming and en-chanted courtyard nook at Creperie Bouchon. Tucked behind the restaurant, this brick patio is off the main drag, offering great ambi-ence and delicious gluten-free crepes. You and your canine pal will feel like you’ve been to France and back, but without the pricey plane ticket and uncomfortable pet carrier.

When you’re in the mood for something tasty and quick, a range of restau-rants can satisfy your need for speed — without resorting to fast food. Our panelists offered inside info on the best quick bites to be found downtown and around town.

Starting with the scrumptious Clingman Cafe, the pioneer restaurant in the River Arts District has been joined by many of Asheville’s best quick bites. The wood-fired pizza and stellar sandwiches at All Souls Pizza are made with as many local ingredients as possible, including flour and polenta milled by the res-taurant itself. Pizza Pura, right around the corner, offers a different take on pizza: Neopolitan-style. Tacos more your thing? White Duck Taco Shop serves up creative varieties like banh mi tofu and spicy Buffalo chicken, while Taqueria con Cuida, inside The Grey Eagle, serves up more traditional tacos alongside the live music. As if that weren’t enough, The Junction offers stellar small plates. And there’s a food truck at Wedge Brewing Co. every night of the week.

Downtown, if you’re on the hunt for food but it’s well after dinnertime, there’s a reason Rosetta’s Kitchen has been a longtime go-to place. It’s hard to beat favorites like their peanut-butter tofu and sweet tater fries (and they’re served until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday). Plus, Rosetta’s cake slices are large enough to qualify as a late-night meal in themselves. Lexington Avenue Brewery and Barley’s Taproom & Pizzeria are also open until 2 a.m. most nights if you’re around downtown and in the mood for pizza, pub grub or meatier fare — and both can quickly turn out an order even when they’re busy.

If you’re on the west side, Haywood Road from the WALK (West Asheville Lounge and Kitchen) to Universal Joint is very late-night friendly, and there are some excellent chicken wings to be had. Speaking of wings, King James

Public House on Charlotte Street has a few reasons to head north for a late-night snack: duck wings, frites, pork rinds and more are available until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Of course, the morning after a long night calls for food as fast as possible in the morning. Everyone has their own favorite remedy, and if a steaming bowl of noodles is your cure-all, Pho ‘R’ Us in South Asheville is the way to go. It’s hot, fresh, and there’s hardly ever a wait.

When it comes to a full-on breakfast, you probably want a hearty one at Sunny Point Café in West Asheville or Over Easy Café downtown. If you can’t bear the weekend wait, before succumbing to a chain restaurant, try hitting up Katuah Market in Biltmore Village for the ultimate in instant gratification. Its breakfast bar has some of the best variety in town, from fluffy blueberry pancakes and local sausage to scrambled eggs with cheese and tempeh bacon. (There’s also healthier stuff if you’re into that.) There’s also newcomer Biscuit Head in West Asheville. It can get busy, but the waits are generally on the short side — and who can say no to that jam bar?

SIp AND ShAREWHERE COffEE ANd TEA ARE MORE THAN JuST dR INKS

by ELIzAbETH REyNOLdS MCguIRE

If you’re looking for that quintessential urban experience, look no further than World Coffee Café in the historic Flatiron Building in downtown Asheville. Here you can sip on a latte or some house-made tea while you watch the world go by. Enjoy delicious pastries and sandwiches with a friend at an outdoor table in the heart of all of the action, or find a cozy little corner to read or work, surrounded by exotic, globally-inspired decor.

Across the river, Waking Life has quickly become a favorite hangout in West Asheville. A converted bungalow sets the tone for a relaxed, homey atmosphere, and the coffee is rich and dark — simply superb, according coffee connoisseurs. But don’t forget to try the tea. Black tea served on ice tastes deeper than most iced teas. It’s the perfect refreshing drink for cooling down on their front porch on a steamy afternoon.

The unique stone façade of Filo in East Asheville beckons all to enter through the big, castlelike doors. Inside the historic building is a huge, open space, filled with a warm, glowing light from large, warehouse-style windows — giving off a bright, alive and cozy feeling. Grab a piece of cake or pie and settle down in one of the sofas, or sit at a table with a friend. Make sure to try any of Filo’s specialty lattes — there is never anyone who is disappointed.

come patrons of all kinds to spend an afternoon reading a book, work-ing, studying or just chatting. Come late in the day for games, music and meeting some new friends. The cozy cafe is located on The Block, the historic African-American business district centered around Eagle and Market streets.

There’s also a little, red cottage café and coffee roasters just south of Biltmore Village on Hender-sonville Road that serves delicious coffee with a heart. Not only does Biltmore Coffee Traders roast and brew its direct-trade coffee in-house, but they do so knowing that customers can feel good about drinking their coffee. Stop by and become a regular. Grab a home-made, gluten-free peanut butter cookie and be on your way by using Biltmore Coffee’s drive-through window. Or sit down for a while and get to know the owners, who will quickly become friends.

There is nothing like sipping on a cup of coffee or tea while reading a book. Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe is the go-to coffeehouse and bookstore in downtown Asheville. Support independent bookstores and organic, fair-trade coffee all at the same time when

DATE NIghTASHEV I L L E ’S MOST ROMANT IC d IN INg SpOTS

by TONI SHERWOOd

“Romantic” dining can be what you want it to be — an intimate, quiet ex-perience or one that’s coupled with fun and romantic things to do nearby.

Nine Mile is a small, busy bistro featuring Caribbean-inspired dishes combined with traditional pasta dishes and daily specials. Best of all, couples can stroll hand-in-hand around historic Montford after dinner. “Good food is romantic,” panelist Felicia Dickson says, “I had the best zucchini pasta I’ve ever had in my life at Nine Mile, and I’m Italian.”

The historic Omni Grove Park Inn invites romance with its cavernous fireplaces and front-porch rocking chairs. The Sunset Terrace offers outdoor dining with a stunning view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and downtown Asheville. The food is classic American, featuring hand-cut steaks and seafood. Panelist Richard Inman says, “You feel like Vanderbilt himself.” Of course if it’s really going well on your date, you can always get a room.

From Limones Restaurant it’s an easy walk to the Fine Arts Theatre, the Diana Wortham Theatre and the Asheville Art Museum. The inno-vative Mexican-inspired menu changes often; past favorites include the grilled romaine salad, and spare ribs with risotto. Soft lighting, booths, and excellent service bring diners back. Be sure to try a specialty drink like mojitos or peach-chipotle margaritas.

For others, a romantic meal is comfortable seating and a quiet atmosphere. “Romance is being able to talk to my husband,” panelist Nancy Merrill says.

The Market Place stands out for great acoustics, well-informed staff, exquisite food, and soft lighting. Specializing in American farm-to-table cuisine, this is the best of Asheville’s locally sourced meats and produce.

“To say, ‘Let me take you to a French restaurant’, that’s romantic,” panelist Shelia Thibodeaux says. Bouchon is a favorite destination for many couples. “You know everything you order will be delicious,” Thibodeaux adds. Couples enjoy the social atmosphere and recom-mend sitting at the bar if it ’s crowded. The trout salad and French onion soup are fan favorites.

It may not look too inviting from the exterior, but The Admiral was a top recommendation for romance; a unique combination of gour-met food with a dive-bar atmosphere, the inventive dishes make it memorable. Panelist Rigel Pawlak says, “It ’s Nuevo gourmet cuisine, stuff you won’t find anywhere else.” Pawlak appreciates that there’s no need to dress up. There’s also a jukebox and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights.

Another important aspect for romance is sharing plates, and trying new experiences.

With belly dancers and live music on Saturdays, Jerusalem Garden Cafe is a fun and unique night out. “It looks like the sultan’s tent inside with fabric hanging from ceiling,” Panelist Hank Eder says. Eder recommends sharing a Greek-style salad for two and a kabob.

Many couples named Zambra as their favorite spot. “There are se-cluded booths with pillows, it ’s really comfy,” panelist Tamiko Am-brose Murray says. “It ’s tapas, so you’re sharing food and sampling things together.” The comfy seating, cozy nooks, friendly and atten-tive service and low lighting make Zambra a top choice for romance.

Despite Asheville’s “Beer City” reputation, if you find yourself over-hopped or in want of something stronger, there are a handful of cocktail and wine options that are sure to please even the most sophisticated pal-ate. The newly burgeoning cocktail scene has seen a lot of growth as of late, with the number of craft-cocktail-focused joints nearly quadrupling since 2012. And those cocktails are a welcome addition to an already-thriving wine scene.

Tucked just above the oft-praised farm-to-table restaurant Table is its elegant and beautiful cocktail bar and charcuterie, The Imperial Life. Boutique bourbons sit next to more adventurous spirits like Batavia Ar-rack on the stylish, yet surprisingly unpretentious, bar made of reclaimed bowling-alley wood. Whether you’re looking for a classic Old Fashioned or something new, the cocktail menu is constantly changing and reliably consistent. Add to that an immaculate wine list of some of the most ob-scure and hard-to-find vintages and varietals, The Imperial Life is sure to satisfy even the most discerning oenophile or tippler.

MG Road, named for the ubiquitous main street in India, Mahatma Gandhi Road, takes a completely different twist on cocktails. Nestled along the picturesque Wall Street, Jesse Ratliff, Cynthia Turner and crew

stir and shake a slew of India-themed cocktails utilizing the incredibly deep spice closet of their partner restaurant Chai Pani, a local Indian street food favorite. Just across the street, Cucina 24 not only boasts its well-touted chef Brian Canipelli, but can also brag about Donnie Pratt’s insanely meticulous cocktails. Featured in Gaz Regan’s 101 Best Cock-tails of 2013, Pratt’s list changes seasonally and features a mix of classics and original creations.

While downtown, you might want to check out Top of the Monk, another joint cocktail venture located above its parent company, beer giant Thirsty Monk. The speakeasy-themed bar boasts pre-Prohibition libations and techniques as well as a complimentary bite of food with each tipple. Or, if wine is more your poison for the evening, it is impos-sible to go wrong with 5 Walnut Wine Bar. An extensive bottle list sits alongside a generous list of $5 specials (usually two reds and two whites) along with $7-$8 features. The cozy bar is always packed with a friendly crowd, amiable servers and regularly features free local music acts, usually of the jazz-oriented variety.

Venture farther west and you’ll find yourself in the River Arts District. If you’re already full of beer, you might skip Wedge Brewing — although I don’t recommend missing it — and head next door to The Bull and Beg-gar. Charlie Hodge is a transplant from the West Coast, where he helped cocktail legend Jeffrey Morgenthaler open the now-legendary Clyde Common in Portland, Ore. Dedicatedly traditional, both the cocktails and the wine are perfectly suited and paired for the classic and mostly Southern menu.

Asheville has no shortage of bakeries, cafes and dessert shops. But a panel of local, self-described experts has some clear favorites.

Topping their list is Donatelli Cake Designs on Haywood Street in downtown Asheville. Many on the panel agreed: Karen Donatelli makes the “best European pastries, the best cakes, and the best desserts” in town. Stocked with more wondrous and tasty items than any person (or, frankly, a group of people) could possibly consume, Donatelli’s pastry case is just plain beautiful. But it’s not all eye-candy. Folks rave mainly over the taste and textures of the various croissants (plain, almond and chocolate), fruit tarts and brioche. The coffee is excellent, as are the plated desserts that Donatelli bakers will create for you upon request. For one local patron, a visit “feels like a treat,” and a local chef and restaurant owner concurred, noting that the bakery is perfect for “people who know what quality is.” Ms. Donnatelli’s cakes are unrivaled. Whether for a big event, dinner party or simply because you want to treat yourself at home, a cake design by Donatelli makes the perfect dessert.

One of the most popular hot spots for after-dinner desserts is the French Broad Chocolate Lounge. Whether you feel like a quick bite of truffle or prefer to relax with a coffee and crème brûlée, the lounge manifests an ambiance that is at once elegant and luxurious. “Drinking” chocolates are a unique favorite: Basically, the inside of the truffle is served in a small

teacup, accompanied by a spoon. It tastes like the thickest, richest hot chocolate ever made. The lounge also offers cakes, tortes, brownies and a wide selection of cookies and macaroons. French Broad also serves wine and beer, so parents can order an after-dinner drink while the kids get dessert. One local parent loves the Pisgah a la mode, an ice-cream float made with stout beer from Pisgah Brewing Co., and recommends the lounge as a great place to take guests and visitors from out-of-town. “Ev-erybody’s happy, and you can’t go wrong.”

Whether you prefer its downtown or West Asheville location, The Hop is the go-to ice cream joint. Always a great place for kids of all ages, The Hop serves up homemade ice cream, often augmenting the traditional standards with innovative and tasty flavors, such as Thai Curry, Blueberry Kale, Breakfast Club and Strawberry Balsamic. Ice cream can come with any number of toppings and sauces (most of which are made in-house), and it can be added to a phletora of shakes, sundaes and smoothies. The Hop also makes sorbets and vegan ice cream for those who prefer to skip

the dairy. The shops themselves are great for families and larger groups; the servers are very friendly; and there’s often music or some type of live entertainment for kids. Plus, you can always take pints and gal-lons of ice cream home with you.

Other spots with notable desserts and sweet things include West End Bakery, Chai Pani, Sunny Point Café and Short Street Cakes.

Even when you live in a great restaurant town like Asheville, it’s easy to find yourself in a bit of a rut.

Seven-year resident Shelia Thibodeaux says, “If you want to get out of a rut, go back to basics — places that have been here for a long time.” Her hus-band Richard Inman recommends Asheville Pizza & Brewing on Mer-rimon Avenue. “You can prop your feet on the sofas. It’s a different movie experience,” Inman says. With unique gourmet pizzas, local beers and a family-friendly atmosphere, this alternative movie theater draws raves.

Also located on Merrimon, Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian is another top choice. “Great staff — it’s like Cheers,” panelist Nancy Merrill says. Vinnie’s serves up generous portions of Italian favorites such as lasagna, veal Parmesan, and linguine with clam sauce. “They have the most friendly staff,” panelist Larry Merrill agrees, calling the garlic knots “wonderful.”

For some locals, revisiting tourist spots is a great way to shake up their usual routine.

Even before the president and First Lady Michelle Obama dined at the Corner Kitchen, the Biltmore Village restaurant has attracted tourists with impeccably prepared Southern dishes, great presentation and a menu that changes often. Larry Merrill, co-owner of Applewood Manor Inn, says, “Everything I’ve eaten there was good. When we send people there, they always comment on the presentation.”There are plenty of romantic nooks in the remodeled century-old house, too, and there’s a sunny side porch perfect for locals to relax while sipping a ginger bourbon cocktail.

Tupleo Honey Café is a favorite and popular tourist destination down-town, but panelist Tamiko Ambrose Murray says she can’t stay away for long. “I love the shrimp and grits, and sitting outside is nice.” She adds, “It’s usually crowded, so you have to wait, but it’s worth it.” Tupelo Hon-ey’s creative take on Southern fare is a consistent and dependable choice.

For other locals, exploring an out-of-the-way spot — and off their well-beaten path — is the key to renewal.

There are few places that fall into the same category as Ben’s Tune Up. This American sake brewery and restaurant offers Asian/Polynesian in-fluenced eclectic fare — the perfect rut readjustment. The atmosphere is casual, there’s a lush beer garden, and dinner is served until 2 a.m. What’s more, they now offer a weekday lunch buffet.

In West Asheville, Bandidos Latin Kitchen offers contemporary Latin fusion with South American and Cuban influences. Although the at-mosphere is super casual, the exquisitely prepared and reasonably priced dishes, such as Sunburst Farms trout tacos and Apple Brandy Farms chi-potle steak, are the real attraction here — along with the $5 margaritas and mojitos.

Another West Asheville find is the Tiger Bay Café. Almost hidden behind BattleCat Coffee Shop, this intimate, friendly and reasonably priced restaurant serves breakfast and lunch. There’s a small dining room and a counter with stools near the kitchen. A fusion of Southeast-style barbeque, West Indian and Latin foods, Tiger Bay’s menu items include breakfast sandwiches and curry.

South: FairviewThe Local Joint, in the Fairview area, is not your typical, old-fashioned diner. It’s a cross between a classic American diner and a cool, funky, downtown café. It has the counter, the bar stools and the booths — all the stuff that roadside diners have. But it also has funky decorations, chalk-boards with specials, beer taps from local breweries, plants and flowers, and wine bottles in crates. Stop by for seared salmon eggs Benedict with spinach and goat cheese or a grilled avocado tempeh sandwich. Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and some incredibly delicious, local, organic food. And don’t ever judge a book by its cover.

North: Merrimon AvenueGrab a calendar and mark down the open hours for Cecilia’s Kitchen in North Asheville. It may be easy to miss on Merrimon Avenue, but do not miss out. Open for lunch Monday through Friday, dinner Thursday through Saturday, and brunch 9-3 on Saturday, Cecilia’s is a cozy place, boasting big-flavor, authentic Argentinean fare. With its quaint, no-frills atmosphere, the restaurant feels like you’re eating in someone’s eat-in kitchen. The empanadas and crepes are bursting with flavor and not to be missed. Go and sit down at the counter or call in for catering and take-out. Your taste buds will thank you.

East: Haw CreekCreekside Taphouse is a family-friendly, dog-savvy tavern in the Haw Creek neighborhood. Sit in a booth or a table in the front area, at the bar toward the back, or head outside to the large outdoor space where the creek trickles by and twinkling lights make it the place to be on a warm evening. Play corn hoe, beach volleyball or pool while the Deep South aromas of ribs and barbecue and burgers leave your mouth watering. Best shared with family and friends.

West: Haywood RoadSet your alarm so you won’t miss Mama’s Fast Food biscuits! Nestled among the hip, popular cafés and restaurants on Haywood Road in West Asheville, Mama’s is a tiny, white-brick box that doesn’t look like much on the outside. But, inside, amid the smells of bacon sizzling, biscuits baking, burgers frying and the eclectic, vintage decor, it’s evident that this place serves up some delicious home-cooking. Mama’s is a diner that at-tracts all kinds of folk — but only those who know about it. So, the secret is out of the bag. For a juicy burger or a filling breakfast at a good price, go see Mama. But get there before 2 p.m., when Mama’s shuts down for the day.

Central: River Arts DistrictLove authentic, Neapolitan pizza? Then Pizza Pura in the River Arts District should be on your list. This is the place for serious pizza lovers. Wood-fired artisan pizza takes a little time to prepare, using the original methods from the 1800s in Naples, Italy. But it’s worth the wait. Come relax in the indoor or outdoor seating, soak up the artsy ambiance and enjoy a pie for dinner Mondays through Saturdays. The perfect ending to a day of beauty and inspiration.

If you’re in town for a few days, an easy way to sample a few breweries in one go is to take a brewery tour from Asheville Brewery Tours, Brews Crews or BREW-ed. However, the South Slope area south of downtown is now the perfect place for a self-guided walking tour. If you park near Hilliard and Coxe avenues, you can start hoppy at Asheville Brewing and Hi-Wire, then move over to Wicked Weed for even more hops or a world-class sour. Then wind down through Green Man, Burial and Twin Leaf. (And if you’re reading this in late summer, an additional bar or two and a new Sour Tasting Room from Wicked Weed will also be open in the same area.) Downtown more your thing? Start at Barley’s Taproom & Pizzeria or Thirsty Monk for some of the most compre-hensive draft selections in town, then hit up Lexington Avenue Brewery for a pint or flight.

If you’d rather enjoy a beer in the great outdoors, Catawba Valley, Pis-gah, Asheville Brewing and French Broad all now have their beer in outdoor-friendly cans. Hit up one of the stellar local bottle shops like Bruisin’ Ales (downtown), Appalachian Vintner (Biltmore) or Hops &

Vines (West Asheville) for some fresh ones. If you’re here on vacation, it’s a great chance to do some “souvenir” shopping at the same time. Pair your shiny new cans with a picnic and you’re ready to hit the trail. Or try the reverse and end your hike or mountain biking with a stop at Oskar Blues and Brevard Brewing — they’re a stone’s throw from the entrance to Pisgah National Forest.

If you think you’ve seen all there is to see when it comes to beer, try tak-ing a step back and exploring some of the area’s best producers of beer ingredients. Riverbend Malt House is the first and largest malt house in the Southeast. They focus on connecting brewers with regional farmers, and if you stop by you can talk with maltsters and see the traditional floor malting in action. Check their website and call or email to set up a tour. If you’re more of a hophead, Echoview Farm, OB Joyful, and Hop ‘n Blueberry Farm all offer seasonal tours. If you time it right, you can see and smell those beautiful hops right on the bine.

If you think you can’t hit a local brewery because you have a kid or pup in tow, think again. Quite a few Asheville breweries are kid- and dog-friendly. Highland has made a name for itself with a meadow replete with hammocks that’s fun for the whole family. They also have family-friendly live music many nights. Oyster House is another great choice. With a pint of cask stout for you and some hot fries for the kids, it’s as close as you can get to a British-style neighborhood pub. Or if the whole family wants a movie as well, Asheville Brewing’s Merrimon Avneue location has it seven days a week.

In this small, bustling city with its thriving restaurant scene, many estab-lishments may go unnoticed. But do a double take; our panelists proclaim that these hidden places are worth checking out.

Blue Kudzu Sake is new to the River Arts District, and it is unlike other Asheville eateries in more ways than one. With a full dinner menu and unique items such as the kimchi Reuben, Blue Kudzu Sake also features more than 60 selections of sake, a traditional Japanese alcoholic drink. Earlier this year, Blue Kudzu Sake became licensed to brew its own sake, and even has three certified sake professionals on staff to teach classes on brewing sake, its history and traditions.

Although The Prospect is a memorable bar, its location is quite forget-table. Nestled on Buxton Avenue south of downtown in the South Slope area, it may take you a few trips to remember where it is, but it’s well worth it. This friendly bar is dimly lit, featuring a jukebox, games and a large outdoor area for the warmer months. Late-night Asheville can sometimes be trouble, but not at The Prospect, where the people and the atmosphere are relaxed and genuine.

When the bustling Sunny Point Café in West Asheville is too crowd-ed with morning brunchers, hop down the street to Tastee Diner, an old-school country diner with a grungy, but friendly vibe. With its greasy breakfasts, and NASCAR Hall-of-Famers decorating the walls, it is a true find.

As much as Asheville loves its beer, some breweries and bars have a lower profile than others. Burial Beer Co., which launched earlier this year in the South Slope area, is a small taproom open three days a week (Thurs-day-Saturday) on Collier Avenue. Burial Beer works with other breweries in town to make brews like Firebreather, a Belgian strong ale, a collabora-tion with Hi-Wire Brewing. The space is industrial, but homey and, as such, very Asheville.

Asheville may not be not known for its pizza, but it does offer at least one promising, hidden spot: Del Vecchios, a small Italian eatery located in Bar of Soap on Merrimon Avenue. As you do your laundry, you can enjoy unsurprisingly good beer as well as surprisingly good pizza.

Magnolia Ray, on Weaverville Highway just north of Asheville, is one eatery where you’re welcome to bring your kids for a quiet night. Walk in and the servers remember you. The chef comes out during your dinner to make small talk. This restaurant’s New Orleans-style cuisine offers raw dishes like zucchini pasta, gluten-free options and a kids’ menu.

An easy drive from Asheville, Foothills Pasture Raised Meats in Black Mountain bridges the gap between meats and meals. This family-owned butchery and deli sells local, pasture-raised meats that they process and butcher there. Foothills also offers a rotating menu of lunch sandwiches, take-out dinners and more. The shop has a friendly feel, and the employees often recommend recipes for their hormone- and antibiotic-free meats.

Asheville offers an excellent selection of family-friendly dining options. Our panel of local experts (often referred to as “parents”) quickly estab-lished the most important facets of a good family-dining experience: tasty and inexpensive kids’ menus; kid-friendly activities, spaces and staff; and quality food and drinks for the adults.

Sunny Point Café sits at the top. Whether it’s breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, the West Asheville hotspot serves fresh, terrific food for all ages. Kids rave about the corn pancakes and French toast, and some moms em-phasize the “huge amount of fresh fruit” that accompanies kids’ breakfast items. The “Mighty Good” breakfast plates and sandwiches also impress, as does a mimosa — the MEGA-Mosa — served in a pint glass. Plus, Sunny Point’s wait staff is extremely accommodating, supplying Mr. Po-tato Head toys, crayons and coloring sheets. Other bonuses: a nice patio and large garden where kids can see where their food grows.

Montford’s Nine Mile offers Caribbean-inspired pasta and rice dishes that please kids and adults alike: The large portions are affordably priced and taste fantastic. The kids’ menu features a variety of pasta, rice and salad dishes — all remarkably priced at $2.75. For one local mother, Nine Mile is a perfect place to go when she “doesn’t want a place for kids, but a restaurant that accommodates them.” Other pluses: a friendly wait staff and a kitchen that will rush kids’ orders upon request.

Pho ‘R’ Us, on Hendersonville Road in South Asheville, not only offers a wide range of excellent Vietnamese food, it makes culinary exploration fun. One father celebrated the pho as an “epic noodle bowl” that comes with so

many sides and sauces that eating becomes an activity in itself. Kids can experiment with new types of vegetables, spices, textures and tastes as they dress up their pho any way they like. The bowls of pho are so generous that parents can split a bowl and still have a serving for their child. But you’ll also want to try other items, including some of the best spring rolls in town.

Two other restaurants that make new tastes fun for kids are White Duck Taco Shop in the River Arts District and Chai Pani downtown. White Duck fea-tures a wide and rather exotic menu of items that all seem a little less intimi-dating when wrapped up in a taco tortilla. Fillings include jerk chicken, duck served with mole sauce and Thai peanut chicken. Sides can be black beans, fresh watermelon served with mint, and kimchi. White Duck also makes a mean margarita. Chai Pani, the “Indian street food” restaurant, makes a point to expand kids’ palates while pleasing adults with sumptuous finger food. The Uttapam crepes are a sensation, and kids can eat for free on Wednesdays.

Other places that deserve a mention include: Teaufood Culinary Busk-ing at The Bywater on Riverside Drive (where Teau will cook you up a meal for pay-what-you-will tips!), Creekside Taphouse in East Asheville and West Asheville’s Universal Joint.
