• Since 2000 the number of people killed or injured onEuropean roads has been reduced by 25% while the
number of km driven by trucks increased by 20%
• The European Directive EC59/2003 on professionaldriver qualification is in place from September 08/09
for respectively Cat. D and C drivers
• Whilst this shall help increase the knowledge andskills of professional drivers and therefore positivelyimpact road safety, its implementation is complex
and there is a lack of harmonisation
Results
Page 27 (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010
• There is a strong need to harmonise, at the EU level, the qualification of road transport professionals
• The road transport industry needs high standardinfrastructure. A focus should be placed on improvedSafe Parking Areas in order to comply with regulation
EC 561/2006 on Drive and Rest Time rules
• There is a need to harmonise enforcement rules &infringements
• The industry doesn’t need more regulations anddirectives but it need the incentives in order that thecurrent legal requirements can be fulfilled efficientlyand quickly
