Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe
Chris Schneider Munich Airport GmbH – Dataset2050 workshop – 12-JUL-2016
• European citizens are able to make informed mobility choices
• 90% of travellers within Europe are able to complete their journey, door-to-door within 4 hours.
• A coherent ground infrastructure is developed
• Flights land within 1 minute of the planned arrival time
• An air traffic management system is capable of handling 25 million flights a year in Europe
• A shift from ‘mode-specific’ to ‘integrated transport solutions’ (door-to-door vs. airport-to-airport)
• Need to harmonize processes and interfaces between travel modes
• Need to enable seamless flows of passengers and freight through the system in order to meet d2d mobility performance targets
• Need for a step-change in predictability and punctuality of transport operations
• Customer-centric system also means liberalised and competitive transport market
• Informed mobility-choices by customers require guidance provided without any bias towards providers or modes
Addressing this mobility challenge means ….

Integration and co-operation is key for customer-centric mobility

Travel improvements: • Travel decisions based on
unbiased information according individual travel preferences (e.g. environmental footprint, cost, reliability, punctuality, health aspects etc.)
• Integrated door-to-door travel planning, booking, ticketing and payment (one contract for whole journey)
• Door-to-door (multimodal) travel monitoring & reconfiguration reduces uncertainty, buffers and stress
• Integrated airport processes provide a hassle-free and predictable walk-through experience
• Sufficient system capacity and integration allows customers freedom of choice and unprecedented reliability, service and punctuality levels.

Air traffic in Europe is forecast to double in the next 20 years ...
Only domestic traffic within China is forecast to outperform intra-European and North American traffic growth until 2034 (absolute growth, RPK):

This cannot be taken for granted. E.g. official planning for a third runway in MUC began in 2005, legal approval was obtained in 2012 and confirmed in 2014... But construction is currently blocked by a public vote
Major airports will be even more congested ....

Average Delay [min]
Airside (Runway) Capacity Curve – Delays increase exponentially with traffic levels ….
Declared capacity
Declared Capacity: The capacity per hour used in specifying the number of slots available for schedule coordination purposes; no standard method for its determination; generally set to about 85-90% of saturation capacity
4
Practical Capacity
Practical Capacity: The average number of operations that can be performed in one hour on a runway with an average delay per operation of 4 minutes.
Saturation Capacity
Saturation Capacity / max. Throughput: The expected (“average”) number of operations
(takeoffs and landings) that can be performed in one hour on a runway without violating ATC rules, assuming continuous aircraft demand.

Disruptive change is in the air …. Will it help to meet the challenge ?

The punctuality & predictability challenge
Punctuality challenge 1: Airport (landside) capacity and operations
• Increasing predictability of operations (e.g. by Total Airport Management)
• Integration with other modes
• Hassle free, non-intrusive security procedures • Risk based approach to security • Use of biometrics • Improved screening technologies
• Time efficiency & process predictability
• Airport / travel experience • Indoor location & route-finding systems • Tailored & integrated services • Innovative passenger information channels

Punctuality challenge 2: Airport (airside) Capacity
• Improved use of runway system
• updated runway operating modes based on new CNS/ATM technology (for new and existing infrastructure)
• reduced separations at increased safety levels • reduced runway occupancy times (e.g. Brake-To-
Vacate) • Increased predictability of runway operations and
performance • improved AWO systems and procedures
• Improved system resilience in adverse weather situations
16
Punctuality challenge 3: ATM & airspace capacity
• Increasing airspace capacity
• Focus on on-time arrivals for flow management (?)
• Optimised terminal flight procedures
• Maintaining capacity levels in various WX conditions
• Integration of new air vehicle concepts (UAVs, RPAS, new configurations)
• Facilitating change and adoption of new technologies (e.g. GBAS)
• Role of automation ?
• ???
17
So we do have a real punctuality & predictability challenge …
18
Chris Schneider Munich Airport GmbH – Dataset2050 workshop – 12-JUL-2016
• How can we meet it ?
• What are the most promising approaches ?
• Do we need disruption ? If so, in which area ?
• ???
Thank you
