Learn to play Mahjong

New Residents at The Ashbrook

Mahjong is a tile based game originally developed in China in the Qing Dynasty in the early 20th Century, and has now spread throughout the world. It is most commonly played by four players.

It is an enjoyable game that relies on tactics, observation, memory and adaptive strategies. If we can get enough residents interested, we will be keen to arrange Mahjong lessons so more can learn the game and play.

We already have 3 - 4 residents who regularly play and more players would be of benefit. A notice will be placed by the letterboxes, so please leave your name on the list and we will arrange a time to play.

Join in and learn to play!

Welcome our new residents!

Jennifer Stehn and Susan Monks.

When meeting them in the corridors or the lift, please introduce yourself and make them feel welcome.

Let the ‘War on Waste’ at The Ashbrook begin!

Following on from a West Torrens Council information session on recycling of plastics, the Social Committee had guest speaker, Liddy Dolman from Ecolateral speak to us on August 7th. Her subject was ‘Sustainable living and what we can do at home’ - ways to manage our lives without plastic.

This was a very informative discussion on the many ways we, as environmentally aware residents could change a lot in our daily lives. We cn start by using specifically natural products (i.e. bamboo) and a lot of other readily available household and personal items that will break down and do not impact on the environment.

Re-usable various size shopping bags for fruit and vegetables, bamboo socks, clothing and even cutlery to eliminate plastic we get each time we have a take away meal. The list was long and very usable so it’s time that we, as citizens of

this planet, say NO to plastic. Saying no, especially in retail areas can help get the message across to retailers and hopefully stop the oversupply of plastic worldwide.

A great evening followed, a cuppa and a biscuit for all who attended.

Our meetings are held on the first Monday of every second month, in the Forth floor Dining Room.

Ashbrook Apartments has 5 residents who live with Parkinson’s Disease, all of which regularly attend our meetings, as well as

another five or more interested residents who also attend.

Alternate meetings have a guest speaker - most guest speakers have been from Parkinson’s SA, and talk about various topics related to PD. Last month we had a very interesting lady from The Ashbrook, she concentrated on our individual PD problems as well as explaining common problems associated with PD.

On Monday 3rd of September, our guest speaker will be Ms. Olivia Nassaris, CEO of Parkinson’s SA. Olivia will give an overview of Parkinson’s SA, present plans and their future plans for the association. This will be a very informative morning and all Residents of Ashbrook are invited to come along and hear what Olivia has to say. The Craft Group has kindly offered to provide Morning Tea for this meeting.

As a group we will endeavor to introduce interesting guest speakers as well as having some open discussions amongst ourselves to raise awareness and gain a better understanding of Parkinson’s Disease.

On Tuesday 24th July, forty eight happy residents gathered together in the Dining Room to enjoy a delightful afternoon tea. The Ashbrook Social Committee worked hard to organise a splendid Afternoon Tea as well as six home deliveries to those who couldn’t make it.

The event was highlighted by ample serves of delicious scones, accompanied by plentiful amounts of jam and cream. A feast indeed!

The needs of the guests were attended to by the ladies of the Social Committee who once again, excelled themselves in the service of their fellow residents. It was an excellent occasion!

Monday 13th August was a lucky day for seventeen hungry residents who ventured to the Highway Inn for lunch. It happened to be a special schnitzel day with part profits to the ‘buy a bale’ project for the farming community and the walls were bursting.

The food was excellent – special mention of the Oysters. The service was prompt and plenty of conversation flowed. Shared transport and the close proximity to Ashbrook Apartments made this a popular choice which residents will most likely revisit soon.

Happy Hour Ukulele Group

On Friday 24th, from 5pm onward (you had to get in early to get a seat) approximately 50 enthusiastic residents gathered in the Sports Bar, eager to be entertained by the Ashbrook Ukulele Strummers and Singers.

A large TV screen had been set up by Boris to display words so that all present could sing along to the tunes being played.

Considering the short period of time since this group was organised and began regular

practice meetings, they now perform as a well-co-ordinated “professional” group. As an aside to playing and singing, they all enjoy themselves and this then transfers to the audience. It was amazing, a tune started and every mouth in the room moved, singing. This is the type of music we all grew up with and remember.

A great performance by all and a wonderful evening of entertainment. Thank you: can’t wait for the next performance!

Work to Ashbrook’s Sky Garden are close to completion. Like all construction jobs, we have had to jump a few hurdles along the way, which has delayed completion until late September. However, as you can see from the photos, the end result will be a magnificent facility for residents to enjoy. Once completed, residents will be able to enjoy a year-round facility with state-of-the-art appliances and amenities, giving residents of The Ashbrook a wider range of activities and functions, enhancing the community lifestyle offered at Ashbrook Apartments.

Tiling, painting, rendering, new water feature, and final fit off of amenities will take place over the next three weeks. A revised Construction program has been made available in the ground floor meeting room.

Looking forward to enjoying your company at the Grand Opening. Additional information will be supplied over the coming weeks.
