STOP WINTER WATER

DAMAGE!

Testimonial:

“It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies

It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.”

Yours truly,Richard ReussIndependent Business ConsultantForest Row

Dear Residents,Welcome to the first issue of the NEW YEAR!

For all garden-lovers out there we have an informative article brought to you by the local RSPB which will hopefully help with your 2013 garden-planning.

We are lucky this month to be able to bring you a ‘Question & Answer’ with local resident and electric motorbike record breaker, Phil Edwards.

The Forest Row RNLI choir has a strong presence here, albeit a non-coastal area; but why is this? Find out their history on page 10.

January Blues? A Burns night might be the answer... see our feature.

We are hoping to be able to help you throughout the this new year by bringing you local businesses and local community news.

Please drop us a line if you need to promote any local charity/community news.

Finally we’d like to wish you all the best for 2013 and all the best for your New Year’s resolutions!

our wildlife is having a tough time in the wider-countryside, and while conservationists are working to address conflicts and issues on a landscape scale, we can all support their work by trying to improve our own green spaces for as many species as possible.

When it comes to gardening, everyone can do a little something for the wildlife that shares our gardens – and if everyone does their own little bit, then it really will make a big difference.

And gardening for wildlife is hugely enjoyable; there is something uplifting about having butterflies in your flowerbeds, frogs in your water feature and birds in your bushes – and knowing that they’re here because of you.

So where to start? Adrian Thomas, author of the RSPB’s ‘gardening for Wildlife’ book, has the following top 3 tips:

Plants, Plants, Plants

grow a wide variety of plants and you’ll offer food and shelter for all sorts of wildlife. The size of your garden will limit what you can plant, but it’s possible to provide something on even the smallest balcony or terrace.

Include a variety of plants: evergreens, fruit trees, colourful cottage garden plants, annuals and wildflowers to prolong flowering and fruiting times and give a year round food resource.

A well-managed area of trees, shrubs and flowering plants of different structures will support many kinds of wildlife. A range of different structures and ages have many benefits, such as somewhere for birds and insects to breed, feed and shelter.

Water

Almost any water body, whatever its size, will have some wildlife value, even if only as a drinking place for birds. however, this value – and the variety of creatures supported – can be greatly increased the bigger the water source.

Making a wildlife pond of some sort is probably the single most effective thing you can do to boost the biodiversity in your wildlife garden, and everyone’s got room to do something.

The larger you can make your mini-wetland home, the more life it is likely to host. But even if all you have room for is a pond in a pot, life will still find it, and there are workable options, too, for families with small children who need to think safety-first

Chemical-free pest control

Chemical control can often be harmful to the environment and other wildlife that may not be the problem species the chemicals are aimed at.

The key point to remember with pest control in gardens is that you are not trying to remove the pest completely but to protect your plants and crops from serious damage. Most creatures that we see as pests are seen by our garden favourites as food, so encouraging more diversity within the garden will prove beneficial.

Natural predation – By encouraging natural predators of any specific pest into the area, the pest in question will be controlled. Ladybirds, lacewings, frogs, hedgehogs and birds are all great at limiting numbers of garden pests such as aphids and SLugS...

here’s to a Wildlife-friendly-filled gardening season in 2013!

Can’t find the time or bear the thought of battling the cold to get to the gym? Thankfully there is an alternative.

hire Fitness is run by Michael Wall and as part of Europe’s largest equipment hire provider the company hires and sells the very latest and most popular treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, rowers, vibration plates and cavitation machines. Equipment is delivered at a time to suit you and set up in your home. Minimum rental starts at just 4 weeks and you also have an option to swap or buy the equipment with the hire to buy scheme.

In addition to the home, hire Fitness also specialises in providing commercial fitness equipment to gyms in offices, Schools, hospitals, hotels and Personal Training Studios.

one of their most popular models, the ultim8 Vibration plate, is great for toning as well as burning up calories. Most of the exercises involve simply holding a pose on the machine for 30 to 60 seconds and 20 minutes on the machine can be equivalent to a full work out as with conventional training only 40-60% of the muscle fibres are used and with vibration training nearly 100% are used. This significantly strengthens muscle mass and means a leaner, lighter body that burns fat quicker. Studies have shown that vibration training stimulates the muscular blood flow and has positive effects on tendon tissue, bone density and the nervous system. Madonna is one of many celebrities, who use the vibration plates to look and feel young and remain agile.

There is also an acceptance within the medical world that using vibration machines can help with the treatment of cerebral palsy, osteoporosis, chronic pain and back injuries.

The vibration plate can be used alongside a piece cardio-vascular equipment (like a treadmill or cross-trainer) which gives you the best of both worlds, for this reason Michael at Hire Fitness is giving our readers a January Special Offer :-

Hire out 2 pieces of fitness equipment & the second is half-price!* * (minimum 8 weeks)

To take advantage of this offer and for more information call Michael Wall on:

“Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the

rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex

Michael Wall, established his Hire Fitness business 3 years ago & has built up a large portfolio of clients hiring & selling fitness equipment for use in the home He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and studios.

People are increasingly choosing to hire in their homes for many reasons, most often for convenience & lack of time or inclination to go the gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.

Forest Row is a long way from the sea and yet unusually for an inland village, for nearly 70 years its residents have been supporting the RNLI, raising over £100,000 during that time.

A fund- raising committee was first formed in 1939 chaired by the village postman, Billy Mills: not an easy task in the war years. But in response to one of the worst disasters in the history of the RNLI, Billy hit on the idea of forming a choir to sing Christmas carols at house parties in the area.

A fundraising committee was first formed in 1936 by the village postman, Billy Mills. This was in response to one of the worst disasters in the history of the RNLI.

In 1928 the Rye Bay lifeboat was called out to rescue the crew of a Latvian ship. The weather was appalling. Seventeen crewmen heard the call above the wind and rain and ran the mile from the town to the harbour to launch the rowing boat. Five minutes later the recall signal was fired as the crew of the stricken ship had been rescued by another ship. however the crew could not hear the recall above the storm and spent several hours searching for the ship. on their return, as they reached the harbour entrance, a huge wave capsized the boat and all 17 crew drowned.

Some years later, Billy Mills became a good friend of William Pope who had moved to Ashurst Wood from Rye. William was 3 at the time of the disaster and had lost 3 of his brothers. his mother never got over this and died a few years later. The tragedy tore his family apart.

In 1946 twenty singers, conducted by hugh Davies, went out for the first time. And the Forest Row Lifeboat choir was born! Since then the choir has gone from strength to strength and become a Forest Row institution. There are now over 30 members and the musical director is Simon Morris. The choir sings at a variety of venues in the weeks before Christmas and there is always a concert in Forest Row.

The Branch committee, now chaired by Thelma Manning, is also still busy organising a variety of other events during the year. Summer fetes, fashion shows and quizzes, balls and concerts have all helped to swell the funds - over £9,000 in 2012. In recent years much of the money raised went towards the new lifeboat station at Shoreham.

The East Sussex Youth orchestra has helped with concerts in the past and this July will be performing in Arundel Cathedral, with Laura van der heijden the 2012 Young Musician of the Year, sharing the proceeds with the RNLI.

on February 23rd in Forest Row the soprano Rebecca Newman will be performing as part of her coast to coast tour supporting the RNLI, and promises to be a wonderful evening. For more information go to www.rebeccanewman.net.

So, if you like singing and would like to keep alive the spirit of Forest Row RNLI Choir’s humble beginnings then contact Thelma Manning at [email protected] or 01342 327587.

“I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ when I heard about it. The fact that it is delivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ashdown Forest area that are hard to reach. This was proved to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km driveway! A teenager in Nepal has invented a solar panel from human hair to solve the energy problems of his village, which does not have access to electricity.

Inspired by a Stephen hawking book—which states that human hair could generate static electricity—he “realized that Melanin was one of the factors in conversion of energy”.

Based on this idea, he—with the help of his classmates—developed a human-hair solar panel that is able to generate 18 watts of energy, which is approximately the amount of energy required to charge a phone.

By replacing the silicon used in solar panels with human hair, he was able to bring down the price of the panel to just uS$38—which is a quarter of the price of a conventional solar panel.

If mass-produced, this could be the solution to the energy needs of the developing world...

An early Christmas present came to St Michael and All Angels’, Withyham, when a set of four 14th century Italian paintings belonging to the Church was sold by auction at Sotheby’s, London, on 5th December for the staggering sum of £950,000. This secures the longterm future of the Church for progeny as the proceeds of the sale will be invested to produce a source of income to be used solely for the repair and maintenance of St Michael’s and it’s churchyard, thereby freeing up funds for the mission of the church and the pastoral needs of the parish.

The story of the paintings go back to 1849 when Edward John ottley presented the set of four 14th century Italian paintings depicting the Passion of Christ to St Michael and All Angels’ Church. They had been part of the collection of William Young ottley, R.A, (1771-1836), collector, artist and art scholar. Yet their importance and value were not recognised until over 100 years later when cleaning of the paintings was carried out at the Courtauld Institute 1990-1995. Their true value was uncovered and it was decided that returning them to the church would be unsuitable and risky with inadequate security and inconducive environmental conditions that would threaten

their conservation. Thus they were transferred on loan to Leeds Castle (Maidstone) in 1997. And in lieu, excellent full-size copies made at that time, were hung in the church - and will continue to do so.

Research on their nature and provenance was undertaken in London, New York and Florence before the paintings were offered for sale. Experts agreed that the paintings could be attributed to Niccolo di Pietro gerini and date from about 1390.

Chancellor of Chichester Diocese Mark hill granted permission for the paintings to be sold on the basis that they a) have no integral part in the history of Withyham Church or its devotional life; b) that they had been absent from the church for over 20 years and were unlikely ever to return; and c) that their potential value of about £1 million (if realised by sale and invested) could yield much needed income for the church which the donor, Edward John ottley, evidently intended to benefit by his gift.

And with that fabulous ending Chancellor hill said: ‘The nest egg must be allowed to hatch’.

With Adrian Leak, Priest in Charge, adding: ‘The Donor, Edward John ottley, will rejoice that once again Withyham Church will benefit from his gift.’

Phil Edwards lives in Uckfield and is the owner of Weald EVT (Electric Vehicle Technology) and the man behind the electric motorbike that set a new speed record in this country. Here we ask him all about it:

Is this what you wanted to do growing up? Where did your aspirations to be involved in cutting-edge engineering come from?

I’ve always liked engineering and designing. I enjoyed making models when I was younger and knew from an early age that I wanted to be a draughtsman. I did an apprenticeship at The APV Company in Crawley (long-since closed) and have spent all of my working life involved in engineering and manufacturing companies.

How did you phase out of your day-job and into developing Electric-motorbikes with Weald EVT?

In 2005 I became a self-employed manufacturing consultant, helping small manufacturers to improve their quality and processes. Alongside that I enjoyed restoring motorbikes as a hobby, and I had a project waiting in the garage late in 2009. Whilst browsing the internet I found out about electric motorcycles and, because I’m interested in new technology, wondered if I could convert this motorbike to electric-power. So I read up on how they work and decided to have a go!

I was fortunate that there’s a chap in Peacehaven who

is something of an expert so I visited him a few times for advice. Being an engineer I like to have a target to aim for and to know how well the project turns out. After a bit more trawling the internet I discovered that an “Alternative Energy Racing” event took place every summer at Santa Pod, the home of uk drag racing. There was my target – I would challenge the best time that had been recorded up to that point (2010).

Tell us about the record-breaking goal?

having set the challenge I dug out my old books and started calculating what it would take to build a bike that was going to be faster than the current record-holder. This was a bike that had been built by kingston university, and it had set a time of 14.99 seconds for the ¼ mile run.

It took almost a year to get the bike finished and running, and then we spent spring of 2011 testing it on a track in Sussex. unfortunately our track was not long enough to try a full ¼ mile run, which is what the record attempt would be on, so we had to do the best we could and hope that it would be quick enough on the day!

As it turned out it was good enough as we smashed the record on our first run, and during the day got even better, finally setting a new time of 14.12 seconds.

In terms of being a ‘green’ machine, is helping the environment a big factor for the business?

I’m mostly excited by the clever technology. Being green is an issue, but it’s not the primary one. We certainly do need to be careful with how much fossil fuel is available and consider alternate methods. It’s early days for electric vehicles so, no, they don’t necessarily match up to the performance or practicality for everyone, but they are perfectly useable for the majority of trips. The technology is expensive at the moment too, so I can understand people thinking “why should I pay a lot more for something that doesn’t do quite as much” but I’m sure the early pioneers of motoring faced the same issues.

I’ve developed a few more electric motorcycles and am now working on an electric vehicle community car club which is very exciting and has huge potential for future cities. I’ll tell you more about that another time…

What awards have you received so far?

We were delighted to receive an Innovation Voucher from the SEEDA (the previous South East England Development Agency) which allowed us to have some development work done by Brighton university. Even more exciting was winning the gold Award for Engineering at the green Apple Environmental Awards. We were presented with this at a reception at The house of Commons in November 2011.

What local support have you had?

We have enjoyed a lot of support from our Wealden MP, Charles hendry, and one of our earliest supporters was uckfield-based TR Fastenings who have been very good to us. uckfield FM have kindly featured the bike a few times too.

Caribbean chicken salad

What to do:1. Cook the rice in a saucepan of gently boiling water for

about 30 minutes, until tender. Drain and rinse under cold

water to cool it quickly, then drain again.

2. Mix together the rice, pineapple, bananas, grapes,

sultanas or raisins and lemon juice.

3. In a large bowl, mix together the yoghurt and

mayonnaise. Add the rice mixture and chicken. Season

with pepper and mix well.

4. Arrange the lettuce on 4 serving plates and share the

chicken mixture between them. Serve at once.

Tip 1: Try to eat more brown rice! The outer part (the

bran) is a good source of fibre, the part of plant-based-

foods that your body doesn’t digest. A diet that’s high in

fibre may help to reduce cholesterol in the blood. It may

also lower your risk of stomach disorders. higher fibre

foods are a good source of calcium, iron and B vitamins.

Mothers from Bells Yew green (south of Tunbridge Wells) have started their village playground funding project. one mother Rachel graville tells us more:

‘The aim of the project is to raise sufficient funds to install a play area within the grounds of the village hall. The play area will predominantly benefit children aged up to 8 years but it is envisaged the facilities would benefit the whole community by providing a meeting place with seating.

‘There has been consultation within the village to ensure all interested groups have input and a planning application has recently been granted. So we are now heavily involved in the fundraising needed to bring it to fruition.

‘The project is part of an ongoing campaign to raise community spirit and to provide a play area for the many children in Bells Yew green. Currently their nearest area to play is in Frant which is only accessible by car due to the very fast road linking the two villages. The children of the village and the surrounding areas need to be free to play, climb and exercise imaginative play in a safe environment; the play area will solve this.

‘The project requires funding of £25,000. It is hoped this will be achieved via a combination of applications for funding and various community events. Wealden DC has been extremely helpful in this respect and the project has also recently benefited from a contribution by East Sussex Police.’

Anyone wishing to assist in anyway is asked to contact the secretary to the committee Rachel graville at [email protected].

Update on Chelwood Vachery – Ranger Mike Payne

Spraying took place during the summer with a further contract put in place for Shalom and rhododendron.

At the end of october silt was cleared from the upper four ponds of the gorge which resulted in some interesting finds including footings to an old building!

During Autumn our Conservation Volunteers worked on the gorge completing several tasks around the ponds. on the top bank of the 1st pond a small area of oak scrub was cleared to open up visibility and to reduce the amount of leaf litter silting up the pond. Further down, volunteers cleared the footings, and others cleared brambles and scrub to reveal a retaining rockery wall, a second ram pump house and a blocked pipe.

In the future we are planning to revisit regularly to keep the ponds and cascades free from overgrowth, to remove tree growth and control the growth of any scrubby plants to keep a tidy line of sight up the gorge. There are a few ditches around the Vachery that will require attention, all the paths will need continued management, as will the brickwork along the lakes.

The installation of an interpretation board near the folly bridge will be rebuilt and we are certain it will be a valuable addition to the Vachery.

A lovely walk really worth a visit!Ashdown Forest Ranger

1.75 miles/3km

From Linton’s car park cross the road (with care) into Ridgecar park (summer only). Walk out of the rear past a seat ontoa grass path and in about 50m turn left onto a ride. Remain onthis gently descending ride, ignoring another that bears offright, for about 400m.

On both left and right are linear quarries, now filled with scrub and trees. Suchquarries dot the Forest landscape andprovided stone for roads. Typical heathlandbirds such as nightjar, stonechat, tree pipitand woodlark usually breed in this area andthe ride edges in particular are one of thebest places on the Forest (indeed in Sussex)to see, in May, the yellow flowers of thesmall spiny shrub, petty whin.

The ride bears left, then right through a break in the quarriesand continues descending for 400m to a metalled drive (SandyLane) . On the left is a bowling green and ahead are thecricket pitch and pavilion of Coleman’s Hatch Cricket Club.

On the hill-top in the distance is Gills Lap Clump, the Galleons Lapof the Winnie-the-Pooh books. One old name for the Clump was TheCamel’s Hump, from the shape formed by the silhouettes of its pinetrees. In the 1920s, when the picture (left) was taken, there werevery few trees on the surrounding slopes, just open heathland.

Cross the drive and walk to the right of the cricket pitch. Wherethe ride divides, bear right, leaving the pitch, and bear rightat the next divide after 300m . The ride descends more steeplyand swings right and downhill into woodland and to a bridgeover a stream .

This area is known as Tabell Ghyll. Itswoodland is most unusual for the publicpart of the Forest with its many largetrees, especially beech, and severalhectares of planted sweet chestnutcoppice. The area was sold off from thecommon land of the Forest in 1693 andonly ‘returned’ during World War Two inexchange for the compulsory purchaseof land elsewhere for military reasons. In the map of 1931 (below) the heavilywooded Ghyll is in marked contrast to the heath to the north of thestream – a reflection of different land use over 250 years.

Ashdown Forest Ranger’s Report

hAVINg A BuRNS NIghT?

Who Said there was nothing to do in January!

Rabbie Burns, the bard of Scotland, is celebrated worldwide each January 25th on Burns Night. he wrote in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, making his works accessible to an audience beyond Scotland.

Among many traditional customs is the ‘Entrance of the haggis’. Everyone stands as the main course is brought in. This is always a haggis on a large dish while a piper plays bagpipes and leads the way

to the host’s table, where the haggis is laid down. There, the address to a haggis begins:

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face, (sonsie = jolly/cheerful) great chieftain o’ the puddin-race! Aboon them a’ ye tak your place, (aboon = above) Painch, tripe, or thairm: (painch = paunch/stomach, thairm = intestine) Weel are ye wordy o’ a grace As lang’s my arm.

Another custom is a ‘Toast to the Lassies’.This covers the male speaker’s view on women and is normally amusing - but not offensive! The men drink a toast to women’s health.

The final custom is that the host will call on one of the guests to give the vote of thanks, after which everyone is asked to stand, join hands, and sing Auld Lang Syne bringing the evening to an end.

So why not consider finding your nearest Burns Night and add another occasion to your yearly calendar to brighten the January blues…

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead is the brain child of Rachael Workman, A kitchen designer with 19 years of experience behind her. Four years ago, she decided to set up a complete service to help clients create their perfect kitchen with all the hassle taken out.

The Kitchens Bespoke showroom gives the idea of different kitchen styles, materials and colour schemes available.

Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an advantage. ‘I design from a practical viewpoint. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function.’

Rachael always keeps her finger on the pulse of new developments that can bring a kitchen to life and save time and money for her customers. For instance, back-lit glass can give a striking look and there are 50 colours to choose from.

Rachael has links to products and materials that may provide the solution to a worn-out or out-dated kitchen. She will then select what works for each individual household from simple door replacement to a complete kitchen refit; the Kitchen Bespoke service is all-inclusive.

The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself, meaning it’s designed with you, the customer, in mind. Rachael says her kitchens are ‘more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune’.

While much of Rachael’s work is local to this area, with her years of experience her client base extends from London to Hampshire.

It is no wonder then that Kitchens Bespoke was a finalist in market leading magazine KBB Review’s ‘customer service’ award in the East Grinstead/Crowborough area category.

This last year, due to expansion within the business, Rachael has been joined by her husband Guy who says:

“Seeing the business grow over the past 4 years, under this economic climate, is fantastic and I couldn’t wait to be a part of its expansion. We both share a vision of creating a family business which gives attention to detail & customer service”.

Kitchens Bespoke can design a kitchen that fits you: practically, budget-wise & aesthetically. The kitchen you imagined can become a reality.
