Essential Questions:

• What are the reasons for propagating plants asexually?

• What are leaf and leaf-bud cuttings and how are they used to produce a new plant?

• What are the types of stem cuttings and how do they differ?

• How are roots used to propagate plants?• What environmental factors affect the

rooting of cuttings?

What are the reasons for propagating plants asexually?

• Asexual reproduction in plants involves the reproduction of new plants using only the vegetative parts (stem, leaf, and root) of the parent plant.

What are the reasons for propagating plants asexually?

• Asexual reproduction:– enables the production of plants that would be difficult

or impossible to reproduce if the plant does not produce viable seed or the seed is difficult to germinate.

– used when it is necessary to maintain certain genetic forms of the plant (the plants will be identical to the parent plant) = CLONES

– may be faster than propagation by seed– is easier in many cases and more economical (cheaper)

ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION: cloning, faster, easier, cheaper

What are leaf and leaf-bud cuttings and how are they

used to produce a new plant?

• Entire leaves or portions of a leaf can be removed from the parent plant for use as a leaf cutting.

Leaf cutting - a piece of a leaf blade, or a leaf blade with the petiole attached.- leaf cuttings can produce new stems and roots from the edge of the leaf

What are leaf and leaf-bud cuttings and how are they

used to produce a new plant?

Leaf-bud cutting - consists of a leaf blade, the petiole, and a short piece of stem with an attached bud.- the small bud will develop into a new plant stem that will eventually produce new plant roots

What are the types of stem cuttings and how do they differ?

• Portions of stems that contain terminal or lateral buds are used for stem cuttings.

What are the types of stem cuttings and how do they differ?

• Herbaceous cuttings - made from plants with stems that do not become woody– Examples:

geraniums, coleus, and carnations

What are the types of stem cuttings and how do they differ?

• Softwood cuttings - taken from the soft, new growth in the spring or early summer

What are the types of stem cuttings and how do they differ?

• Semi-hardwood cutttings - made from woody broadleaf plants in the summer after the plant has finished its rapid summer growth– Examples:

evergreen plants such as yew, juniper and holly

What are the types of stem cuttings and how do they differ?

• Hardwood cuttings - used to propagate evergreens and deciduous plants with woody stems during the winter when the plant is dormant

How are roots used to propagate plants?

Root cuttings are similar to stem cuttings, except that a root cutting uses the root or part of the root to propagate a new plant- most difficult method of

asexual propagation

Page 13: Asexual Propagation Textbook pages 101 - 119 Essential Questions: What are the reasons for propagating plants asexually? What are leaf and leaf-bud cuttings

What environmental factors affect the rooting of cuttings?

• Plants are very individual and each seems to have a preferred method of propagation.– they have a preference for the type of medium,

amount of moisture, and temperature for the rooting of their cuttings
