  • His brothers deserted him but he did notgive up worship of God

    – Pujya Bapuji

(In the previous issue, we read that inspite of the strong insistence of the youngerbrothers, the elder brother did not sacrificedevotion to God to earn his livelihood.According to the wishes of his youngerbrothers, he agreed to get separated andhappily accepted a cottage, some clothesand few silver coins as his share. His wisewife, devoted to herhusband, activelymanaged her householdduties… Continued…)

Describing thefinancial situation oftheir house, his wifesaid, “Just a few coinsare now left.”

He replied, “Why doyou worry when wehave so much wealth, jewellery and clothes.”

She understood thathe was hinting – ‘Live on what you have.’

As the days passed, all the wealth wasdepleted and jewellery was sold forsustenance. She informed him, “All thejewellery and clothes have been sold tosustain our daily living requirements.”

He enquired, “Dear! Do we haveanything left?”

She replied, “We are left with only theutensils.”

“Why do you worry when there’s stillsomething left to sustain us?” Saying thishe went to the lake.

Every morning he would get up, goto the lake, bathe, meditate and returnhome around 11 am. In the meantime his

wife would prepare meals and serve him.He would not eat the food, but feed theLord abiding in his body after recitingthe shlokas.

  • Awaken your Àtma-Shiva

    – Pujya Bapuji

    (MahÍ-ShivarÍtri – 11th March)The festival of MahÍ-ShivarÍtri holds

great significance from Puranic andscientific perspectives and is highly usefulto worshippers. Now the question is withwhich mental attitude we observe it. If youobserve it to attain God, then the spiritualsecrets will be revealed to you and if youobserve it just by imitation, then you willfeel, ‘Let us observe it as others are doing.’Three Important facts

The worship of MahÍ-ShivarÍtri is performed toattain our welfare-natureSelf. It includes threeimportant things: (1) Vrata(strict fast) (2) Poojan(worship) and (3) JÍgaraÔa(night vigil).

    ^OÝVo _m§ ÑT>d«Vm… &“Virtuous men steadfast

in vows, worship Me.” (The GitÍ: 7.28)Let us take a firm vow to get liberated

in this life. Let every daily activity becomean act of divine worship. Be vigilant doingdaily activities; get awakened in practicewhile witnessing the events of pleasure andpain. This is spiritual ShivarÍtri. These literary compositions are

to awaken you:When Vasishthaji, the Guru of Lord

Rama practiced penance in a Himalayancave, Lord SÍmba SadÍshiva and PÍrvatijiappeared before him from a vast beamof light and a conversation on knowledgeensued. Lord Shiva spoke about aceremonial worship which commonpeople can take benefit from and anotherfor highly evolved sÍdhakas by whichthey can establish themselves in thesupreme state of equanimity. Just as small

children go to kindergarten for study andelder ones go to secondary school andthen there are universities; the basic aimis to educate them to make them scholars. They should not remain illiterate.Similarly every festival and MahÍ-ShivarÍtri has a hidden motive to advancethe jiva to awaken into its own Self.

So a festival like MahÍ-ShivarÍtri,JanmÍshtami, other festivals and

meditation, DhÍraÔÍ(concentration), DhyÍna(meditation) and SamÍdhiall are to awaken the Jiva.May the Jiva speak out:‘Aham BrahmÍsmi (Iam Brahman).’

    The

PurÍÔas and shÍstras arecomposed to awaken you.You may get awakened byobserving MahÍ-ShivarÍtri,

JanmÍshtami, by the grace of SatGuru, orby doing Japa… but God and authors ofthe shÍstras have made efforts to awakenyou in your essential nature.

“A soul should be deemed as havingawoken from the night of the world onlywhen he gets absorbed in contemplationof the Supreme and develops an aversionfor the enjoyments of the world of sense.”(Shri RÍma Charita MÍnasa, AyodhyÍ KÍnda: 92.2)

Your MahÍ-ShivarÍtri will bringsupreme welfare to you if you developlove for your Atman. ‘Shiva’ meansKalyÍÔa swaroopa (welfare-nature),Ànanda Swarupa (Bliss-nature). The effectof this night is such that if a person keepsvigil the whole night, he will get peaceof mind and make progress.

  • Once, when Pujya Bapuji was inRajokari ashram, and there were 2-3 of ussÍdhaka-brothers together , I askedGurudev – “Bapuji, we have been blessedwith a chance to live in the ashram, we getenough time too, and do sevÍ & sÍdhanÍas well; yet, we haven’t been able to moveas diligently towards the ultimate goal ofSelf-realization, as we should have.”

Gurudev became serious for some timeand then said, “Yes, everyone will getspiritual benefit in proportion to hisspiritual journey; and the firmer the resolve(of God-realization) one makes beforeundertaking the spiritual journey , thesooner he will attain it. You have such agreat opportunity to attain God; those whodon’t value it now, will end up regretting it

in the future. How much I have bestowedso far (in terms of spirituality), and amgiving even now, is not something thatanyone has ever done until now.”

Imagine, how concerned Gurudev isabout us sÍdhakas! Just to elevate our lives,He gives away His precious time to explaineven the minutest of things so that wedon’t become entangled anywhere, evenour sevÍ and sÍdhanÍ shouldn’t go in vain, and we should attain the supreme, ultimategoal of our life at the earliest. Hownaturally Gurudev has been imparting suchsublime, abstruse (Vedantic) knowledgeto us! Now it’s for all of us to ponder howmuch regard we are having for thatsupreme prasÍda, and how much we havebeen assimilating it in our lives. m
