The 1th AS#AN Summit "as originally set to be hosted on &ebu island in the -hilippines fromecember 1@ to 16. 2o"ever on ecember E, organisers decided to move the summit schedule to1D17 'anuary @@; due to Typhoon Seniang. &ebu 4etropolitan Area composed of &ebu&ity, 4andaue &ity, Talisay &ity, and +apu=+apu &ity/ ointly hosted varied events of the summit. Theactual conference "as held at the &ebu 3nternational &onvention &entre in 4andaue &ity "hilethe Shangri=+a 4actan 3sland *esort G Spa in +apu=+apu &ity provided accommodations fordelegates and venues for smaller meetings.

 AS#AN "as founded is a stated principle of non=interference in the internal affairs of other memberstates. Any tension has been kept from the public vie" and leaders have avoided confrontationalstatements in public.

Win attended the conference and foreign minister  Nyan Win had already made pre=summit pressreleases on 4yanmarCs continuing commitment for the roadmap to democracy.

5et"een the ten member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations AS#AN/ and 3ndia, afree trade agreement has been set. The initial deal "as signed on E >ctober @@% in 3ndonesia andthe final agreement "as on 1% August @@:. it came into effect on 1 'anuary @1@. The latest

 AS#AN=3ndia &ommemorative Summit "as held in Ne" elhi on ecember @D1, @1. As of@11=1, t"o="ay trade bet"een 3ndia G AS#AN stood at SB ;: billion. This is considered on of thelargest FTAs in the "orld. Tariffs on over 6,@@@ product varieties "ill be eliminated by @18.

 At the same time, Australia and Ne" 0ealand started the negotiation for a free trade deal "ith AS#AN. The aim of the negotiation is to significantly reduce trade barriers by @18.[1![!

Treaty of Amity and Cooperation[edit!

 AS#ANCs Treaty of Amity and &ooperation in Southeast Asia is open for non=AS#AN states toaccede. 3t reLuires the contracting parties to forgo any threat or use of force against each other.

The Foreign 4inisters of AS#AN member states determined that invitation to the inaugural #ast Asian Summit, the first of "hich is to be held in late @@7 and hosted by 4alaysia, "as to be

restricted to parties to the treaty. On 8 August 1967, five leaders - the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, ingapore

and !hailand - sat do"n together in the #ain hall of the $epart#ent of Foreign Affairs %uilding in

&ang'o', !hailand and signed a do(u#ent) &y virtue of that do(u#ent, the Asso(iation of outheast

Asian *ations +AA* "as %orn) !he five Foreign Ministers "ho signed it - Ada# Mali' of Indonesia,

*ar(iso .) .a#os of the Philippines, !un A%dul .a/a' of Malaysia, ) .a0aratna# of ingapore, and

!hanat ho#an of !hailand - "ould su%se2uently %e hailed as the Founding Fathers of pro%a%ly the

#ost su((essful inter-govern#ental organi/ation in the developing "orld today) And the do(u#ent that

they signed "ould %e 'no"n as the AA* $e(laration)

And so in early August 1967, the five Foreign Ministers spent four days in the relative isolation of a

%ea(h resort in &ang aen, a (oastal to"n less than a hundred 'ilo#eters southeast of &ang'o') !here
